New fic - Living Rent-Free in His Head

Moriarty manages to swap bodies with Sherlock. Now Sherlock has to figure out not only how to get his body back, but also not get shot, blown up, or punched out by John in the process.

There’s a quality that certain books/movies/TV shows have that leads me to say, “Yeah, I can see people making fanfiction of that.” It’s something to do, I think, with how tight the story is, how much feels open-ended or like it could be elaborated on.

Something like Breaking Bad, for example, has low squiggability (that’s what I’m calling this quality). It’s tightly written, the characters are consistent, there’s little left to interpolate or extrapolate. Obviously, people DO write fanfic of Breaking Bad, but it still has a low squiggability score. Whereas something like Supernatural has a high squiggability score. Fantasy and science fiction often have high squiggability scores. This suggests squiggability could also be related to worldbuilding and potential for people to borrow a premise or setting.

And sometimes you’ll read or watch something and you’ll say, “Ah, low squiggability,” and then you’ll open tumblr and find out that everyone else seem to think its squiggability was very high indeed.

Leverage is a fun one because in my head it has pretty low squiggibility but nearly endless squiggibility when you add any other property to it and make a crossover

Oh I love this word, I've been trying to articulate this concept for a while.

Breaking Bad is like a porcelain doll. Beautiful, intricate, up on the shelf. For looking at and daydreaming but not to play with. (Fandom but not a lot of fanfic.)

Parks & Rec is like a plush doll. Soft, floppy, safe to go in the laundry. Fun to cuddle, good to sleep with but not play with. (Fandom but not a lot of fanfic.)

For a fanfic fandom you want something like a Barbie. Poseable joints, a wide selection of clothing, multiple dolls that you can smack together to make them kiss.

i remember having conversations about this back on LJ and i know i've had them here too--what makes a show fandom-worthy and i feel like we're always groping for the right language for the thing that people are trying to articulate here. i really like the doll analogy! it's a good one! and "squiggability" is such a good word--i think i've talked about it in terms of texture, like something can't be too smooth and streamlined. it's got to have something that will snag on the imagine-y bits of my mind.

what provides that texture can vary from fandom to fandom. some have worldbuilding that feels capacious and flexible, like a great place to play. some have characters who are very compelling despite us knowing little about them, providing great fodder for the invention of backstories. some have a plot that it's easy to imagine canon divergences for--if something went just sliiiightly differently, it would change everything. a really great fandom will have opportunities in all these categories.

overall, it has to hit a sweet spot of not too good (if it's too good, i feel like it's untouchable, like there's no space for me, like it doesn't need me) but also not too terrible (if it's too terrible, i simply won't care about it in the first place) on one axis and not too streamlined ("tightly written" as above, is a good way of phrasing this--again, i don't feel like my input is needed or even desired) but not too messy (to the point where there's no consistency, no essence at all) on the other axis.

Hi Steph, sorry to bother you. I’m looking for a fic and I wondered if you could help? All I remember is Sherlock overdosed(?) in a bathtub (at 221b, I think) and phones Mycroft and tells him the answers to a case he was on but Mycroft realises Sherlock’s done something and asks where he is and stuff. John was in the fic but I don’t remember what he did, all I remember was that scene. I’m pretty sure it was a relatively short fic but I’m not certain

Sherlock did not call Mycroft intending to tell him about the overdose, only to tell him the answers to the case he was on. Mycroft figures it out from how Sherlock’s speaking. I think the reason Sherlock didn’t call John was because it was post Mary’s death, possibly post canon, and John was still grieving and avoiding Sherlock. It might’ve been an accidental overdose or possibly not, but if it was accidental, Sherlock didnt particularly care if he lived. I’m still looking and I would really appreciate the help
