What are we (yes we) even doing anymore..?
hmmmmm. fic where rocky and/or adrian are exorbitantly worried about the power dynamic that presents itself with grace being alone on an alien planet, relying solely on the goodwill of significantly stronger and somewhat more intelligent beings to survive, and rocky and adrian being terrified of accidentally pressuring grace into a relationship because of it. the angst and care and tenderness that goes along with that concept. hmmmmmmmmmm

The other day I saw someone bitching on bsky about how long time Witch hat manga fans are (allegedly) frustrated that the new explosion of Olruggio and Quifrey shipping culture born from the anime adaptation in ruining the fandom. OP claimed this could not possibly be true bc OruFrey shippers were always part of the fandom.
This righteous indignation came from, of course, someone with a Quifrey pfp who has been posting OruFrey non stop for weeks while not making a single post about Coco, or Tetia, or Agott, or etc etc.
I'm harkened back to when Dungeon Meshi got an anime, and a fandom that had previously been thoroughly dominated by Falin/Marcille, an F/F ship, was suddenly taken over by people shipping Senshi and Chilchuck. Notably this beat out the previously popular Kabru/Laios, a ship featuring a black man with a character heavily coded and interpreted as autistic.
To the credit of anime onlys, Kabru takes some time to show up and get real interaction with Laios. That said, while I'm not much of a shipper Senshi and Chilchuck feel lacking in any real chemistry considering the former mistakes the latter for a child for most of the series, and it kind of felt like the anime fandom was just looking for any two men that they didn't find too "weird" to mash together until something better came along. This is in spite of Marcille's very clear devotion and love (be it platonic or romantic) for Falin being evident from the get go.
This is in no way a manifesto against shipping the pretty beautiful Witch Hat Atelier men, but I DO think it's worth taking a minute to consider how larger fandom spaces tend to favor and center men, even in works that are explicitly about women and girls. Fandom/shipping culture isn't a monolith, but there are a lot of cases where the original work ends up coming second to whatever hot guys du jour can be slotted into the popular, pre-rendered bl roles and tropes, and personally I think fandom spaces actually suffer from it.
Edit: this post is advocating for reducing how much we center fandom around shipping men and advocating for more investment in female characters generally, including outside of shipping. This post is not about shipping other characters from Witch Hat.

Lillith repeats the same learned notion about how insignificant humans are that every other God has said, and therefore, she should too. Yet she kills Alia with such tenderness. She gifts her a peaceful slumber free of nightmares and visions, and covers her with thick roots so that no person can ever harm her body again. And all because she feels angry over her life, she feels angry that Alia did not have much of a choice being part of the sect, that she was tortured and pushed towards her destined powerful existence, yet still being used as a Seraph until her very end. And so she frees her in a drastic, but most peaceful way. She euthanizes her like a pitiful animal. And that does not sound like the actions of someone who truly finds humans' struggles in life insignificant even if she still views them as lesser beings.
something about lillith having only done acts of kindness towards girls. something about her mercy killing alia and being so genuinely upsed about what she had to go through and something about her telling arthur yeah okay but now play a song that's actually about your daughter. and something about her not allowing faroe's memory to be wiped from the world even if it goes against every single one of her interests. something about lillith not understanding what it feels like to be human but understanding what it feels like to be a neglected abused daughter
Faroeverse!!! (ft human!Lillith) But specifically @professionallyhomosexual’s beautiful vision for Malevolent: Threshold (below) (SPOLIERS FOR EP 60)
Lillith malevolent as a character really does ask the age-old question: What if your abusive dad was immortal and one of the most powerful beings in existence? I just can't get over how actually horrific it'd be to have an immortal abusive parent who has power over you. Like irl, "they'll die eventually"/"you'll outlive them" is a common comfort for people stuck in abusive situations. But what if your abuser couldn't die or weaken with age? What if they were stuck in a specific state forever? What if they had the power to control everything around you? What if there was almost no way to tell when they were listening and when they weren't? What if there was almost no tangible way to escape or fight back against them? Lillith malevolent I will forever be abnormal about you and the fact your evil dad trapped you in a fucking pocket dimension between worlds (LITERALLY tearing your entire being apart) for what felt like centuries (because time passes slower in dreams). I'm sooooo
Lillith and Kayne if they loved each other

Do you think Arthurs Parents introduced baby Arthur to their god?
