I think to myself "ok. hating this thing isnt doing anything for me. instead of continuing to do that for another 100 years. let's make a little kitty about it." and then many people loves her. thank you world reality and thank you asker. one THOUSAND more saturday!!!!

You if bugs didn't exist
A little white lie 💚
My contribution to Ribbit's and Ragatha's relationship.
Believe it or not I've been working on this comic for months now but only had the time and patience to finish it now.
Rest assured that whenever Ragatha doesn't get enough attention, I will make it my mission to make her shine.
It's just a little funny interaction I had in mind.. tho I'm sure Ragatha had a hard time keeping up her smile when her friend abstracted.
it's crazy 2 me that every time i'm like "the existence of bugs is vital to the very fabric of reality as we know it. if we do not prioritize protect & value bugs, if we lose bugs, the entire world goes with them"
people in the comments will be like "okay but we could at least get rid of ticks and mosquitos because those spread disease."
we actually CANNOT get rid of ticks and mosquitos. not only do we plain lack the technology to lead a pointed extermination effort against them specifically without taking a score of other species down with them, but if we developed that technology and did eradicate mosquitos and ticks, it would be the catalyst of utter ecological collapse the likes of which i think people are not quite comprehending.
the problem is not the existence of bugs. the problem is that our current global systems ensure that specific Peoples in specific places are disproportionately impacted by zoonoses (illness spread between animals and humans).
those same populations also disproportionately lack access to preventative tools & PPE (down to things many of us take for granted so simply as effective bug spray), and crucially access to medical treatment.
the goal should not be an eradicating effort against bugs which would quite literally collapse entire ecosystems, but equitable access to healthcare, investment in medical research to improve preventative and acute treatment for zoonoses, and the destruction of systems which are currently rapidly increasing the threat of zoonoses worldwide (climate change!)
i am not defending the existence of bugs because i think they're cute and because i don't care about the devastating suffering zoonoses cause millions and millions of people.
the point is that the eradication of these species would likewise cause devastation and suffering, but the tools, the money, the minds, the research, the science ALL exist to actually change the world for the better through global public health systems, but it's all being strangulated by imperial fucking systems which have been and continue to destroy everything!
The main reason I’m pushing for people to stop using the term ‘pedophile’ and instead use the term ‘child sexual abusers’, is because since all discussions of child sexual abuse focus on this idea of an evil person who is just out to get kids because they are sexual attracted to them, it makes it hard for kids who where sexually assaulted by people who don’t fit that description to realize they were sexually assaulted.
It didn’t register for me until recently that my experiences of being forced to strip naked multiple times at the mental hospital to be ‘checked’ when I was 14 was sexual assault, because the people who did it were nurses/doctors who clearly didn’t find me sexually attractive but instead used it as a form of humiliation and control towards children they deemed as ‘unruly’ and ‘uncooperative’ (ie. children who asked to be treated like people). I thought only people who fit into this idea of a child attracted pedo could be child sexual abusers, so I thought my experience didn’t count.
Stepping away from the idea that there is a pedophile boggieman and instead highlighting that anyone can be a child sexual abuser will help more people realize that their experiences are sexual assault.
I'm sure this post is full of commentary, so sorry to OP for piling even more on.
I just want to add that so many people focus on the "pedophile" boogeyman because they are way more upset by the thought of someone being sexually attracted to children, rather than actual literal CSA. It's the reason why you see so much energy and focus on "kill your local pedophile" pedojacketing harassment campaigns rather than you know... actually listening to survivors and advocating for youth liberation. No one gives a fuck about kids, but will gleefully fantasize about what they would do if they "caught a pedo"

I haven’t pissed people off lately by reminding them that ALL types of physical punishment of kids has been proven beyond ANY reasonable doubt to have only negative long term outcomes.
So let me scream it from the hilltops:
Stop hitting kids. End of sentence.
If you think, “but I was hit and I turned out just fine” let me pre-reply: NO YOU DID NOT. You think hitting a child is ok, how the fuck does that qualify as “fine”?????? From one abuse survivor to another: please start healing yourself.
This post needs a "it's been 5 years" update, so here we go:

YOU GOTTA BE FUCKING KIDDING ME TUMBLR
So annoying. So GD annoying.
The World Health Organization report I highly recommend because there are so many conclusions that are shocking and yet completely obvious.
For example, being exposed to corporal punishment as a kid makes it more likely for a person to commit domestic violence against a partner. In places where corporal punishment is normal, people are more likely to think that rape and intimate partner violence are normal. Kids who are spanked are more likely to be violent with and to bully other kids.
Spanking is literally teaching a kid that violence is okay and normal and it affects the whole society.
It also talks about how corporal punishment affects the brain in its development. It changes the structure of the brain and slows the development of mental abilities. Kids who get spanked have much stronger hormonal responses to stress.

Is there anything you would want to change from the digital circus (even if it something little) if you have to do it all over again?
I'd want to probably explore Pomni's angry side a bit more. She was originally going to be a much angrier character, but after casting Lizzie, she was so nice and sweet that it was toned down a bit, but I kind of regret that. Some of Pomni's anger issues made it through to the final thing, but I wish I made it more of a key part of her.
What is a "semilichen"?
Me: *sighs* this is some Jan Vondrák nonsense, isn't it? *Googles* yep, called it.
Ok ok, It's not really nonsense, it's just that Jan has a tendency to publish papers that make my life more complicated as a lichenologist than it already is. He loves breaking the field and introducing new concepts and terms and questions to be asked. He's a really cool, really smart, really nice guy who knows his shit, but he's become a bit of an inside joke in our lab group, to the point that when stuff gets complicated we yell "JAAAAN!!!" in the style of "KAHHHHN!" from Star Trek.
Anyhow, a semilichen (or an alcobiosis as it is sometimes called), is a community of fungi and photosynthesizing organisms like green algae or cyanobacteria that grow together and seem to have some sort of symbiotic association, but are not as like, close? or closed? as a true lichen symbiosis. It is something that falls juuuust short of being a lichen by being less structured and less like, obvious. Usually, it looks like a sort of undifferentiated slime. So where is the line between semilichen and lichen? A lichen has a thallus--a "body" which has specialized structures made up of more-or-less organized fungal hyphae and photobiont cells. Semilichens are more of a general mixture of fungi and photobiont cells without structure or organization. A lichen is a casserole, and a semilichen is a soup. It's not a perfect metaphor but its all I got.
This is all still new, emerging science mostly being done by a small group of researchers, but it is all very exciting and I hope we can watch the development of this field in real time!
