I think if you mistook Dick and Bruce for father and son Dick would immediately correct you like it was a weird assumption, but if you mistook them for lovers he’d feel a slight sense of pride and kinda let you believe that depending on the circumstances. Bruce would do the opposite

In general Dick is the member of the duo who’s more… enticed by the implication of them being romantic not because that’s what he finds to be the most accurate label for their relationship (god knows it’s more complicated than that) but because of what that means about people perceiving them- he likes the sound of being Bruce’s other half/equal in that he craves closeness and often doubts if Bruce respects or even values him. Husband says to him that they’re perceived as bonded equals. He bristles against father and son mainly because of the authority/ownership implied in that description and the implied dynamics, when he’s spent so long vying for Bruce’s respect and to be seen as not a child.

And Bruce, in some sense, could enjoy thinking of Dick as his partner but he also holds a lot more guilt around hurting Dick and he’s generally… well put simply he won’t defend his reputation as much as Dick is willing to do it for him. He’s more considering of the actual implications of them being lovers. Father/son is something he sees as a sort of guilty pleasure- who is he to usurp John Grayson? For Bruce, for who losing his parents was such a major trauma, who is he to claim that he filled that void for Dick? It’s something that makes him feel good to imagine, for a second, but if he seriously thinks about it he feels inadequate. That, and how tied Bruce claiming paternalism is to the period of their relationship where Bruce felt out of control of their relationship and was at the same time trying to force Dick to stay closer and push him away.
