Romeo + Juliet (1996) dir. Baz Luhrmann
Stiles rolls up in the Jeep: You didn’t think you’d be doing this without me, did you? Derek pops up with a smile: Without us. In the backseat Isaac pulls out his headphones and puts his phone down: Wait, you guys said we were going to In-and-Out, why the fuck are we in Beacon Hills.
The Derek Hale (MLD: Gamemakers’ Edition)
Ingredients
1 oz. vodka
½ can Dry Sparkling Cucumber
a dash of dark maple syrup
a dash of lime juice (fresh, bottled, who can care when your whole family is dead)
a handful of blackberries, bruised, like your soul
whatever green garnish you can forage from the ruins of your torched family home
ice (because your piercing murderer’s wolf stare can only freeze our hearts)
Derek Hale is on the moodiest end of the already devastatingly moody Mysterious Loner Dude spectrum. MLD has reason! His psychotic uncle forced him to become a teen murderer…of his own girlfriend, and then hunters wiped out his entire family…except that psychotic uncle.
He’s never been able to lead the pack he wanted, can barely maintain a single friendship, and honestly just doesn’t have the melanin for extended exposure to anything but night or deep shadows. Still, inside he is all endless love and surprise Halloween candy.
To honor the mysterious loner dudeness of Derek, then, we have combined the dry, sharp emptiness of a good vodka with the even drier, sharper emptiness of a cucumber soda, then cut it with the bitter-seedy sweetness of nearly overripe blackberries, with the surprise of maple and lime breaking out from the heart of the glass at the last moment. The result is a high-octane drink that challenges the palate, but then almost immediately disappears into nothing. Which, considering we haven’t seen Derek since 2014, but still can’t get him out of our heads, couldn’t be more appropriate.

IT’S TIME TO BRING THIS BACK
Happy BLUE Moon day, wolf fans!
Update: happy Supermoon Eclipse day! Take a pro-tip from Beacon Hills and stay away from all Dread Doctors and Hot Teen Wolves this weekend.
YES
hi! so, about RULES- a point in tcw's favor is that ben did not actually give up his relationship with bea, if you rewatch it, towards the end, freddie says something along the lines of "it won't actually affect your relationship, she's never in wellington anyways" & balth agrees so it seems more forbidding physical/overemotional affection than ben's relationship altogether. point against tcw- this also affect balth's relationship with kit but that was not brought up at all. have a nice day!
Ah, we lost track of this message! Our apologies (but no promise to eat anyone’s homemade hummus for any length of time).
Anyway, yes, all true! I (Alexis) suspect that this was the trickiest aspect of the Love’s Labor’s Lost premise that the TCW crew had to make fit into the existing dynamics/relationships of NMTD—the No Relationships! rule/pact from Shakespeare is already a stretch for most realistic modern situations, and beggars belief even more when one of the pact participants must stay in his established relationship, or risk Internet revolt.
Too, I *think* the point of the original comedy is that such a pact is impossible? I mean, I haven’t gotten through my promised read of the play, but the whole point of a comedy, as far as theater conventions go, is that romance wins in the end. So, taking that into consideration, I at least am cool with the RULES being absolute nonsense, both in concept and execution. It’s less of a stretch of the imagination than the premises of half the sitcoms on network television, tbh.

Web Series (Not) Wednesday: Lovely Little Losers Episodes 12-17
Welcome back to our first official Poptics feature, Web Series Wednesday, where we examine storytelling in new media—in this case, Lovely Little Losers—with a critical eye. The series is a production of The Candle Wasters and will be releasing every Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday on YouTube. Melissa and Alexis will be discussing it here every weekend (yes, we’re tricking you with the feature title, sorry/notsorry).
Alexis: Okay, so last week’s videos were both MANY and LONG. We’re in plot propulsion mode! I really liked it, but I know you weren’t totally sold.
Melissa: I was just exhausted halfway through. I can take more videos than normal, if they’re regular length. I can take fewer videos if they’ll all twice (or FOUR TIMES) as long. I cannot take both. I stopped paying attention at one point. I looked up and suddenly Peter was in the bath, and I was tired. They’re not playing to the strength of webseries. Maybe it would be different if I watched them the day they aired, and not in one sitting, but #adultlife gets in the way of that. /rant over
