you know that dumbass Forbes article advocating for Amazon stores to replace public libraries? It was taken down cause the author got dragged so hard by like everyone who has ever entered a library in their life & now Forbes released a statement basically calling the author of the original op-ed “deeply misinformed” lmao

Don’t fuck with libraries.
You know, mabes we socialist types should proactively do something to help our local libraries before capitalists find ways of shutting them down for good. Some kind of mass fundraiser or something, I don’t know what. But they seem like the last holdout for people who believe that everyone has a right to resources, no questions asked.
For many people, the library is the one place they can access the internet, which may in turn be the only way they can apply for jobs or get schoolwork done.
Other technology is also available for use at a library, such as a copier or a printer (ours even has a 3D printer open to the public).
The library is a safe place to go if it’s raining or really cold outside.
Children are enabled to read more books than their allowance could ever possibly afford, and for kids from lower-income backgrounds, it might be their only access to books at all.
Lots of libraries provide classes that are needed in their community, whether it’s ESL or literacy or parenting or what have you. Free of charge.
You can even borrow movies or seasons of TV shows instead of springing for Netflix.
And there is no shame whatsoever in visiting one. There is no social stigma attached to the library, it’s for everyone, period.
Any librarians with ideas for how we could help keep them going?
Support the Library Defense Network! They’re a leftist org made up of library workers and they organize communities to prevent public library closures.

Some easy ways to support your libraries:
1) Use them. The more use they get, the more they can show how vital they are to the community and can use that data to request more funding/argue against cuts. Bear in mind that e-books have shit licencing because of the asshole publishers. Don’t let that stop you from using them, but if you want to show use with little impact on the library cost wise, go for the physical copy if you can. And check out what the American Library Association is doing to push back on some of the latest publisher BS.
2) Let your local elected officials know how valuable the libraries are to your community. They are the ones who tend to control the budget which directly affects how much goes to the libraries. They have a lot of vital resources they control and only so much money to spend, so the more they see the library being used and valued, the stronger the case is for investing in them long term.
3) If you can, support Friends of the Libraries groups. They often cover a lot of the programming (sometimes all, a lot of time there are limits on what municipal funds can be spent on). They also can help fill the gaps in leaner times.
4) Remind people that your tax dollars are going to fund the libraries! People like to grumble at how high taxes are, but if they use the library, it’s helpful to remind them that is one benefit they get for paying taxes. Even if they don’t, they are helping to support a vital community resource.

A victim literally escaped Jeffrey Dahmer’s apartment naked with a hole drilled in his head and unable to speak but police let Dahmer take him back to his apartment like everything was ok!
And I guess he doesn’t count as a serial killer but Eric Harris had already been making threats and harrassing students to an extreme degree before Columbine- police literally had a search warrant but they just never acted on it. If they had, they would have found the guns and pipe bombs and the shooting could have been easily prevented. They even tried to cover this up afterwards.
Serial killers and mass murders are usually not that smart, police have just historically refused to do their actual jobs.
