ok so the vent blogs are exhausting (especially since there’s discourse over the mods of the red one rn), but looking back on that post you made about headcanon games, curiosity and levity in the tag, etc... what if i made a blog for that sort of thing? i was originally ventdotcherp or whatever bc i wanted to actually make a worthwhile vent blog that didn’t attack people; now i see that there’s no need for a vent acc like that and wanna bring joy to the tag.

I think that would be a much welcomed alternative. Not just a neutral place for everyone and their mother dumping their shit that inevitably turns cancerous but an actual, tangible, deliberate place for good vibes and chill activities. I applaud you for giving the feral Cherp population ample enrichment for happy, healthy engagement.

I’ve mostly moved to discord rp in the span post-Cherubplay, but I’ve been keeping an eye out on Cherp! It’s nice to hear people talk about rps that they enjoy there, despite what’s going on! And, that being said, I get nostalgic when I see all these theme blogs pop in- I really hope things go well for you guys! 

I’m definitely here as a resource for all sorts of gushing types of emotions. Good luck, have fun, be safe, and remember to take care of yourself beyond everything else!

I’m not sure of whether or not I’d like to join because of other things that I’ve heard. I might see what happens at the formal launch rather than the beta, but it looks a little chaotic right now, so I think I’ll wait for now! ^^

The end

Cherubplay is now read-only. The read only archive will remain online for a while - at least until the end of the year, probably longer - so you’ll still be able to export your chats until then.

Whilst I was the only official staff member, there are various other people I’d like to mention and thank:

Over the last 5 years, 9 months and 18 days, 51,036 users have taken part in 1,210,968 chats and sent 56,984,301 messages. Starting with Homestuck and encompassing too many fandoms to list, Cherubplay was a hub of creativity. It brought people together, allowed them to create new worlds and let them bond through shared fiction. Though the site is over I hope the friendships and memories created here will last for years to come. After all, the real Cherubplay was the friends we made along the way.

The schedule

I’m currently working on an enhanced exporter, which will allow you to download all of your chats, prompts and directory requests in a single bundle. During the month of July this functionality will gradually be rolled out to users. You’ll be able to find the exporter in the Account section, and if it’s not available to you yet then it’ll show the date when it will become available.

On the 1st of September, the front page will be taken offline, and your prompts, the directory and user connections will become read only. At this point it won’t be possible to create any new chats, but your existing chats will function as they do now.

On the 1st of October, all of your chats will become read-only. At this point all you’ll be able to do on Cherubplay is export and download your account data.

At some point after that the site will be taken offline. I’m not sure exactly when yet. Stay tuned to this blog for further updates.

i’m really glad to see new fandoms popping up on cherubplay! it makes me feel like there’s a lot of hope- we’re changing as media develops, and no matter how obscure your fandom is, you have a shot of finding someone else who’s interested!!

Five years

Yesterday marked the fifth anniversary of Cherubplay’s public opening.

I planned a significant update to the site, but there’s still some important bug fixing to do and due to computer issues I probably won’t be able to finish it until I’m back on my desktop computer in a couple of weeks.

is anyone else having trouble w cherubplay loading? the site just keeps saying connecting but not loading anything

i know that i personally am! it might have something to do with your browser and the update- i hear that chrome has been having some issues in particular! the directory still works, though, from what i can tell!

i sent an ask to cherubdev, i’m sure that plenty of other people did, so the most we can do now is wait!

A few updates

User connections

I’ve noticed some people trying to chat with a specific individual by posting prompts in the directory, so I’m experimenting with a new way of chatting with people you know. If you and the person you want to chat with know each other’s usernames, you can connect to each other via the user connections page.

Note that this is not like friend requesting on other sites - it doesn’t notify the other person that you’re trying to connect to them, you have to contact them by other means to ask them to create a mutual connection.

Easier blacklisting

If you’re on desktop Firefox or Chrome, there’s now an easier way to add tags to your blacklist. If you see a tag you don’t like, you can simply drag it onto the “Blacklisted tags” menu item to hide it.

Less confusing tab titles

The “New request” and “New prompt” tab titles are now prefixed with “Write a…” to avoid confusion with the “New message” tab title.

Miscellany

Changed the chat end message to always say “<symbol> ended the chat.” regardless of whether they ended or deleted it.

Fixed group chat requests which are stuck with all their slots filled.

Changed permissions on the away message feature so banned users can no longer set an away message.

Fixed a server error when trying to look at a tag before clicking through the blacklist introduction message.

Fixed a server error caused by entering an invalid email address on the account page.

Fixed a server error caused by entering an invalid username on the forgot password page.

i think for me, a lot of what i did to get started writing ocs was to consider the ones that i have established. because a lot of what you do for a prompt is marketing an oc, but it’s also marketing a world, too! so it’s kind of a double edged sword, depending on which route you go

while you might have some issues (like cherubark mentioned, the flatland oc and the guy that used that fc of aph scotland come to mind), there are times where you find that diamond! ozzy hayes and lorne martel, if you’re out there i want to marry you one day.

it’s persistence, really. it’s knowing your ocs enough to know what’ll work with them and also that ability to step back and try something new, and it’s shaping a world that someone else will want to be a part of, and it’s not giving up if the first few responses don’t work out.

i also recommend taking prompts as ocs before writing your own! you never know if you’ll write a starter you can repurpose or get ideas from the ooc banter!
