context for this; the abc article here
My recollection of the events mixed with footage I've seen from others at the event and other reporting; The cops fumbled their responce to a suspected bomb threat. They started by coming up behind to the stage area in Forrest chase, where the elders were talking, in part about the justice systems mass mistreatment of Indigenous people in custody. You can thus imagine how people would feel about being told to move on by the police with no reason would feel.
The police did not actually communicate to organisers or us in the crowd that there was an issue, instead crowding those on stage until one of the elders told us very plainly that there was a bomb threat (the police later added that there had been an explosion else where in the city, which I have not seen substantiated in official reporting). This caused a lot of people to move out of forrest chase and toward the march route very quickly. We were then effectively pinned in Murray Street Mall for a time due to the Police kettling us on one side and William street to the other. After a time, we then kicked off the march propper.
The ABC article has reported 300, when it was far closer to 2000 minimum. They also, in later additions, focus on Roger Cook's response and his constant use of the term "Australia Day" is telling and frustrating.
The suspect who threw the device (what is apparently some kind of home made nail bomb based on current reporting) is in custody. The place that is likely his home is being searched, with more details to come tomorrow.
I'm glad no one was hurt. Despite moody weather and its companion of uncertainty, people's moods were kept up by chanting, and music. This day is a day of morning and survival.
I am in solidarity with Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander people forever.

There was an attempted terrorist attack at an Invasion Day rally in Perth on 26/01/2026. A man threw a bomb which thankfully did not explode into a crowd of people at an event with approximately 2,500 people in attendance and despite literally committing an act of terrorism, one that could've killed hundreds if not thousands of people, was only charged with "possession of explosives" and "unlawful intent to harm". This country is a joke.

This comes after a couple of news stories were pushed out over the last two days in relation to a man throwing a homemade bomb into a crowd of people peacefully gathering on a significant day in the calendar. The incident occurred in Perth on January 26th, when a man clad in black threw a 'homemade explosive device containing ball bearings, nails and chemicals' (aka a bomb) into an Invasion Day rally. Thankfully, the bomb designed to explode on impact did not detonate. The man was subsequently arrested for the attempted terrorist attack after fleeing the scene, with police confirming the fragment had the 'potential to seriously injure or kill people.' His identity has been suppressed to 'protect him in a custodial environment.' Calls for his identification have of course been limited, with large portions of the media and political landscape just not being too fussed about a radicalised young man attempting to kill Australians in broad daylight apparently.
Both this and the Chaser.
Murdoch media and duopoly's response to this has been abysmal, but sadly, not surprising.
A joint statement by WA Police, the Australian Federal Police and domestic security agency ASIO say the agencies' investigations are ongoing
Something at least.
Imps got in the cucumber patch!
I am literally begging anyone outside of Perth WA to pay attention to what happened on January 26th
posting this here because there's been so little coverage on a literal attempted bombing here in Perth
