Hot take — there was not a point to Annabeth’s blonde hair. If y’all want to find me some evidence, I’ll totally change my mind, but I’ve read The Lightning Thief a thousand times, and she is literally just *blonde*. That’s it. It’s not even mentioned much more than once in that book, and as far as I know it only ever comes up later on when Percy is falling in love with her and starting to pay attention to her appearance. The idea that her being blonde is social commentary on stereotypes is a super sweet thought, but I really don’t think 2005-trying-to-get-out-of-teaching-middle-school Rick Riordan was really thinking about it that hard…

And also, a lot of people act like this is a milestone, because suddenly a blonde girl is seen as smart, as if that stereotype isn’t incredibly outdated. But like, Elle Woods did it first in 2001???

And it’s also not like that stopped after Annabeth. Sophie Foster was a senior in high school at 12 years old, and she’s literally based on Legolas, so of course she’s blonde. Cress Darnel from the Lunar Chronicles is like one of the most intelligent hackers of all time. AND SHE’S BLONDE.

Annabeth’s hair is literally not a big deal. And Leah is amazing.

Sorry but disagree. I like Leah in the show but for the books, I have to agree with the reblogs.

Her being blond is her identity. When you fancast, you look for a blond girl, when you read you imagine a blond girl. Because that character is 20 years old, older than most of us and she is blond. She helped me, I had the same struggle with her, Im sorry if you dont believe that sterotype doesnt exist anymore but it does and it made my life a living hell in grade school. I get an A and people act surprised, tease me all over...I was inspired by Annabeth Chase. She is strong and smart, also a blondie like me. So her hair is important, sorry. As for Leah, she is an adorable girl and she is doing well in the show. I dont mind much for the show or the movies so her hair color in the adaptation doesnt bother me. But for the books, Annabeth Chase is forever our blond queen.

It’s really interesting to see other people’s opinions on this concept, and I’d love to discuss it further with everybody who responded. <3 I also like that most of you said you appreciate Leah for show Annabeth, and although you really cherish book Annabeth, you seem content to keep them separate in that regard. I would agree, and I think that shows this fandom is making progress since the discourse of the show. Book AND show Annabeth both deserve our respect. <3
