You were screwed. You were actually, completely, utterly, royally screwed. And your landlord was a total ass. Which is why you end up at the nurses station, trying to contain your tears as your shift comes to an end. Your best friend, Marcia, stands behind you, pacing.
"Tell me again what that creep said," she grits out.
"He told me that my rent is going up because it's an 'up-and-coming' neighbourhood and he can't afford to have me in that apartment if I wasn't willing to pay the new prices."
"That's absurd! And most definitely illegal!" Marcia exclaimed.
"I know, but he claimed he has the right because I had neglected to file maintenance requests to keep my apartment in proper shape, even though the only thing he could point out was a little chipped paint." You roll your eyes, "and that I had outstanding fees because I didn't pay for the ones I did file. Even though he told me I didn't need to, but that was before he tried to stick his tongue down my throat and I turned him down, so..."
"I'll egg his place, just say the word," she says so seriously you can't help the small laugh you let out.
Marcia puts a comforting hand on your shoulder, "hon, everything will work out. Worst case scenario you can stay on my couch for a few days."
"Yeah, I know. I'm just so stressed and I know I won't feel better until I find a place. It's just-" you let out a frustrated sigh. "Why is everything so expensive?! I can't afford anything on my own," you finish dejectedly.
"(Y/n), you know that if I had the space I would offer it to you in a heartbeat," Marcia says sadly.
"I know you would. It's okay, I'll figure something out," you sniff quietly.
Just then, Jack Abbot moves to the nurses station, handing over some papers. You would never admit it, but you were harbouring a bit of a crush on the fourth year med student.
You try to wipe the tears from your eyes before he can see, but he's quick to notice that your normally happy demeanour is off.
"Rough shift?" He asks gruffly.
"I mean, when is it not?" You joke half-heartedly.
He looks at you, waiting for you to continue. Sometimes you swear he must be a mind reader.
"No, it's not that. I won't-" you force your voice to remain steady. "I won't really have a place to live anymore. My landlord's kicking me out."
Jack's eyes narrow in concern. "What? Why?"
You sniffle and reply with, "it's silly" as Marcia says, "because he's an asshole!"
Robby comes to stand by Jack, "who's an asshole?" He wanted to make sure you were alright after seeing your sad expression in addition to hearing Marcia curse out a man (though that was not a rare occurrence).
"My landlord," you say dejectedly. "He's kicking me out by Friday, and I won't have a place to live."
Robby hums in concern.
Jack has been quietly fighting with himself. He has more than enough room in his two-bedroom apartment; but it's you! One of his best friends, his co-worker. You, who's the complete opposite of his grouchy self. He can't risk crossing the fragile boundary he's worked so hard to keep between you. He knows he wouldn't be able to hide his feelings being that close to you.
"I don't know what I'm going to do," you say through tears, cutting through his thoughts.
Jack can't stand to see you cry. Maybe that's why his mouth starts moving before his brain has a chance to catch up. "I mean...I have an extra room."
"Really?"
"My roommate moved out and I could use the rent money," he lies through his teeth.
You don't notice Robby's eyebrows shoot up to nearly his hairline or Marcia giving Jack a skeptical yet smug glance over.
"You really wouldn't mind?"
"Yeah, why not?" He shrugs.
"You don't have to Jack, I really wouldn't want to intrude," you say, searching his eyes.
Jack wants to say you could never intrude, in fact he wanted you in his space, his life even, always, but instead he lands on, "I really don't mind, sweetheart. You would be doing me a favour."
Marcia and Robby gawk at Jack, the med student famous for his short responses and the perpetually angry look on his face. But you're too distracted by him calling you sweetheart to notice their reactions.
"That is so sweet of you! I'll figure out a way to repay you, aside from rent of course," you jest.
Jack freezes, red blooming across his cheeks.
Scratching his neck, he states, "don't worry about it." You smile at him bashfully. Robby and Marcia share a knowing glance.
"I guess I'll start looking for movers then," you state.
Jack looks almost offended. He quickly shuts that idea down, "don't waste your money on that. Robby and I are off on Friday, we'll help you move."
Robby snaps his gaze to Jack, and then back to you, your soft eyes hopeful. "Happy to help," he concedes.
"I'm off Friday too, and you best believe I'll be there to see these two buffoons try to move your couch," Marcia quips.
Glaring at Marcia, Jack turns to you. He gently sweeps his thumb under your lash line, catching an unshed tear. "See? Everything will be alright."
His heart flutters as you smile up at him. He keeps moving his thumb across your cheekbone, almost instinctively.
The butterflies in your stomach come to life at his touch. You bring your hand to his and squeeze lightly.
He blushes even harder.
As his proposition sinks in, relief visibly washes over you. Overwhelmed with gratitude, you start to feel excited at the idea of moving in with Jack. "Thank you, you won't regret this! I promise I'm a great roommate, I bake and I am pretty tidy, and you won't be bothered by my work schedule, obviously. This will be perfect! I mean, you'll hardly notice I'm there."
Jack highly doubted that. Considering his heart feels like it wants to beat out of his chest whenever you are in a ten mile radius, he's not entirely convinced that living in the same space won't send him into cardiac arrest. What has he done?
———
That weekend, you began to move your stuff into Jack's place. You stood outside the brick building, staring up at your new apartment.
"You ready to live with Jack?" Marcia says, leaning against your packed car and attached trailer.
"I guess so," you reply. "Not like I have any other choice." She shoots you a knowing look.
"I'm calling it now. You're going to be boinking by the end of the month."
You laugh, "first of all, I can't believe you just said boinking. Secondly, we're just friends, he doesn't like me like that."
She scoffs, "alright, if you say so. But I see boinking in your future."
"Stop using that word," you say, tilting your head back with a groan.
"It's the only appropriate word to describe sex when it's between two of your friends and co-workers," she asserts.
You shake your head and make your way to the door, pressing the intercom.
"Hello?" Jack's voice cuts through the speaker.
"It's me and Marcia."
"C'mon up," he buzzes you in, and the lock on the door clicks open, inviting you in to your new home.
———
About 10 minutes before you and Marcia got there, Robby arrives to find Jack frantically cleaning his place.
"Did your roommate leave your place a mess?" Robby smirks, smug tone in place.
"Shut up and grab that garbage bag, would you?" Jack grumbles.
Robby moves to pick up the bag and hands it to his friend.
"So, what are you going to do with the rent money she gives you anyways? Because I don't think she'll react well when she finds out you don't need it."
Jack pauses his cleaning and says quietly, "I'll find a way to give it back to her each month without her knowing."
Robby gives him an unconvinced look.
Jack knows he's right, you would be upset if you found out he lied about needing the money. You're stubborn and he doesn't want you to feel like he is giving you special treatment, so he told a little white lie about having his roommate move out. In reality, after receiving his purple heart for losing his leg in the military, the government covers his rent. And he's never had a roommate.
Robby continues his teasing, "now I'm almost offended that you didn't accept my offer to room together."
"I didn't need a roommate," he retorts.
"I know, but I thought you could use the company." His eyes light up with glee. After your first shift, some flirting with you, and a few more beers, Jack had been a little too forthcoming with Robby about his feelings for you. And Robby was not letting him live it down, "but clearly it was not my company you were wanting." Jack glares at him.
Before he can respond, the intercom buzzes. Jack's shoulders tense as he walks towards his door, and he tentatively says, "Hello?" Robby watches in amusement as Jack's face lights up at the sound of your voice. He buzzes you in and sends Robby a nervous look.
Oh his friend is down bad.
———
"To the right- no, the right!"
"I am moving to the right!" Robby says, exasperated.
Jack mutters something under his breath at the other end of your couch.
You and Marcia are watching the two men try to maneuver the piece of furniture up the stairs, unsuccessfully, you might add.
"This is even better than I thought it would be," she says under her breath. "You boys are doing great!" She yells to them.
"Yeah whatever. You could come help us you know," Jack growls.
"Awe but you're making it look so easy," Marcia says sweetly.
You and Marcia chuckle at the nearly identical annoyed looks on Jack and Robby's faces.
"It's not too late to call the movers," you offer.
"No, we've got it," Jack grunts, pushing the couch harder.
After a few more attempts (and curse words), Jack and Robby finally manage to get the couch upstairs and into the apartment.
They are both red and sweaty as they flop onto the cushions of the newest addition to the room.
"Amazing! Now we've only got my dresser and piano!" You say excitedly.
Jack's eyes go wide as saucers and Robby looks like he might cry.
"Kidding," you laugh.
"You're so mean," Jack grumbles, but smiles nonetheless.
———
After unpacking most of your boxes, Robby walks into the living area carrying a box that reads "Bedroom*", handing it to Jack. A sense of dread floods you as you read the specially marked cardboard. You practically lunge at him, yelping out "I'll take that!"
Jack gives you a confused look as you frantically try to grab at the box in his arms, but he's quick to turn away with a grin. "Why? What's in here? Some dirty novels or something?"
"Nope, nothing! I can just carry that-" your protest is cut off by him opening the lid. He reaches in, teasingly he says, "don't worry, I would never judge your reading choices..." but the words die on his tongue as he touches something soft. Gingerly, he pulls out a lacy brassiere. Your face turns the same deep shade of red as the bra currently in Jack's hand.
The confident smirk on Jack's face slowly morphs into a slack-jawed expression. He looks at you with an unreadable emotion in his eyes. You snatch the garment back and shove it back into the box. You blush furiously, grabbing the box from Jack. As you scurry to your room, you thank whatever deity was watching that he didn't find your vibrator.
Jack stands there dumbfounded. His heart is most definitely going to explode with you living here.

It was your first day at The Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center. New scrubs, new city, new everything, and you were determined to make the most of it. It was your third year of med school and you were excited to start your new position.
You walked through the doors of the hospital, the scent of antiseptic, sweat, and the faint smell of blood hitting your nose. You brush past the hoards of ill and injured patients in the waiting area, making your way to the reception.
"Hi there, I'm (y/n). Third year med student, today is my first day," you smile politely at the secretary.
She looks up and briefly returns your smile. "Just head through the door on your right."
"Thanks!" You say brightly, weaving through the crowd and the door clicks open. You push through into the chaos of the emergency department: There are nurses rushing by, doctors yelling orders, machines beeping, and you've never been more terrified and thrilled all at once.
You make your way towards the central nurses station. A blonde woman, who doesn't look much older than you smiles, "ah yes, new blood today."
You smile and respond with a small wave and a timid "hi."
She laughs at your meek response. Putting a hand on your shoulder, she begins to guide you to some of the other staff, "I'm Dana. No need to be so shy hun, we don't bite - well most of us. Robinavitch! Over here!"
At her words, a tall doctor lifts his head towards the nurse's voice. He walks over to meet you, sticking out his hand. "Hey, I'm Michael. R2." You shake his hand and tell them both your name and that you're a third year med student.
"No one calls him Micheal, it's either Robby or Robinavitch," Dana tells you with a smirk.
Robby glares at her playfully.
"Am I missing all the fun?" A woman says as she approaches.
"No, 'course not! Fun doesn't start without you, Marcia," Dana pats your shoulders.
Marcia looks you up and down. "Wait, let me guess. Third year med student...hmm...from a small town out west...currently attends Pitt School of Medicine...and...is allergic to wheat."
Your jaw drops. She starts laughing, "easy new girl. I'm messing with you, I read your file."
You let out a relieved laugh at that, thankful she's not some psychic or something.
Suddenly, you feel a presence behind you. The hairs on your neck raise before you even hear the gruff words.
"Scaring the new kid, are we Marcia?"
You turn and meet a pair of hazel eyes, narrowed curiously. The man is tall and strong, his arms crossed over his chest. Even through the long sleeves and scrubs, you can tell he's muscular. Your eyes rake over his body, from his curly hair to his large chest, down to his feet, angled slightly unevenly. You immediately fight down the weird urge to bite one of his biceps. What is wrong with you? Pull it together.
"I thought you had a rule about fraternizing with co-workers Abbot? As in you don't do it," Marcia drawled.
"Had to be polite and introduce myself," the man turns to you. "Jack Abbot."
You smile and tell him your name.
Marcia scoffs, "you did, did you? Because I seem to remember you not talking to me the first three months I was here." Dana and Robby laugh.
"Yeah, you didn't even learn my name until two months in. You just called me 'tall resident'," Robby recalled.
"Well you still responded." Jack countered.
You giggle and Jack looks at you. Something is his chest warms at the sound.
Suddenly the attending, Dr. Adamson, calls your impromptu group's attention. Everyone turns their gaze towards the doctor, except Jack. He can't seem to take his eyes off of you.
———
By the end of the day, your scrubs are wrinkled, you have flyaways sticking out every which way, and you are sure there are bags under your eyes, but you are feeling very content. A wave of pride washes over you while you sit charting.
You're so caught up in your moment, you don't notice Jack walking over to you. "What's got you smiling?" He asks, eyebrow quirked.
"Oh, hi," you say. "Nothing, just happy."
Jack looks at you but doesn't say anything. He leans against the counter and hums, "come help me wrap up this case and then we can get out of here."
You step away from the desk and follow Jack to the patient's room. He briefs you outside the door. Five year-old boy, stomach pain, vomiting, but no other symptoms.
You step in and see a little boy lying on the bed. Dana is checking some equipment above his head and an older woman, you assume is his mother, sits beside him. As you and Jack enter, she looks up anxiously at you both.
"Hi, I'm Student Doctor Abbot and this is Student Doctor (Y/l/n). We're here to help you feel better, Thomas."
You walk over to the side of the bed and pull up a stool. Taking a seat next to the boy, you ask him what his symptoms are.
"I threw up," he tells you.
You nod, "that's not very fun." He shakes his head.
"Anything else?" You nudge.
"My tummy really hurts."
"Well we're going to help with that. I think we need to draw some blood from your arm to run a some tests."
"I don't like needles," Thomas whimpers.
"I know, me neither. But why doesn't your mom hold your hand and the Nurse Dana will be really quick, I promise," she smiles at the boy.
He nods.
You lean in and whisper, "and we have a little rule here at the hospital."
He leans in closer.
"All brave kids have to get a sticker. Why don't you help me pick one out?" You say as you pull out a pack of animal stickers from your pocket. Dana gets to work on his other arm as you distract him.
Jack watches attentively as you talk to Thomas. You are so gentle and warm, he can see the tension ease slightly in the boy's mom. He knows he's a good doctor, but bedside manner has never been his strong suit. Yet here you are, so naturally caring and soft. He feels the earlier feeling in his chest again.
———
As the clock ticks closer to 7:00pm, you and Jack leave the room to do hand off to the night shift. At your locker, Robby walks over to you. "Some of us are going to grab a beer, it's kind of a tradition. You should come with us."
"I'd love that!" You smile.
Robby turns to Jack and claps him on the back. "See you tomorrow, brother."
"I'll come with you guys. For a beer," he mutters.
Robby gives him a look of confusion. "You never-"
"Well I'm coming tonight," Jack cuts him off.
Robby nods, smirking slightly, "okay then. To the park."
Marcia and Dana catch up with you on your way out, and you all make your way to the park. There are already some other nurses and doctors waiting.
Despite being new, you don't feel left out. Everyone is kind and asks you about yourself and how your first shift went.
Jack watches from the edge of the group, sipping his beer silently. He isn't a huge fan of group gatherings. He notices how everyone seems to warm up to you immediately, how easily you fit into the group dynamic.
One of the nurses turns to ask about his weekend plans, and he grumbles out a "nothing." The nurse cocks his head at the cold response and walks away not long after.
Robby watches the interaction and saunters over to him. "Ah, glad to see you're back to your normal grumpy self. I was a bit worried you were on drugs or something."
Jack shifts but doesn't respond and looks over at you. Robby follows his gaze.
"You like her, don't you?" Robby questions.
"No," Jack says quickly.
