i dislike the whole “horror is so back” narrative people are throwing around recently with obsession and backrooms. both are great movies, but horror was also so back with the long walk. and sinners. and the substance. and nosferatu. and literally anything directed by jordan peele. horror as a genre will always have its flops. but there will always be those few that revive the hype.

the thing about being bullied for being weird as a kid is that even if you've always embraced being weird your brain is still always looking for the line where it's too much. you can be as proudly and intentionally weird as you want and you can love being weird but your mind is still convinced there's a point where you get too weird and people start treating you like a weird looking bug again. also it feels like you reach that point 500 times a day even if everyone you've spoken to today found you pleasant and likable and even if you're completely alone in your house with nobody looking at you at all.

You believe sex and gender are synonymous and there is one sex that is the oppressor and one sex that is the oppressed. You believe this is intrinsic. No nuance, no understanding, no space for non-Eurocentric concepts of gender, no space for the concept of variance in gender identity. You acknowledge that gender is a performance and that what one considers to be an expression of their gender is informed by the society they live in but you refuse to acknowledge that gender can be at odds with a person’s sex and the societal expectations placed on them by that. You bitch and moan about the tiny little box women are kept in and then you do advanced phrenology to try to prove a woman is a ‘actually a man’ and punish her if she does not look, sound or behave the way you expect women to behave. Speaking as a childhood Harry Potter fan, the enduring persistence of its popularity including amongst adults is 100% because it is slop without substance.

It flirts with the idea of rebellion and emancipation from slavery but ultimately discredits those notions by having the rebel leader become a lead cop in the institution that was repressing him and by making emancipation seem silly.

It reflects the chauvinisms of a British aristocrat who offers an impossible narrative of an abused child escaping abuse through the purity of their Aryan magic blood. It’s a fantasy that doesn’t even pretend to offer catharsis or self-actualization, merely hundreds of pages of occasionally racist drivel about a special little boy who joins the SS after reforming them from the inside.

That’s why it has maintained such reverence - because it doesn’t actually offer a subversive story but the aesthetic of one while reflecting the conservative biases of the author. It speaks to a certain liberal perspective that is progressive only so far as the oppressed don’t hurt their feelings.

Something about the bastardization of the story time and time again proves that nobody in power really cares about the people who would resonate with King’s Carrie White. A girl so ugly and repulsive she’s been removed from her own story. The societal need for women and girls to be constantly perceived as attractive is what fuels a fair amount of her torment in the book, but that person isn’t even allowed to exist on the screen. We cannot empathize with her; it isn’t allowed. It’s fascinating to me.

🔥Loki and Neurodivergence: The Gift of Seeing Differently

There is a reason many neurodivergent people feel drawn to Loki.

Not because Loki was a “neurodivergent god” in the historical sense — the Norse world did not have our modern concepts of autism, ADHD, or neurodiversity.

But mythology has always given us figures who represent experiences that are difficult to name.

And Loki has always been someone who does not fit the expected pattern.

Loki is the one who finds the unusual solution. When the gods face impossible problems, his mind moves sideways. He sees paths others overlook.

Yet the same qualities that make him valuable also make him difficult for others to accept.

That contradiction is familiar to many neurodivergent people: being praised for creativity when it solves a problem, but criticized when that same difference challenges expectations.

Loki is a shapeshifter, a boundary-crosser, a being who refuses to stay in one category. His stories invite us to think about identity, adaptation, and the masks we wear to navigate the world.

A mask can protect us.

But a mask should not become a prison.

Loki also reminds us of the power of humor. His laughter is not always gentle, but it reveals what others try to ignore. For many neurodivergent people, humor is a survival tool — a way to handle a world that can feel confusing, overwhelming, or too rigid.

Loki is not a symbol of neurodivergence.

He is a reminder that different ways of thinking have always existed.

The world needs people who question, who notice, who imagine another way.

The trickster is not always the one who breaks the rules.

Sometimes the trickster is the one who shows us that the rules were never the only way.

Marriage signifiers other than wedding bands

The husband taking the wife's name / newlyweds inventing a new surname upon marriage

No concept of virginity or bastardry

More than 2 genders/no concept of gender

Monotheism, but not creationism

Gods that don’t look like people

Domesticated pets that aren’t re-skinned dogs and cats

Some normalized supernatural element that has nothing to do with the plot

Magical communication that isn’t Fantasy Zoom

“Books” that aren’t bound or scrolls

A nonverbal means of communicating, like sign language

A race of people who are obligate carnivores/ vegetarians/ vegans/ pescatarians (not religious, biological imperative)

I’ve done about half of these myself in one WIP or another and a little detail here or there goes a long way in reminding the audience that this isn’t Kansas anymore.
