i had a dramione dream a long time ago in which draco was this lestat-type old age vampire who spent his life looking for his soulmate until he found hermione the human, who lived her human life in the company of lestat!draco and then passed away, only to reincarnate, grow up, meet lestat!draco and spend her life with him again and this repeated over several hundred years and several hermione iterations until her very last reincarnation which caused lestat!draco to actually age and they both passed away into eternity together. it was this beautiful dream where lestat!draco had spent his long life waiting and searching for hermione's variants and dedicating his life to her. he even had this room of paintings of pictures of each of her variants, because she really was the only one for him.

ever since then, whenever i read a fic for any one ship, i treat all of the previously read fics for that ship are just previous reincarnations of that ship and thinking about it like that really enhances my experience of reading fanfic, especially slow-burn, because it just adds to the richness of the ship in my head. truly one thousand yearning lifetimes for the same two idiots over and over again until they age into oblivion into the cupboards at the back of my mind.
