They make me physically ill
I hate telling people who aren’t in band that I’m in band because they ask what instrument I play expecting something beautiful like the trombone or flute and then I tell them I play trombone
“Yeah I jerk off my instrument while making out with the lip, don’t forget the lubrication and oil before you play straight farts. also I spend months of my time on it just to drop it in a year when I graduate”
t minus 12 hours to launch
Imagine Grace defined his name as the elegance definition of grace and Rocky spends years thinking how fucking ironic this clumsy leaky space blobs name is.
Until Grace slips out a sentence along the lines of "could you give me a little grace here" and Rocky immediately points out he used a word wrong so Grace has to explain that yeah, grace means elegance but it can also mean mercy sometimes too.
And Rocky has to suddenly reconcile that the clumsy leaky blob that saved his life twice, that almost certainly doomed himself to come back for him, name is Mercy.
red string of fate but the red string is the petrova line???
I usually hate soulmate au’s but you can’t tell me this wouldn’t hit. actually it probably does exist lmao
I’ve never read a red string fic but imagine:
grace spent his whole life with the string leading straight up in the sky, he honestly lost hope in romance. now imagine his SURPRISE when the alien spaceship coming his way connects to his string.
bonus if rocky doesn’t see the string or it doesn’t exist to eridians, and grace has to explain to him that an entire race belongs on destiny for mating and his long awaited love is a sentient rock light years away and centuries older than him
I never matured out of crying and whining when I don’t get my way 😭
has anyone ever jorked their shi so hard their uterus starts cramping? did I bruise my insides or something because it feels like I’m 2cm dialated ready to pop out a golf ball
there’s something so painful about Grace being alone in space and forced to remember the life he left behind as he goes deeper into a mission he won’t leave alive :(
however; I think the worst part of it is this: what if Grace doesn’t fully remember his life?
he remembers the majority of course, the big picture in time and eventually, how he is “murdered”
BUT
what is there to refresh his memory on the details? what if he never remembers his favorite toothpaste brand, the name of the tv show he watched every night with his tv dinners? he mourns his life, misses who he was- yet he doesn’t remember what he misses.
he remembers the confident girl who he passed his ball to, the girl who was eager to answer and who always brought him an apple on Fridays- it was adorable honestly, an apple away to keep Dr grace away!!- and though he knows he misses her, misses his students, he cannot for the life of him remember her name.
he misses the cotton candy he ate when he was fourteen on his first date, but he doesn’t remember where it was from
he misses the waitress who always slipped him an extra hashbrown with his daily breakfast at the diner, but what was her name? what does she look like?
he misses the scent of his laundry detergent, the smell that surrounds him when he puts on a wool sweater straight out of the dryer, but he cant for the life of him remember the name of it!
the worst part of his amnesia, the fact that he’s alone in space during this, is that there’s nothing to jog his memory. and of course, because he has spotty memory, Ryland Grace will forever live in fear of what he’s forgotten. there’s no way to know what he’s missing, not without a human by his side to remind him.
the ideal media diet for a child is books and music from at least fifty years ago so they are always out of touch with the references and allusions of their peer group
some fics really make me feel this deep in my heart man fanfics are so amazing. I love fanfics
(clearly insane) the thing about strattland in the book is that two things about book!grace are simultaneously true 1) stratt genuinely likes the guy and 2) he fundamentally doesn't see her as a person. he's goofy and clever and sassy and ridiculous and blunt in the way where she clearly enjoys his company, but he is also incurious about her interiority to the point of dehumanisation (comes with the avoidant tendencies).
"but biscia, isn't a man not treating a woman like a person a particularly loaded dynamic in terms of sexism, wouldn't this normally throw you off" you might say, and you'd be right. except the woman in question is eva stratt and eva stratt is fucking insane and has decided to sublimate her own humanity to turn her existence into the single-minded purpose of saving her species. so she keeps ryland grace around, because someone she cares about who also doesn't see her as a person makes for an excellent tool to consistently sandpaper off the edges of her own humanity. AND he acts as her personal science lapdog. it's genius. very efficient system. but watch out.
stratt wasn’t cursed to death, damned to die alone in space. her punishment is worse because it doesn’t end, her punishment is inflicted by her mind
when she goes outside and sees a wolf lurking in the darkness, or even worse, a fox sprinting across a field like a shooting star- she’ll remember
when her vehicle stops in traffic, and she looks out of the backseat window, she sees a bus full of children- she’ll remember
when she is let out for an hour to leave her cell, she’ll feel the fresh breeze, smell the scent of earth it carries, and as she bends down to grasp a couple blades of cold, moist grass- she’ll remember
worst of all, when she feels the warmth of the sun return, when the world settles with peace and the scientists of the world begin their studies, learning from the videos sent their way- she’ll remember.
stratt cant escape her actions, she cant apologize because given another chance, she would do it all over again. her punishment isn’t regret but the guilt that comes with the lack of such, and the burden her memory holds every day that something reminds her of the man she traded for survival
they throw stratt in jail for life but world renowned, white european political prisoners don't get the short end of the stick in terms of prison arrangements. she's not in some overcrowded unsanitary hole of a women's prison, she was the most politically powerful leader on earth for god's sake. she was put there by important people already in charge, people who would still want to keep in contact with her from time to time. no, she'd have her own nice, clean cell: a bed, a desk, her own bathroom. she'd be allowed phonecalls and letters and meetings, they probably wouldn't allow her unmonitored internet access but they would bring her newspapers and maybe even leave her a tv so she can watch the news.
but most importantly she would eat well. the food would be good. it wouldn't be anything restaurant grade, but it would be clearly something prepared for her. and she would look down at her plate and her brain would run leclerc's calculations for their global food resources and she would ask herself how many people in her world are going hungry because there's systems in place to keep people like her fed like this. and her throat would close around every bite.
i have something so much inappropriate to say, you know... should i?
