himmler was grooming him, it was exactly what he realized. it took a few phone calls out to berlin and a little bit of movement later. he went from oberstgruppenführer to reichsminister quicker than he anticipated. after having settled in the uk, it was obvious it wouldn’t be the reichsmarschall. it would go from that to reichsminister under the direct orders of himmler. he was sitting in the palace when he got the call and... per that, he knew what was to come next. not having the girls made this all bittersweet, but he needed to find victoria. he didn’t want it. the position was solely to topple things, if he could play the system to his hand and use it to ruin it? he would. he was going to take the reich and run it down right into the place it belonged: the ground. this promotion might help him, especially if he was promoted to führer in the next little bit like it felt like coming next. either way, john knew victoria’s temper and how horrible this would come out.

“ma’am,” instead of just naming her, her ladies around her, bowing his head slightly. “we need to go to the gardens. i have a few things to tend to that involve needing your help. it’s rather urgent. call came in from berlin. you can bring your darling dash....” his voice calm, almost trying to prepare himself. he could stay by her side, but as an onlooker and trying to control the situations in the palace if he possibly could, but this would take things a little further. himmler knew what was going on between the two of them. or he thought he knew. nobody knew the gravity of feelings john carried for the little queen. nobody could tell. “ladies, i apologize for stealing her away. utmost importance.”

it’s hard to stomach the day he had been put through, ever since thomas -- it’s like his stomach is heavier. the bile almost rising, but he was where he was and he was in a position to suck it up. coming in through the door, this new place... open. spacious. it wasn’t the home on roxboro. it was some fancy apartment and he was feeling alone. so fucking alone, but he always soldiered on. jennifer, she was... growing up. amy wasn’t too far along and everything was toppling down before he could try to pick it up. hearing something in the far room, john yelled out. “helen?”

navigating, he could smell her. the scent she gave off alongside the perfume she always wore. john could spot her from miles away if given chance. the shuffling, though, caused him to find her. not a challenge, but by instinct. after everything they’ve been through, he wanted to be near her. as if hearing how much of a hero thomas was and the immediate dangers to his family, the perfect facade of a family fell right down. “helen?” he called out, looking around.
