“How could i forget? at least it keeps me busy.” She offered with a small smile, “How are you enjoying the partying? Anywhere else you’d rather be?”
The princess gave the young woman a once over, unable to place her among one of the royal families. That meant very little though, it seemed as though anyone with the smallest connection had ended up in the palace. “The party is adequate enough,” she replied, tactfully. “It’ll do for now.”
“i do not know what you are attempting to accomplish with your words, your highness,” gabriel said frankly. “i apologize if i speak out of turn, but a birthday is not the place for it.”
“Yes, Mr. Ruiz, that much is quite obvious,” she replied, her countenance held her usual passive expression. “Do I strike you as someone who cares for unrequested opinions and diplomatic apologies?”
gabe gave her a look. “what else do you want me to say? we are all here by the grace of her majesty the queen. it might not be wise to criticize her granddaughter.”
“You need to have your ears cleaned if you believe that was a critique of Mignonette,” she chastised, finally looking over at the Mexican adviser. God, men.
gabriel managed to make his face neutral as much as possible. “i do not believe that the princess sees it that way. she is simply doing her duty, as are the rest of us.”
“Right, of course,” the princess responded, condescension saturating her words.
beatrice rose her eyes as she took a large gulp of her champagne, once the glass was half full she looked to the other girl. she had been trying to think of something to say, but beatrice was truly an awkward princess. “maybe that is why she has not yet picked someone? she’s buying time to change the law, or something.” and then the glass was once again to her lips.
Iimaan pursed her lips in thought. “If that is the case then she’s smarter than she’s given credit for,” the older woman conceded, grabbing her own champagne glass from a passing tray. “We’ll just have to wait and see how this plays out.”
“Isn’t it always something like that? If ruling wasn’t as issue it would be ‘when are you getting married? When are you having kids?’“ Blair added on absentmindedly. She’s heard the same speech from her own parents, her only reason ever being the classic ‘I don’t know.’
“No, royal parents don’t ask anything. You’re simply informed. ‘This is whom you’re marrying and this is why.’, ‘Children are expected within two years of your union. What reason do you have to wait?’” The princess corrected with unmistakable unenthusiasm.
“Imagine celebrating a quarter century by entertaining dignitaries whom are only present to marry you because your own parliament doesn’t find you worthy enough to rule alone,” the princess mused, watching the patrons of the room make small talk.
“When necessary, they serve their purpose. Sure, it may seem unethical to most but you have to remember marriage was originally just a business deal. Two families pooling their resources. Love didn’t have anything to do with it.”
“ doesn’t this feel like college all over again? ” a glass of wine in hand, the cordial mask she’d been wearing all day finally falls in the presence of iimaan. ” introducing ourselves, talking to people, pretending we care about what some old english duke has to say. ”
Iimaan chuckled, undoing the tie of her guntiino as she relaxed back into the couch. “This is worst than college,” she replied, shaking her head in disagreement. “I offend someone here and the world is ending. In college I would have just gotten kicked out of class.”
perched on a chair and table at the royal garden perimeter, wine bottle in hand, chelsea poured herself a generous glass. with everyone arrived and settling, it was time to unwind – maybe, if she was lucky ( if she would let herself ). she waved over a vaguely familiar face, though whether the recognition was from her mountain of files or a bona fide conversation, she couldn’t be sure.
“would you join me? i feel terribly sad sitting alone, although i’ll warn you: i’m not much of a conversationalist when it comes to politics.”
Iimaan raised an eyebrow, moving towards the queen’s assistant. It was odd to find the woman out here with all the commotion within the palace walls. Usually, she was never very far from Clarisse’s side. Why she was outside hiding in the garden was none of the princess’ business. “Interesting choice of occupation, then, no?”
⋆ ° ⟡ ( NAFESSA WILLIAMS, thirty, cis female, she/her ) has IIMAAN ABDULLAHI, the PRINCESS from SOMALIA arrived yet? i heard they can be quite UNFORGIVING, but also PRAGMATIC. there’s rumours they’ve come to genovia for TO GARNER GOOD FAVOR AND BUILD CONNECTIONS WITH OTHER COUNTRIES, but you never know. JOJOBA OIL, WATER DROPLETS ON DARK SKIN, AND THE SOUND OF LOUBOUTINS ON TILE FLOORS always remind me of them.
