Gloucester Street, showing the old post office, from 1900 by Lisk-Carew Brothers
1933 Freetown postcard by Lisk-Carew Brothers
A postcard of Freetown published by Levy Fils et Cie, Paris.
Historical postcards documenting Africa and it’s people during the intense time of European Colonialism
“postcards had played a role in popularizing the venture of European colonial rule and served to reinforcing the stereotype the European had of Africa.”
The African Section of the Library of Congress
What a collection! ---”Throughout the period of European colonialism in Africa, #postcards played an important role in popularizing the venture of European colonial rule and in perpetuating long-held stereotypes of the vast African continent”
The Arab Image Foundation (AIF) works at the intersection of photographic, artistic, research, and preservation practices.
I love AIF’s way of showcasing their postcards and preservation practices
Zoom calls and texts are emotionally draining, but exchanging handwritten notes can be sublime.
Perhaps it’s simply a break from a screen or just another way to mark the passage of time when the world seems to be on an indefinite hold.

Soon to be postcard <3
In the pandemic, many have rediscovered the sheer pleasure of writing to strangers, with new schemes spreading hope and connection around the world
My letter-loving and postcard-making made it into the @guardian (March 23 2021!): “For Najmeh Modarres, 37, letter-writing was an act of memorialisation prompted by an earlier health crisis....”
A letter always seemed to me like immortality because it is the mind alone without corporeal friend.
