jackie’s “we’re still a team” in episode 1, met with nat slamming her locker and stomping away, and nat’s “we’re supposed to be a team” in episode 4, met with travis’ immediate dismissal, really highlight for me that what makes jackie and nat different is also what makes them the same, at least in terms of how they function as leaders in the group. because what jackie says uses definitive language, but she says it quietly, hesitatingly, as if she doesn’t know what else to say other than the one thing she knows to be true, even if she’s aware the others are losing faith in or disregarding it. what nat says, on the other hand, uses more flexible language, asserting this is the way things should be, though she is not necessarily sure this is how they are, but the way she says it is firm and definitive. the reason both of these statements, regardless of their inverted delivery and language, are met with the same frustration and dismissal from their receivers is because, where jackie tries her hardest to be optimistic and nat is an aggressive realist, both of them are united by the fact that their actions do not match their words, that there is an underlying layer of insecurity to what they’re saying, and if they cannot respect themselves enough to be confident in themselves, why should somebody else respect them enough to listen?

one thing no one will ever get away from me are lottienat and hannigram parallels, especially between these scenes

both lottie and hannibal feeling rejected after being completely open and vulnerable, believing the person they loved would have understood them.

the same darkness that resides in hannibal is in will too, and they both know that, but will still refused to accept it until it was too late.

hannibal calls being vulnerable to will a "gift", and i think that in the same way we can call the wilderness in yj a gift from lottie to nat.

we know from the series that both had shitty home lives, and based on the few pre-crash scenes, we can assume that they were close, and, allow me to be greedy, that maybe they sought comfort from each other due to their similarities.

so what if lottie tried to make the wilderness a home for both her and nat? away from the prejudices, away from a society they don't fit in, where they can be open and vulnerable.

this makes even more sense if you interpret lottie saying "we're safer here" referencing to "we" as just her and nat, not all of the yellowjackets; as someone here on tumblr pointed out long ago.

another parallel between these scenes that scratches my brain is their context: both are set when there's something that threatens this offered vulnerability. in hannibal it's the trap set to catch him, in yellowjackets is the possibility of going back in civilisation. and if the threats win, hannibal and lottie will be controlled and forced to suppress their true nature.

also, it's worth noticing how both will and nat realize after these events that they're in the same shit as hannibal and lottie. will gradually learns to embrace his darkness throughout season 3, while in the adult tl nat admits that they brought the wilderness back with them in season 2.

Haymitch Became Everlark’s Secondary Dad and Would Knock the Teeth out of Anybody Who Claims He Doesn’t Care About Peeta.

“Several sets of arms would embrace me. But in the end, the only person I truly want to comfort me is Haymitch, because he loves Peeta, too” (Mockingjay, pg. 163).

“I didn’t want to let them in, her and Peeta. But the walls of a person’s heart are not impregnable. Not if they have ever known love” (SOTR, Epilogue).

I find it means just as much, if not more, that Haymitch grew to love Peeta just as much as Katniss, as it was formed without any pre-conceived connections. In fact, it is said multiple times that he actually prefers Peeta’s company and “likes him better” (he likes them the same amount, but simply has different, difficult to compare dynamics - tailored to their personalities - with both of them).

In the case of Haymitch “choosing” Katniss over Peeta, do not forget that Peeta explicitly communicated to him that he wanted him to as well. Nor should you forget how he was put under pressure by multiple other parties to repeat that decision the second time around, and at the last second after long hoping he could get them both out.

But regardless, I don’t want to supply the opposite side of the spectrum and expand a fan-made competition. I know I post disproportionately about Peeta when covering Everlark as individuals, but that is simply to balance out the more popular rhetoric that I find to be unfaithful to the text. They are a package deal in Haymitch’s mind. He loves his family equally and would never ponder about who ranks higher. Just let the man rest with his kids and his geese.

I really wish they would’ve cast younger (looking) actors in the Hunger Games movies to drive home the point that they are sending children to kill each other but only after they have prettified, sexualised, and used them up in their entertainment machine. Especially for the flashback when Peeta gives Katniss the bread, I would’ve like to the see the horrendous reality of the Capitol letting children starve to death.
