It’s time for a career change
Let me start with a quote: “Education is not preparation for life, education is life itself”. It’s a powerful sentence, isn’t it?
I believe in education, no matter your age or your personal circumstances. I still remember, one of my tutors in my university, her story had a massive impact on me. No wonder, why I still remember her today.
She was a primary school teacher until the age of 40. She was married with 3 children. At the time of writing, we are expecting our first child with my partner, therefore I cannot say that I know exactly how busy her life was, but shortly I will find it out first-hand. However, if you have children, you know exactly what is like.
So, she thought, she was not happy with what she was doing and decided to change her life. She was so dedicated, she was awarded a master's degree in the next 3 years. By the time she reached 50, she had completed her PhD as well. When I got to know her story, I thought anything is possible if you put yourself on the right track. She was an excellent tutor, I cannot thank her enough.
As the world is changing, online education has become more common. Particularly, during the Covid 19 pandemic, lockdowns and furloughs, possibly online courses have become very popular.
50 years ago, if you skipped school, you can have been losing all your chances to study or take classes. If you hadn’t completed college by age of 25, you would have a tough life on the jobs market. Nowadays, luckily it’s nothing like this anymore.
No matter where you live, the internet has opened the door for you. Yes, of course, most courses are available in English only, therefore native English speakers are in a better position, but learning English has become just as common as online studies.
You would say, I can’t afford it. Really? Is that your explanation or excuse why you are still at the job you can’t stand, pays rubbish, and treats you bad?
Are you aware, that there are nearly 1200 FREE courses available at Coursera? I am sure, your interest would fit in one of those 1200 courses.
You are saying, I don’t have time. I can get this in two ways. Either, you think you are too old- spoiler alert- I am telling you, you are not too old for anything. Or, simply, you cannot fit this into your busy schedule. ( Do you remember my formal tutor and her busy schedule? Any more excuses of yours?)
Did you know, that most of the courses can be completed within 4–10 weeks, however, there is no time limit which you have to finish your course.
I can literally hear you saying that, I am feeling lost, I do not know what to learn.
Why are you not giving yourself a shot, it’s literally free to register at Coursera, you have nothing to lose.
Courses, which would lead you to a brand new world in terms of career opportunities are in business, data science, programming, coding, social sciences, art and design, engineering, just to mention a few subjects you can choose from.
We all have heard that the age of 40 is the new 20, I would say, education is the new 20, it would give you the chance to become whoever you want to be.
Furthermore, if you have young or even teenage children, why not try to learn something together online. This company provides coding courses for 8–18-year-old children. Of course, these are child education courses, but as it’s never too late to learn something new, it’s never too early to start learning.
