In the "El Parterre" section of the "Parque del Buen Retiro" in Madrid Spain there are a series of sculptured trees that look like something out of a Dr. Sues book. I know they're Cypress trees. Rock of Gibraltar - Full of obese Brits and Barbary macaques. Kind of a gross place. Loud tourists yelling at animals to turn toward them for a picture was pretty much the whole experience. The only saving grace was the macaques stealing food from the tourists. Salamanca. Famous for building the first University in Spain and now has a large population of international students. You can see the merging of art styles from across Europe in the graffiti scene on the sandstone buildings. The New Town Hall in Munich, Germany. Neues Rathaus is the home of the Mayor and the city council, which has its conference room here. At the same time, the council factions and small parts of the city administration are accommodated in the New Town Hall. The richly decorated, neo-gothic library hall was built to accommodate the Council's legal library and is still a publicly available legal library under the administration of the Munich City Library. "Work sets you free" The words on the gate of Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site. Visiting this desecrated ground leaves you in a state of shock and melancholy. I felt a gruesome malaise come over me as I wandered the grounds. You see the bunk houses, prison cells, gas chambers, and ovens. You're faced with the macabre photos taken from a time when the camp was active. You see every dark corner of humanity in this place. You feel the fear and desperation. You never forget. Then, tucked at the far end of the empty grounds you find a convent. Definitely not what I was expecting to find. Beyond the northern wall of the Memorial Site, behind the Mortal Agony of Christ Chapel, is the Carmelite Convent of the Precious Blood. The order of the Discalced Carmelites was founded by Saint Teresa of Ávila in the sixteenth century. The Nymphenburg Palace (Palace of the Nymphs) is a Baroque palace situated in Munich's western district. When I visited I had just come from the Dachau concentration camp, located about 10 miles away. I always get anxious when viewing seats of power. Like I'm in danger for trespassing in body and thought. This place was no different. I felt an eerie and soulless energy which betrayed the opulent presentation. Like a beautiful lie.
