Omega: TIS BUT A SCRATCH

Right off the bat, say hello to a new artist: the one and only Jon Gray! Jon is another fan-turned-contributor, one who actually got a little shoutout 20 issues back

After years of Sonic comics by superhero artists with varying levels of success, Jon’s style IMMEDIATELY exudes a ton of charm. He’s always been one of my favorite artists on the Sonic comics. Look at how cute and expressive the characters are! Look how lively and cartoony it is! While artists like Butler are undoubtedly very technically skilled, I think this look fits Sonic so much better than the attempts at giving Mobians human proportions

Jon’s actually still contributing to Sonic to this day (as well as other comics), being a recurring cover artist for the IDW comics and a story in the IDW annual. He’s also just a cool guy in general (even if he loves to torment Twitter with his puns), and is also a teacher at an art school I’ve got some friends at. So that’s cool. I’m really happy to finally get to his stuff in my retrospective

Yep- Jon Gray was a VERY nice breath of fresh air during this time, and his art is one of the very few decent things to come out of this particular era of the comics.

It’s just such a pity that THIS story had to be his debut work. Yeowch.

Also, don’t pay much attention to this particular plot point of Sonic having a universal translator as now effectively being a physical part of his being- not a whole lot is really gonna be done with it.

Yeah, this is the one. Y’all knew this was coming and have been messaging me about it for the last few weeks

It’s the one with “The Slap”

What is “The Slap”? Why does everyone care so much about it? Is it even that big of a deal? The answer is, of course, no. It’s just more dumb relationship drama in a series known for dumb relationship drama. But I’m getting ahead of myself here. Let’s just get into the issue

Side note: This cover is a tribute to the cover of Amazing Spider-Man #50, with Sonic in the place of Spider-Man and Sally in the place of… Peter Parker? Does this mean Sonic is Sally’s alter-ego. Do we have a Fight Club situation on our hands here

Im having one of those days where I cant seem to draw what is in my head and i cant figure out how to do textures in the new Blender so the Sally model i was working on is now on the back burner so yeah I’m in kind of a sour frustrated mood
