Whump Prompt #1653
Anon asked:
Armor whump? Am having trouble injuring my knight character.
I've been thinking about this recently:
Weapons that find the one weak-spot in the armour.
The whumpee not realising they're bleeding until it starts to seep through the joints in the armour.
The knight gets tossed into a river, and fights tooth and nail to stay above the water as the armour pulls them under. By the time they claw their way to shore, they're so exhausted all they can do is lay on the riverbanks and wait. Bonus points if they're bleeding/lose their helmet so they hit their head on the rocks.
Maybe they get stranded after their horse gets spooked, so they're forced to carry their gear and armour on foot. The nights are frigid and unforgiving, and a torrential rain freezes the knight to their core. It takes three days for them to reach the next town, and they all but collapse into the nearest tavern, shivering and coughing as an illness takes hold. Maybe word spreads about the knights arrival and a local healer takes pity on them and visits the tavern regularly to nurse them back to strength.
Mid-battle their visor could get damaged/obscured with debris, so they're unable to see where the blows are coming from. They either continue to fight with limited vision, or take their helmet off. Either way its a death sentence.
The knight lays on the battlefield, exhausted. Their armour is too heavy to move, but they're content to stare into the grey sky. The stench of death threatens their stomach, but they haven't eaten enough for it to matter.
I've got a prompt about this in my notes, but what about the armour getting dented, and causing damage that could range from light bruising/abrasions to broken bones and internal bleeding - maybe even a traumatic brain injury if it happens to the helmet.

There's a certain poetry to finishing this right as it's getting dark and blue outside.
(This came out so fucking good I will definitely be making this again.)
Certainly!
I was loosely following a wassail recipe I found but made some substitutions, and this might be closer to a mulled cider than a true wassail, but either way it's delicious.
Ingredients:
-64 floz (~2 litres) of apple cider
-5 mid sized oranges
-1 regular or 2 small lemons
-1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
-3 or 4 cinnamon sticks (I used three since one was chonky)
-fresh ginger root (or 1/4 tsp ground ginger)
-15 whole cloves or 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
-1 Tablespoon of honey
Optional: your choice of rum or brandy
Preparations:
Juice four of the five oranges and your lemon(s). Slice the fifth orange and poke the whole cloves into the slices.
Thinly slice the ginger root. I ended up only using one of the two pictured, and each of those were about 4 inches long or so.
Add all of the ingredients to your cooking vessel and bring to a medium heat. You want to see a bit of bubbling in the liquid (not a rolling boil) and a froth/foam will form on top. This is fine!
Reduce to a low simmer (around a 3 out of 10) for 30-40 minutes. Stir everything in the pot in about five minute intervals.
Storage:
If you aren't going to drink it all immediately, you can pour it back into the original cider container or any air tight container and keep it in the fridge.
Yearly reblog of my wassail recipe with the addendum that you DO NOT need fresh ingredients for this.
I've opted to use a 1/4 teaspoon of all four spices, and got a single serve thing of Simply Orange orange juice and grocery store lemon juice instead of freshly juiced citruses the last couple times I've made this. If you want to just buy a bunch of things, toss them into a pot together, and simmer them you absolutely can do that.

Tissue Series
These pieces are made of Japanese mulberry paper and the gilded edges of old books. They are constructed by a technique of rolling and shaping narrow strips of paper called quilling or paper filigree. Quilling was first practiced by Renaissance nuns and monks who are said to have made artistic use of the gilded edges of worn out bibles, and later by 18th century ladies who made artistic use of lots of free time.
