The 71 m high Leshan Giant Buddha, of which construction began in 713 and was completed in 803 (Tang dynasty), Sichuan, China. Carved into the cliff face of Cretaceous red bed sandstones at the confluence of the Min and Dadu Rivers in southern Sichuan Province, China, near the city of Leshan, the statue gazes across the water toward Mount Emei, with the rivers flowing beneath its feet. It is the largest and tallest stone Buddha in the world and, by a considerable margin, the tallest pre-modern statue ever created. The sculpture stands more than four kilometers (2.5 miles) from Wuyou Temple.

Since 1996, the Mount Emei Scenic Area — which includes the Leshan Giant Buddha — has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
