“Classic Rock is 90s at the latest. The latest!” This is ridiculous! Axel isn’t old! ... Is he? The loudness of his voice makes him realize that he’s getting a little... heated. He takes a deep breath, rubbing his temple and sighing.  “Okay. Okay. If MCR is classic rock... what would The Beatles be, then? The Rolling Stones? Queen?”

Living under this building’s roof ( on the second floor, in a small little room he can actually call his own, with a comfy bed, books, the occasional trinket and treasure ), Riku works practically dawn to dusk, with no hesitation nor complaint.

To those who have chosen to house him, to give more love and happiness than that old house of his could ever provide—- he owes at least that much.

Dealing with difficult customers and all.

A barista, a waiter, he does everything and anything he can to help around the café as often and plentiful as he can – even if it sometimes means kicking out the occasional drunkard ( not harshly, assisting them to a nearby police station, hotel, taxi ) or encounters like this.

Socially awkward as he might be, he is kind – and kicking out the one who has literally been here for at least twelve hours now.

Impatience threatens to furrow his brow, though he represses it ; and taps his pencil upon his order booklet lightly, eyes drawn to the aforementioned cup.

“Then how about a refill? Looks like this one’s gone cold.”

He’s beginning to suspect about this situation - but perhaps he’ll give it another day or two to see if it’s a repeat process, and therefore similar to his own.

Oh. God. He’s talking. Again. Words. From other people’s mouths: ...............Axel’s attention span’s biggest weakness. Axel struggles to connect the dots, pushing his head up and staring Riku right in the eye. He waves his finger at him, gesture wiggly and wavy with his lack of energy. 

 “Seems like that depends on you. Are you going to kick me out after the refill? Because if so,” he says, taking the tiniest, loudest possible slurp of the cold, black coffee. It tastes terrible. But his gives a refreshed, “Ahhhhh,” to hammer in the point that he can do this forever.  He smacks his lips together. “I'm still not done with this one. And it would be bad business etiquette to kick me out until I’m finished. Sorry, pal. You’re trapped with me by the rules of social convention until I’m finished with this nap.”

“Don’t test me,” he yawns. “I’m a pro at bad Yelp reviews.”

“Hey. I bought a cup of coffee,” Axel drones. Twelve hours ago, not that he realizes how late it’s gotten, or cares that that small cup of black coffee was the cheapest item on their menu or that it’s five minutes past closing. “I’m still drinkin’ it,” he says, looking into the long-since freezing cup and stirring it with the shop’s custom mouse-head spoons. 

“You can’t kick me out. I’m a paying customer,” he mutters, eyes struggling to stay open as his mind wanders back to how good his first cat-nap since getting kicked out of his apartment felt. “Just give me five more minutes, Mom, I’ll be out of your hair....” If he knows that he just called the barista ‘Mom’ he’s not showing it. He’s not showing anything at all, really, as he’s just faceplanted back down on to the table he’s been hoarding all day.

Dealing with customers this disastrous must suck. Axel sure is glad he doesn’t have to.

“I never figured you for an optimist, Xiggy,” Axel smirks, knowing very well how much Xigbar hates being called that. “But you know as well as I do that it always, always get worse." He takes another hit on Tesla, exhaling nice and slow. “Is Saix bothering you again? Or is this a classic case of trouble in paradise with your boss-slash-boyfriend.” Axel doesn’t seem to care much either way.

     {☾} – If looks could kill, Axel would have been dead yesterday. He lunges to grab the pill bottle from Axel, for it only to be held out of his reach. He almost hits Axel to get back his scrips back, but takes a few steps away and lets out a deep breath. 

      “Do not lecture me, Axel. I am fine.” He runs his hands through tangled hair and shakes his head. “Once I am out of school I will be off it forever.” The young man looks at the burrito on the ground and picks it up, peeling off the paper and staring at it. “Only two more years.. then I will finally be worth something in this goddamn world.” He takes a bite out of it, but it is small. He most certainly has not been eating either. 

Axel’s glad Saix didn’t hit him---Saix is a lot stronger than him, and Axel would’ve been out for the count. Which would’ve sucked especially considering he just bought him breakfast. 

“You’re really something else, you know that?” He sighs, shaking his head. “You’ve always been worth something. You’re special. Always have been. Don’t you know that? You don’t need a piece of paper or a fancy title to prove it. And even if you did---you’re allowed to go at a steady pace to get it. You should be allowed to breathe. And eat. And sleep. And do regular college kid drugs instead of fucking opioids.”
