Summary: Y/N Y/L/N has everything: a wealthy family, a famous last name, and the most eligible bachelor in the wizarding community as her soon to be husband. What happens when she’s reunited with a forbidden friend from the past?
The night of the end of the year ball rolled around, and Y/N was miserable. She had gotten ready with Cynthia, Dawn, and Ellie, and the four girls had planned to go to the ball as a group but mere minutes after arriving, Cynthia and Dawn left Y/N and Ellie alone at the punch bowl to go dance with some stuck-up boys from their house. Y/N tried to scope out the room for places to sneak off with the marauders before they set their plans into motion, but Ellie caught her and had other thoughts. “I think I saw Sirius at the back of the dance floor. By the piano,”
she offered quietly. “Huh?” Y/N whipped her head to look at Ellie. “I assumed you
we’re looking for him?” she offered. “Oh!” Y/N prayed her makeup was heavy enough to hide her blush, “No, actually I was just looking at the decorations. They did a phenomenal job,” Y/N smiled. “Right,” Ellie laughed. “Come on, let’s go dance. Unless you’d like to admire the decor more,” She smirked, grabbing Y/N’s hand and pulling her toward the dance floor.
The two girls danced for a while, and Y/N almost forgot how much she hated events like this-Ellie was so much more fun to be around without Dawn and Cynthia breathing down her neck, and Y/N could understand why. After a few songs, Y/N felt a tap on her shoulder and was surprised to find Sirius. She looked around for Cynthia and Dawn but couldn’t spot them. “Um hey, Sirius what’s up?” She asked nervously, looking between Ellie and Sirius, but Sirius just smiled at Ellie, “Mind if I borrow your friend for a few minutes?” Y/N wasn’t sure how she expected Ellie to respond, but she wasn’t expecting
her to grin and give Y/N a little shove towards Sirius. “Go,” Ellie said, “I won’t tell.” Y/N didn’t know why, but she believed her. She reached out and squeezed Ellie’s hand. “Thank you, you’re the best. I’ll find you in a few minutes… and… don’t drink anymore punch,” Y/N said, earning an amused yet confused look from Ellie as she slipped away with Sirius.
Sirius and Y/N made their way through the crowd to the very back of the room, where large curtains hung over floor to ceiling windows. The pair slipped behind the curtains to find the rest of the marauders and Lily waiting for them. “Oh, you all look so lovely!” Y/N exclaimed, greeting everyone with small hugs. “Whatever you say, Princess Y/N,” Lily laughed, gesturing to Y/N’s glamorous dress. “What, this old thing?” Y/N joked. The six teenagers danced behind the curtain for a few songs, laughing and enjoying each others’ company for a bit before James stepped up. “Who’s ready to raise some hell?” he grinned. “You lot go on. I’ll step out after you,” Y/N encouraged them all. Everyone said goodbye to Y/N and made their way out from the curtain except Sirius, who lingered behind with her.
“You looked like you were having fun with Ellie, why don’t you want to go back?” he asked as the band finished the upbeat song they were playing. “I just hate these things. The closer it gets to the wedding, the more I resent them… I really need to get my shit together, since I’ll be attending them for the rest of my life,” Y/N looked like she might be ill, and the band started up a slow, romantic tune. “C’mere,” Sirius pulled Y/N into him, finding her hands with his own and placing them around his neck before wrapping his arms around her waist and leading her into a slow sway. He was afraid if he opened his mouth to speak, all of his feelings would come flooding out, so he just held her close to him as they danced to the music, hidden from everyone else. Y/N laid her head on his chest and reveled in the steady thump thump of his heartbeat. After a few minutes, she lifted her head to look at him, and as soon as he met her gaze, they each started to lean in, eyes fluttering closed. “Sirius…” Y/N murmured. They were so close, but an outburst of loud laughter and the abrupt stop of the music shocked them apart. “Sounds like Prongs didn’t wait for me,” Sirius said as he sheepishly stepped back. “Hm,” Y/N hummed, as if still in a daze. She shook her head and snapped herself out of it. “Well I suppose we better get back out there to witness the merriment,” she told him. Sirius extended his hand to reach for her but thought better of it at the last minute and gently took her hand in his instead. “I’ll see you soon,” was all he said. With a squeeze of her hand, he slipped out of the curtain.

Over the next few days, Y/N really had to steel herself. You’re going to marry Peter Williams and everything is going to be fine, became her mantra. She repeated it to herself over and over, hoping to bring herself some peace, but it never came. With one week of school left, Y/N found herself
dreading the end of the school year, the end of her secret life. An idea formed in her mind halfway through her second class and she let it ruminate through the rest of the day, running through ways she could make it happen. By the time night fell, Y/N could hardly wait for her dorm mates to fall asleep and as soon as Y/N was sure her coast was clear, she rocketed out of her bed and up to the marauders’ room in Gryffindor Tower.
When she arrived, Lily was still absent from the Marauders’ dorm, so Y/N took a seat next to Sirius on his bed after greeting the boys. James and Remus seemed to pick up in the middle of a debate that Y/N assumed she had interrupted with her arrival. Peter went back to the book he was reading and Y/N worried away at her bottom lip. “Something on your mind, love?” Sirius asked her quietly. “Mhm,” she only hummed and nodded. “D’you wanna talk about it?” he prompted. “Not without Lily,” Y/N shook her head and went back to gnawing away at her lip. After what felt like hours but couldn’t have been more than 8 minutes, Lily arrived and plopped down in James’s bed after greeting everyone. “Alright, we’re all here, Y/N/N, the floor is yours,” Sirius gestured toward the middle of the room as if it were a stage.
“Hello all, thanks for letting me round everyone up in here,” Y/N announced, standing up from her spot on Sirius’s bed. “Um, the school year is ending pretty soon and I doubt we’ll be seeing much of each other because of our different, um, circles,” she said, “But I was really hoping that maybe you guys would like to come to my wedding? It would mean a lot to have some friendly faces there on such a… a big day,” Y/N looked around the room at everyone’s stunned faces. “You want us at- at your wedding?” Lily asked, obviously caught off guard. All of the marauders knew how Sirius felt about Y/N. Lily thought everyone knew, but apparently Y/N didn’t. “How-how would we even get in? Surely your parents-“ Remus started but Y/N cut him off. “I have a plan, actually! Our house elf, Mimkey will be in charge of the guest list, so I imagine if I just give her all of your names, you’ll be on the list and can just blend in with the crowd,” Y/N smiled at them but wrung her hands nervously. “Well, that does solve that issue, I reckon. But I doubt any of us have anything to wear…” Remus spoke up again, already coming up with ways to get out of this for Sirius’s sake. “Oi, Sirius does! He bought that tux last summer!” James spoke up.
“Remember, he bought it before he snuck into Y/N’s engagement party! I couldn’t believe he actually put on that monkey suit!” James slapped his knee as he laughed, and everyone laughed along with him except for Y/N. “What do you mean, Sirius snuck into the party? I thought he came with his family?” Y/N asked and turned to Sirius. “You said you came with your family?” it came out as a question and she stared at him, doe-eyed. “Well, actually I said that you invited the Black family… But I was already living with Prongs at that point. I heard about the engagement party from Ellie before the school year ended,” Sirius admitted. The marauders looked silently between the pair as Y/N straightened her posture and took a shaky breath. “Sirius, can I please speak to you privately, in the common room?” she asked, her voice firm but barely above a whisper.
Sirius followed her silently out of the marauder’s room and up to the common room. This was his chance, this was when he needed to come clean about his feelings. Sirius had always loved Y/N, but the past school year with her, he had fallen so deeply, he couldn’t let her go on without knowing how he felt. When they arrived to the common room, neither of them took a seat, they just stood opposite one another and stared at each other silently for a few moments.
Y/N’s eyes brimmed with tears threatening to spill over and her voice was firm as she spoke in a low voice, “Sirius, why did you come to my engagement party?” Her eyes bore into him and Sirius forced his eyes to stay on hers. “I… I had to know if you were really one of them or if… or if you were still there, and Y/N/N, you were. You were still there and I-Godric, I couldn’t let you trap yourself in that life. I… I love you, Y/N and I always have,” Sirius told her honestly, eyes never leaving hers. Y/N’s eyes closed and her tears started to fall. “Sirius,” She spoke with her eyes still closed, “you know that-“ Y/N’s voice broke and she took a breath to compose herself. “You know that I have to marry Peter,” She whispered, “Sirius, I have to do this.” Sirius shook his head, he couldn’t believe it, he wouldn’t believe there was no way out.
“But what if you didn’t,” Sirius pleaded. “There has to be something we could do, or something you could say-“ He tried but Y/N cut him off, anger rising in her now, “There is nothing, Sirius! This is what my family expects of me and this is what I have to do! It’s always been this way, and you’ve known that! How could you tell me that? How could you tell me you love me when you know that I’m getting married to someone else?” she yelled, unaware of the marauders now hiding in the stairwell to eavesdrop. “Because you need to know!” Sirius hollered back, his own frustration growing, “And because that marriage isn’t what you want!” “It’s not about what I want!” Y/N shouted back. “None of this is about me, this is about my family, Sirius!”
“It’s your bloody wedding! It’s the rest of your life, of course it’s about you!” Sirius threw his hands up in exasperation and took several steps to close the distance between them, placing his hands on Y/N’s shoulders. “Y/N this is your life, and I know that this is what you want, right here,” he said softly, brushing a strand of hair from her face. A single tear shed from Y/N’s eyes as she shook her head. “I’m sorry, but I can’t. I have to marry him,” she closed her eyes and rested her forehead against Sirius’s for a few moments before silently pulling away and leaving the common room without looking back. Sirius stared after her in defeat until the silence was broken by James speaking up. “That’s a tough break, mate. Anything we can do?” James offered, revealing himself and the other marauders at the top of the stairs. Sirius shook his head. “No, she’s made her choice,” he sighed, running a defeated hand through his hair.
*
“I just thought she’d choose me,” Sirius admitted as the marauders sat silently in their dorm. Nobody knew what to say, so Lily put a comforting hand on his arm. “I thought I made her happy enough these past few months that she’d see how great things are away from that life,” Sirius’s shoulders slumped. “Well that’s her loss then, right? She can go be snotty and rich by herself, good riddance!” Peter declared but Sirius shook his head. “Wormtail, she’s not snotty and we’re not leaving her by herself. We’re going to that wedding,” Sirius told everyone. “Sirius, you can’t do anything rash,” Lily warned. “I’m not trying to do anything rash, Evans,” Sirius replied, annoyed. “She’s our friend and she wants us there. We’re going and that’s the end of it,” Sirius decided. He would speak to her in the morning and make sure they were still invited.
The next morning came and when Sirius spotted Y/N in the great hall, he made a beeline for her. “Hey, can we uh, can we have breakfast in the forest?” he asked, a bit nervous of her answer. But Y/N just nodded and packed up her food before leading Sirius out of the great hall. When they arrived to their spot in forest, Sirius spoke up, “Look, I just wanted to apologize for last night. What I said was out of line, and I’m sorry. We would all love to come to your wedding, if you’ll have us,” Sirius offered his hand out for Y/N. Y/N reached to put her hand in his and then pulled it away, “You’re not going to do anything stupid, are you?” She asked with a brow raised. “This will be the first and only time I banish stupidity from my daily routine,” Sirius grinned, hand still extended. Y/N hesitated, and then smiled before placing her hand in his. Sirius immediately used their linked hands to pull her into a hug. “We’re always gonna be here for you,” he mumbled into her hair, and Y/N squeezed him tighter in response.
*
The last day of school finally arrived and it happened in a whirlwind. Y/N barely even got to say goodbye to the Marauders and Lily before she was whisked off to the train, where her dorm mates flooded into her cart to hound her with questions about the wedding. She mindlessly answered their queries while her thoughts stayed on Sirius and the half goodbye she got to say to him. She hoped she would have time to speak with him at the wedding. She didn’t know how on earth she would pull that off, but she couldn’t stand to think that the last time she talked to him would be just “Goodbye” and a wave. The last time, she thought to herself as she stepped off the train, her stomach turning sour at the thought. “Darling, you look green, was something wrong on the train?” Y/M/N asked as she spotted her daughter in the crowd at King’s Cross. “Oh, um, I guess I’m just trying to process that’s the last time I’ll be at school,” Y/N lied, her stomach churning even worse. “Now your life can begin!” Her mother stated cheerily, but Y/N felt like she had just placed a curse on her. “Right,” Y/N swallowed solemnly.
*
As soon as they’re arrived home, Y/N went straight to her room to get Millie and Desdemona settled in before she started unpacking. She quietly went over the rules with Millie and gave her extra woodlice as a treat and then opened her trunk and started unloading her clothes. After putting a few items away, she reached in and pulled out a flannel shirt- a flannel shirt that had most definitely belonged to Sirius. She felt her heart swell at the sight of it before tears started to blur her vision. She took several deep breaths to try to steady herself, but the tears just kept falling, one after another. She worried for a moment that one of her parents might come in and she would have to explain why she was crying over a shirt that obviously wasn’t hers, but then the realization hit her that of course they wouldn’t just show up to check on her- when had they ever shown any interest in her or how she was feeling? The more she thought about it, she realized how little interest they had shown in her over the course of her whole life. She had just finished her final year of school and her mother had barely even asked her about it on their way back home. Her father hadn’t even bothered to greet her yet. Her tears kept falling, starting to feel hot on her face as her sadness mixed with anger. Not once have they ever cared to ask about me. What I learned at school, what I like, how I’m feeling… I am giving up my whole life to spare a relationship with people who don’t even care to know me, she thought to herself. A deep pit formed in her stomach as she began to wonder is she was really making the right decision. Her fingers clutched Sirius’s shirt like a vice as she wept harder.
“For truth or dare, of course,” James waggled his eyebrows. Sirius tore his eyes away from Y/N at this. “Truth or dare?” he asked James. James had a twinkle in his eye that Sirius recognized as mischief; he hoped Y/N hadn’t noticed. “What are we, children?” Sirius raised a brow. “Yes, actually, we are. We’re teenagers and we’re playing truth or dare. Drink up, Y/N/N,” James grinned determined to set his plan into motion. Y/N took the two shots like a champion before handing the glasses back for James. “Lighten up, Sirius, I don’t mind. It’s just a game, right?” Y/N tried to convince him. Everyone joined in agreement. “Alright, alright. Everyone sit in a circle,” Sirius scooted over to make room for Y/N.
“I’ll ask first,” Lily declared once everyone was settled. “Remus, truth or dare?” “Dare, of course,” Remus smiled confidently. “I dare you to pick someone to style your hair, any way they want to,” Lily told him. Remus pondered in answer while he looked around the room and finally settled on Y/N. “Y/N/N, you’re up, make me gorgeous,” Remus stood up and Y/N did the same. “Bold of you to assume I know how to style guy hair,” Y/N teased as she followed Remus to his bathroom. “Well, shit, go nuts then,” Remus only shrugged, but Y/N laughed out loud. “I think we can still make you pretty yet,” she gave him a half smile before going to work on his hair with the products Remus had available. When the two emerged back into the sitting room, the rest of the teens joined a chorus of “ooh” and “ahhhh” “Well done, Y/N/N, I might wear it like this every day,” Remus said striking a pose. Y/N smiled sheepishly and the game continued.
“Y/N, truth or dare,” Remus asked cooly. “Truth,” Y/N felt her cheeks heating up with the fire whiskey, she was definitely getting drunk, but she was still afraid of being dared to do something silly. “What’s got you in such a slump tonight?” He asked. Y/N was taken aback by this. “I um, I don’t..” Y/N shook her head. “We can all tell something is up. What happened?” Sirius prompted her to answer, but gave her an out, “If you don’t want to answer you can take a shot. But we’re here for you.” Y/N nodded and took a deep breath. “I had to kiss Peter Williams in front of an entire audience tonight. I guess I’m just feeling a little put on display. I mean my family usually has eyes on us but they literally paraded us to the front of the room and shoved us together like ‘now kiss!’” “Was he a good kisser at least?” Lily asked. Sirius shot daggers at her and James exclaimed, “Babe!” “Listen I’m not asking for juicy details I just want to know if it was okay or if it was miserable!” Lily defended herself, earning a laugh from Y/N.
“Y/N/N, we don’t have to discuss this if you aren’t comfortable,” Sirius told her, more because he didn’t want to hear it, than anything else. “I mean it was miserable, because of the circumstance and the audience, but I suppose if you take all that away, it was fine. It was nothing. Really, I don’t know. I don’t have anything to compare it to,” Y/N felt her face flush as everyone’s eyes turned to her. “You’ve never…” Sirius started, but swallowed his words. “Nobody?” Lily asked incredulously. Y/N shook her head, “I mean, why would I? I’ve been promised to the same boy forever, it didn’t ever make sense to kiss anyone else,” Y/N ducked her head and hid her face behind her hair. “I mean, yeah, why would you,” Lily agreed, nodding solemnly. “But please, can we move on? That’s enough about me,” Y/N asked sheepishly. “Sure, I’m next!” James had been oddly quiet through the conversation, so his sudden interest made Sirius suspicious.
“Okay, Prongs, truth or dare?” Y/N asked. “Dare,” James waved his hand’s dismissively, as if to ask ‘what else would I choose?’ “Um…” Y/N thought hard for a moment before speaking up again, “I dare you to do the funky chicken for a whole minute!” Everyone laughed, including James who proudly danced for the whole minute straight. “Padfoot,” James said mischievously. “It’s not my turn, mate,” Sirius shook his head and sipped on his fire whiskey shot. “Oh it is, now!” James declared. Sirius had no clue what James was plotting but he knew that for the first time in his life, he did not want to be involved with this one. “Uh-uh,” Sirius shook his head. “Nope, it’s your turn, truth or dare,” James insisted. Sirius looked around the room for help and other than Y/N being confused, everyone seemed to be on James’s side. There wasn’t any way in hell he was going to let James bamboozle him into confessing his feelings for Y/N, so naturally, he calmly said, “Dare.”
“I dare you to kiss Y/N,” James grinned. for a moment, you could hear a hairpin drop. The teenagers sat in stunned silence before Sirius spluttered out, “That’s not fair! Y/N doesn’t have to do anything she doesn’t want to do!” “Who says she doesn’t want to? You’re a good sport, aren’t you, Y/N?” James turned to Y/N who now was nearly frozen in place. “Oh! I mean I… I um.. Well, I,” She didn’t know what to say. Part of her, a large part did want to kiss Sirius and she couldn’t for the life of her figure out why. Would it be uncomfortable, like with Peter? Or would it be easy, because he was so familiar? His lips looked like they’d be nice and soft…. “James, she just complained about kissing someone in front of an audience and now you want her to,” Lily pretended to check her notes, “Kiss someone in front of an audience?” “I just think it’s only right for her to kiss someone she knows in a comfortable setting for once in her life before she-“ James attempted to defend himself but Y/N cut him off, “I’ll do it,” she nodded. “You’ll what?” Sirius whipped his head to look at her.
“He’s right. I might never get to kiss anyone else again, I might as well play the game and kiss you now,” Y/N looked into Sirius’s eyes as his searched her face for any signs of uncertainty. “Well, alright,” Sirius nodded, “C’mhere,” he stood in the center of the makeshift circle the teenagers sat in and opened his arms. Y/N nervously stood up and met him there. No one spoke, everyone held their breath as Y/N shuffled into Sirius’s arms. “You’re sure about this?” he asked her one last time. Y/N bit her lip and nodded, allowing Sirius’s hand to cradle the back of her head as both of their eyes fluttered closed and their lips met. This was nothing like kissing Peter. Sirius’s lips were warm, soft, and inviting against her own, his fingers slightly tangling in her hair as his other hand reached up to cup her cheek. With Peter, things had been chaste, quick, this was not that at all. Y/N’s hands flew up to the back of Sirius’s neck, eliciting a sound from him she would do nearly anything to hear again. Their lips moved in sync, each of them pulling the other closer, closer, closer. Until, “Ahem, if you want to get a room, the guest bed is down the hall,” Remus spoke up, causing Y/N to fly three feet back in embarrassment.
“Oh, I, um, I didn’t, I…” Y/N was at a loss for words and when she shyly looked to Sirius, it was clear he felt the same way, his mouth opened and then shut again at least three times before he decided to just remain silent. “Well, I think Padfoot won truth or dare so… what shall we do next?” James spoke up, trying and failing at trying not to look too pleased with himself. “I reckon it’s time for a snack break,” Lily spoke up, standing and stretching her arms and legs. “We’ll head to the kitchen,” she ushered James and Remus up out of their seats and toward the kitchen. Sirius and Y/N stood in silence for a few moments before Sirius reached out to lightly touch Y/N’s arm. “I’m sorry if I made you uncomfortable at all,” he began to apologize but Y/N shook her head. “No, you didn’t. It was fine, really,” She smiled weakly. “Are you sure, because you look a bit pale,” Sirius pointed out. “Oh, I think I just wasn’t expecting… that,” Y/N admitted. “I guess I didn’t really know what to expect. But I just thought it would be different,” She said.
“Different how?” Sirius asked. He didn’t want to pry but he was dying to confess how he was feeling and he needed her to be on the same page before he did that. “I guess I just didn’t expect to…like it? I dunno,” Y/N shrugged sheepishly. “You liked it?” Sirius perked up at this, his signature smirk returning to his face. “Oh, sod off, will you?” Y/N laughed as she lightly pushed him. “It was nice, alright? We’ll leave it at that. I’m still getting married to Peter, and I don’t want to make things weird,” she said. Sirius was absolutely crushed, but he wasn’t about to let Y/N in on that. “Nothing weird here,” he promised, sticking out his pinky for Y/N to shake. Y/N reached out and wrapped her pinky around his, each of them kissing their own thumb before releasing the swear, like they did when they were children. “Thank you for letting me be your friend,” Y/N said, suddenly serious as she quickly squeezed Sirius in a hug. “Thanks for wanting to be my friend,” he smiled, squeezing her back and pressing a kiss to the top of her head. “I reckon we better go help with the snacks,” Sirius said, reluctantly letting go of Y/N. “You’re right,” Y/N nodded, the two of them trailing into the kitchen with the rest of their friends.
*
It took little time for everyone to get settled back in at school but as much as Y/N hated to admit it, something had changed between her and Sirius at that party. They agreed things shouldn’t be weird, and they weren’t, so why did Y/N feel so strange? All she wanted to do was spend time with Sirius, yet as soon as he came near, her stomach would start doing somersaults. She was getting too comfortable with him, too careless. She nearly forgot she had a role to play at school as well as at home. Nearly. It was only when Cynthia and Dawn confronted her in the library with Sirius that she realized she hadn’t thought about being seen out with him. “Since when do you spend your free time with Gryffindor blood traitors?” Cynthia whispered venomously, crossing her arms as the two girls approached the table where Y/N and Sirius were sitting. Y/N’s cheeks flushed with worry as she imagined the word of her spending time with Sirius getting back to her parents.
“Oh, I-,” Y/N started but Sirius spoke at the same time. “There’s no need for name calling, Cynthia. If you’re attracted to me you can just say that,” he gave her a sarcastic smile and blew a kiss. “As if,” Cynthia scoffed. “Y/N does Peter know that you hang out with… this kind of people?” Dawn asked quietly, avoiding eye contact. Y/N hoped they couldn’t see the panic she felt creeping in. “Well-“ She started “We aren’t hanging out, we got paired to write an essay for history of magic together. You both can un-wad your knickers now,” Sirius cut Y/N off and though they were clearly annoyed with Sirius’s comment, both of the girls visibly relaxed. “Well,” Cynthia hummed, looking around the library. “Try not to let his filth rub off on you,” she said to Y/N, turning to leave with Dawn trailing behind her before Y/N could say anything else.
When she was sure they were out of earshot Y/N said softly to Sirius, “You didn’t have to jump in and lie like that.” “I didn’t want to get you into any trouble,” Sirius shrugged. Y/N gnawed on her cheek. She felt guilty that Sirius felt like he needed to hide their friendship. Sirius noticed her distress and nudged her to get up and follow him. Taking care to make sure no one was around to see them leave together, Sirius led Y/N out of the school and down to the cliff overlooking the black lake. They each took a seat, hanging their legs over the edge. Finally, Y/N sighed. “Sirius, I’m sorry this is so complicated,” she said. “Not your fault, Love,” Sirius shook his head. “It kind of is. If I didn’t care so much about what my parents think, it wouldn’t be like this,” Y/N mumbled. “I mean that’s true,” Sirius agreed, earning a bewildered look from Y/N. “But I don’t blame you. You love them and you want to keep the peace, there’s nothing wrong with that,” Sirius continued. “It just isn’t fair that it has to be so black and white,” Y/N huffed. “‘This is our way and that is theirs.’ It’s just stupid. I’ve done everything they’ve ever asked of me and I’m not even allowed to pick my own friends,” she grumbled. Sirius only put an arm around Y/N’s shoulders as she continued her rant.
“I’m so tired of it all. The whole charade. ‘They’re lesser than us because of their lineage.’ Like get a fucking grip, would you? We’re all the same. Hell, Lily is muggleborn and she’s better at magic than I am! It’s all just bullshit to make people like my parents feel better about themselves. It’s a fucked up system,” The words were coming out and Y/N couldn’t do anything to slow or stop them. “Sometimes I just.. I wish I could leave it all behind. Find something normal to do and just live my life like everyone else,” she admitted, surprising herself with the revelation. Sirius couldn’t believe that she had said that. For a moment, he felt a glimmer of hope in his chest. A chance to win her over, a chance to not have to let her go in a few months. He chewed on his lip for a minute before answering. “You could,” he offered quietly. Y/N laughed without humor. “Yeah, right, sure,” she shook her head. “I mean it. I’m not saying you have to, but I am saying you could. Could leave it all behind and slum it with the lot of us when school ends. We’d be more than happy to have you,” Sirius told her. I’d be more than happy to have you, he thought to himself. But Y/N shook her head again. “I wouldn’t know what to do with myself. You’d all get tired of me so quickly. It would never work,” she murmured. Sirius could feel the opportunity slipping out of his grasp but he was scared of pushing too far. “Well, do what makes you happy, but the door is always open,” Sirius squeezed her into his side for a moment before loosening his grip
but not letting her go.

They were more careful after that. Made sure no one was watching when they snuck out to the forest, and opting to sneak Y/N into the dorm after Cynthia, Dawn, and Ellie had fallen asleep in her own room. This had become the new routine. Trips to the forest after dinner, showers, back to dorms until everyone was asleep, and then into the marauders dorm to hang out as a unit without the eyes of Y/N’s upper class peers on them. If Y/N was tired from the lack of sleep, she didn’t notice. She was having the time of her life with Sirius and the marauders. Every day she woke up invigorated, excited to find out what they would get into next. As much as she hated to admit it, she was falling in love with her secret life.
Before anyone knew it, it was time for the next phase of operation bowtruckle: smuggling Millie into the castle. The previous Saturday, Y/N and the marauders had gone into Hogsmeade to find a nice plant to “decorate” Y/N’s dorm that was bushy enough for Millie to hide in and blend with. Getting Millie into Y/N’a robe pocket was easier than any of them expected, but the hardest part was going to be getting her into the plant without Y/N’s roommates seeing. Y/N split off with the guys and Lily before dinner to drop Millie off in her dorm. To Y/N’s surprise, the dorm was empty when she arrived. She peered both ways down the hallway before be sure the coast was clear before closing herself into the dorm. “Alright sweet girl, here’s your new home,” Y/N opened her hand in front of the decorative plant for Millie to check out. The bowtruckle was apprehensive at first but eventually climbed into the plant. Y/N rewarded her with woodlice before explaining to her that she was to stay hidden.
The door to the dorm suddenly swung open and in poured Ellie, Dawn, and Cynthia. theatre three girls took in the scene: Y/N perched next to her nightstand, unusually close to her decorative plant. “Y/N, are you… talking to your plant?” Ellie asked, concern evident in her voice. “Oh, um, yes. I was reciting poetry. I read somewhere that plants thrive off of the energy you put into them so sometimes I like to recite poetry or read aloud to them,” Y/N straightened her back and spoke with practice and poise, praying silently that Millie would listen and stay hidden. Her dorm mates eyed her for a moment before Dawn cracked up laughing. “If you would have told me at this time last year that Y/N would be the one that turned into a hippie before graduation, I would have laughed in your face. Certainly we all thought it would be Ellie trying to make friends with the foliage,” Dawn snickered and Cynthia cackled along with her. Only Y/N noticed the way Ellie’s shoulders slumped at being the butt of the joke. “Laugh and call me a hippie all you want but when my gardens win awards someday, don’t pretend you didn’t think I was silly for loving my plants,” Y/N said playfully as she dramatically made to exit the room, hoping the girls would follow her and pay no mind to the plant on the nightstand.

The end of the school year was approaching quickly, and with each day that passed, the sense of dread building in the pit of Y/N’s stomach grew larger and larger. She knew what the end of school meant- it meant she had to marry a man she didn’t love. It meant the end of her secret life that she had grown to love so dearly. She was trading her happiness for a stuffy life as a trophy wife and Y/N could feel the walls starting to close in. The marauders pretended not to notice, but they worried for her. They secretly worried for Sirius, too. He was about to lose the person he loved the most, even if he wouldn’t admit he loved her out loud. No one would say it, but there was definitely a shift beginning in the group dynamic.
“Is no one going to bring up the end of the year ball? Because I have like 18 different prank ideas and no one has said anything about it yet,” James broke the comfortable silence the marauders were lounging in about their dorm with Y/N and Lily. The last thing Y/N wanted to think about was having to go to another stuffy event with her stuck up dorm mates, however, the idea of the boys causing chaos and mucking up the event did intrigue her. “What have you got, Prongs?” she asked when no one else did. “Thank you for asking, Y/N/N. First, I thought we could spike the punch with giggle water, but then I wondered if that was a cheap trick because it’s so glaringly obvious…” James rattled through prank ideas and Y/N’s mind started drifting. If only I could hire him to ruin my wedding… she caught herself thinking and shook her head at herself. James misinterpreted this and de-railed his prank list, “Okay, so Y/N doesn’t like the idea of slugs slipped into everyone’s dinner-noted.”
Y/N, who hadn’t been listening, was grateful for the divine timing of her head shake. “Yes, I do think the event will be even more insufferable than usual if we have to stay there the whole time with nothing to eat,” she told him. “I do like the Giggle Water in the punch idea. But you’d have to do it later in the evening or people would catch on and it wouldn’t have the same effect.” “I rather liked the idea of releasing a bunch of billywigs in the middle of the ball,” Remus interjected, looking up from the book he was reading. “Oh, I liked that one too!” Peter agreed. “Where on earth would you get a bunch of Australian insects?” Y/N asked. “Prongs knows a guy,” Remus shrugged, as if it was the simplest thing in the world. “Of course he does,” Y/N narrowed her eyes before giving in to a laugh. “Of course he does,” she repeated, unable to hold back her grin. “We could always do both?” Lily offered. “No one will know why they’re giggling until they start levitating, or maybe not levitating,” She smirked. “What do you think, Sirius? You’re being uncharacteristically quiet for a prank planning conversation,” Y/N asked, scooting over from her place at the end of his bed to next to him so she could nudge him with her shoulder.
“Hm? Yeah, let’s make it a giggle fest, send students flying all over the place, sure,” he shrugged in a noncommittal way, but only Y/N seemed to notice. She linked her pinky with his and gave a small squeeze as James spoke back up, “I’m loving the enthusiasm from you all but I still have like nine other ideas…” Sirius lifted his gaze to Y/N who raised an eyebrow at him to ask are you alright? He gave her a smile that wasn’t entirely convincing but Y/N let it go. Whatever was bothering him, she wasn’t going to bring it up in front of everyone. Y/N turned her attention back to James, and Sirius squeezed her pinky. She glanced back at him long enough for them to share a look, and then turned her attention back to James once more, willing her cheeks not to show the heat from where Sirius hadn’t unlinked their pinkies. Y/N tried to focus on what James was saying, but the tingle where her hand she was connected to Sirius’s was difficult to ignore.
“And then I thought it would be hilarious if we somehow enchanted the instruments to only play SKA!” James laughed. “Why ska?” Remus piped in. “Because it’s nearly impossible to dance to, duh,” James scoffed, as if everyone should know that. “Well I’m still team Giggle Water and billywigs,” Remus replied. “Me too,” Peter agreed. “Well babe, two out of 18 isn’t a bad turnout?” Lily offered. “I do think the billywigs will be especially comical,” Sirius finally said, and Y/N agreed, “Let’s cause a scene.” Glancing at the clock in the marauders’ dorm, Y/N groaned. “I suppose I should be getting back to my dorm,” she said. Even though I’m growing to hate it and most of the people I share it with, Y/N thought bitterly. She’d come to realize how cruel Dawn and Cynthia were to people they deemed “less than,” but Ellie seemed to have a heart under her cool exterior.
“I’ll walk with you,” Sirius offered, standing up as Y/N retrieved her shoes. “Sure, yeah,” Y/N nodded, walking to the door and waiting for him there. After bidding everyone a good night, Y/N and Sirius made it to the Gryffindor common room in silence before Y/N spoke up. “Are you feeling alright?” she asked gently. “I’m grand,” Sirius gave her another smile that didn’t reach his eyes. Y/N narrowed her eyes at him, but he wouldn’t relent. “Look, if you don’t want to talk about it, that’s one thing. But don’t just lie to me about it,” Y/N chewed her lip as she waited for Sirius to respond. He was quiet for a moment before he finally admitted, “You’re right.” Y/N waited for him to go on, expecting him to confess why he had been acting weird. But all he said was, “I don’t want to talk about it.” Y/N let out a surprised scoff. “Well alright then. We won’t talk about it,” Y/N quickened her pace a
few steps ahead of Sirius until she made it to the common room door. “I can make it from here,” she said pointedly, looking anywhere but at Sirius.
“Wait, there is something I’d like to talk to you about, if you’ll let me walk you to your common room,” Sirius offered, extending his hand. Y/N gnawed on her lower lip for a moment before cautiously taking his hand, “Alright…” The pair walked quietly for a few minutes, fingers loosely intertwined. Finally Sirius spoke up, “I was thinking, this end of school ball isn’t going to be all that fun if you spend the whole time with your dorm mates and we keep to ourselves,” Sirius started. Y/N didn’t say anything, but when he glanced over at her, he had her full attention so he continued. “I thought, maybe if you could get away for just a few minutes- before we send it all to hell, anyway-we might could manage to make it a little fun, and then you can go back to your friends and act surprised when we cause trouble,” Sirius offered. “I’d really like that,” Y/N nodded. “Where will we meet? How should I get away?” she asked. “Truthfully, this is not one of my better thought out plans, I just wanted some extra time with you,” Sirius admitted, rubbing the back of his neck.
Y/N couldn’t help but smile. “That’s okay. We’ll come up with something,” she assured him, squeezing his hand as they approached her common room door. Sirius let Y/N’s hand go and opened his arms for a hug and Y/N gladly stepped closer to wrap her arms around his neck. “Goodnight, Y/N/N. Get some sleep,” Sirius murmured as he snaked his arms around Y/N’s waist and pulled her tightly to him. “Goodnight, Sirius. Don’t get caught going back to your dorm, please,” Y/N replied, stifling a yawn. Sirius chuckled and pressed a kiss to the top of her head before releasing her. “I never get caught,” he smirked, winking at her before turning and making his way out of the dungeons.

Winter break crept up before anyone knew it. All of a sudden the air was crisp, snow was falling, and it was time to board the train back to London. By now, all the marauders could tell that Y/N was anxious to return home by the way she chewed the inside of her lip and cheek as the train chugged along the tracks. Finally Sirius spoke up. “Everything alright, Y/N/N?” he asked carefully, trying not to let on that she was freaking everyone out with her silence. “Hm? Oh, yes,” she hummed noncommittally, not looking away from the window. Sirius, who was sitting next to her, nudged her gently and raised his eyebrows, prompting her to give him a more truthful answer.
Y/N sighed. “I have a fitting appointment for my wedding dress tomorrow,” she admitted, “I guess I’m just a little bit nervous.” The marauders looked between each other, unsure of how to reply to her confession. Lily spoke up next, “The fitting itself shouldn’t be so bad though, right? I’m sure they’ll do whatever they can to make you feel comfortable. Snacks, I bet they’ll even have champagne for you. Rosehart is designing your dress, right? It’ll be fancy and beautiful, and you might even have fun,” she offered. “Yeah, Amelia designed it. She did my gown for the engagement party as well. She is nice, and I’m sure there will be snacks and champagne. You’re right, maybe it won’t be so bad,” Y/N smiled weakly, trying to convince the others and herself. Silence fell over the group once more.
“So what does everyone have planned for break?” James asked, desperately trying to ease the tension. Lily smacked him in the arm. “Oi! Besides the dress fitting!” he exclaimed. Y/N did her best to smile at him but she let everyone answer before she took her turn. “Mum and Pop want to spend the holidays with my grandparents so we’re staying at their stuffy old house the whole time!” Wormtail cried, grateful for his opportunity to complain. “That is most unfortunate,” Sirius wrinkled his nose. “We usually travel for Christmas but we’re staying home this year. I was actually going to see if you all wanted to come for New Year’s Eve?” Remus asked, looking around the cart. “Wormtail I assume you’re stuck at dear old Granny’s, but what about everyone else?” James, Lily, and Sirius all nodded their replies and all of their eyes landed on Y/N at the same time.
“Oh, Remus, as much as I would love to… The Williamses throw a New Year’s Eve party every year and I’m expected to be there this year, so I don’t see how I would ever be allowed to miss that, especially to hang out with…” Y/N trailed off. “Lowlife Gryffindor blood traitors?” Sirius offered sarcastically, but the sharpness in his tone did not go unnoticed by the rest of the group. “I was going to say people my parents haven’t met yet, but I especially wouldn’t be able to come if my parents knew you were going to be there,” Y/N looked down shamefully. “S’Alright, I don’t care for them either,” Sirius shrugged. “I-I’m sorry, everyone,” Y/N went back to worrying her lip between her teeth. Sirius slung an arm around her shoulders. “Oi love, no one is mad at you for having prior plans,” he assured her. Everyone murmured their agreement.
“However if you wanted to sneak out and meet us, we’re gonna stay up ALL NIGHT partying!” James suggested excitedly. “Y/N could never,” Sirius laughed. Y/N scoffed, “I could so! I’m not incapable of having fun, I just don’t like to cause trouble and sneaking out is a lot of trouble,” she protested. “No, I’m sure you could,” Sirius tried his best to keep a straight face but ended up laughing. “I mean it, Sirius, I could too!” she huffed. “Alright sweetheart, whatever you say,” Sirius ruffled her hair. “Fine! Remus, write down your address for me,” she barked, “I’ll show you,” she muttered, slinking out from under Sirius’s arm. “Then I look forward to seeing you for the New Year,” Sirius grinned smugly.

“Didn’t anyone from school want to come with you today, Dear?” Y/N’s mother asked as the two women approached the shop in London where the fitting was being held. “Oh, I didn’t realize I could bring anyone,” Y/N admitted. “Of course you could have! No matter, I’ll make sure you look perfect myself,” her mother assured as she hurried along the bustling streets of London. Y/N followed silently, unsure of what else to say. She didn’t want to tell her mother that she couldn’t think of a single person she would want to accompany her for this, anyway. “Hello, gorgeous!” Amelia greeted Y/N with a hug as soon as she entered the shop. “Hi, Amelia,” Y/N smiled. “Let’s not dally, I’m so excited to see how you feel in your dress!” Amelia exclaimed, ushering Y/N and her mother back to their private room.
Once the dress was on, Y/N was led to a room with three large mirrors creating a half circle around her. “What do you think, Dear?” her mother asked, beaming. “Yes, tell us! Of course it will be a better fit once I make some adjustments but I’m sure you can imagine how beautiful it will be,” Amelia chimed in. Y/N studied her reflection in the mirror for a few moments and all she wanted to do was scream. Instead, she put on her most dazzling smile. “It’s radiant, Amelia. Thank you so much for your hard work,” Y/N reached out to lightly touch Amelia’s arm. “You are radiant, my dear, the dress just makes you stand out even more,” Amelia told Y/N as Y/M/N dabbed at her eyes with a tissue. Y/N thought it ironic that her mother was crying while all Y/N wanted to do was cry herself for completely different reasons. The two women fussed over Y/N and her dress for a few more minutes before Amelia finally promoted Y/N to change back into her clothes and she and her mother headed back to the streets of London.
When Y/N returned home, she couldn’t shake the feeling of dread that was creeping through her body. She tried to read her favorite book, tried cuddling with Desdemona, tried tending to her plants in the conservatory, but nothing was helping. She decided to write a letter to Sirius. She wasn’t sure how her parents would react to an unfamiliar owl bringing his reply but she would worry about that later. She had to get this off her chest. She scribbled everything down on the paper: How alone she felt at the fitting, how perhaps she wasn’t as ready for this marriage as she thought she was, how the dread was beginning to eat at her, how she wished she could blow all of this off and just spend the break with him and his friends because she felt a since of home with them that she’d never felt before- There was no way she could send this letter to anyone, let alone Sirius. It had gotten too personal. Y/N shook her head at her self as she placed her pen down on her desk. “You’re losing it Y/N/N,” she muttered to herself, sighing and folding the letter away into her journal. She carefully put her journal away before scooping Desdemona up into her arms and curling up in bed with her.

Christmas passed, and as the new year rolled in, Y/N wasn’t feeling any better about her future. Her hands shook as she applied the final touches of her makeup for the Williamses New Year’s Eve party. Her mother’s voice rang from down the hall, “Are you almost ready, Dear?” she asked. “Yes, Mother,” Y/N called back, dabbing on a final bit of blush. She joined her parents and they linked arms, preparing to apparate to the Williams’ home. “Um, before we go, I actually had a question,” Y/N tried to keep her voice even. She knew sneaking out was not an option, but she thought perhaps she could leave out as much information as possible and talk her parents into letting her go. “I know we have plans this evening with the Williamses, but I got invited to an event by a friend from school tonight and I was wondering if maybe I could drop in at some point, after we’ve spent time at the New Year’s party?” she asked.
“Well, darling, the Williams’s event is going to run until nearly 1 o’clock in the morning…” Her mother trailed off. “That’s actually alright! I can apparate there when we’re ready to leave the Williams’ house. My event is going to run all night,” Y/N tried. “What kind of respectable event runs later than 1 o’clock?” Y/F/N asked with disapproval in his voice. “Well,” Y/N started, unsure of what else to say. Her mother cut in, “Oh, they’re young, dear! Let them enjoy the night,” she smiled. “Oh, thank you, Mother-“ Y/N began but her mother cut her off again. “I expect you to behave in a manner that reflects well on all of us,” She said sharply. Y/N ducked her head, “Yes, Mother. Thank you.”
When the Y/L/Ns arrived at the Williams’ house, they were greeted by their house elf, Nolby. “Welcome, I will take your coats,” he said stiffly. Y/N wore a long, strapless silver dress with a white faux fur shawl, and opted to keep her shawl around her while her parents shrugged off heir coats and nearly dropped them on top of the house elf. Margaux appeared with Peter, eager to greet Y/N and her parents. “Welcome, welcome!” Margaux exclaimed, greeting Y/N and her mother with a la bise. “Thank you for inviting us to your lovely home,” Y/N dipped at the knee to show her respect and when she returned to her position, Margaux nudged Peter toward Y/N. “The pleasure is ours, allow me to lead you to the others,” Peter offered Y/N his arm and Y/N carefully took it and let him lead her into another room.
Y/N and her parents were among the first to arrive, and as others trickled in, they all made a point to see Y/N and Peter, the engagement seeking to he all anyone could talk about. In a spare moment when no one could hear, Y/N murmured to Peter, “I can’t believe no one has anything better to talk about. It’s been months since the engagement party!” He only snickered and muttered back, “It’s probably the only thing anyone here has to look forward to, it’s a bit depressing, isn’t it?” Y/N laughed out loud at this, earning a few startled looked from attendees and stern look from her mother across the room. Y/N quickly composed herself and stood up straighter. “I’m sorry,” Peter started, “I didn’t mean for-“ but Y/N shook her head. “It’s not your fault,” she assured him. “Do you want to get out of here for a moment?” Peter asked suddenly. “Um, I don’t think your parents would-“ Y/N tried to protest but Peter linked their arms together once more. “We’ll hardly be gone long enough for them to miss us. But trust me, you’re gonna want to come with me,” he grinned. “Oh, merlin, what the hell, why not?” Y/N shrugged and let Peter lead her away from the party down a hallway full of doors.
“Where are we going?” Y/N asked after two minutes of completely silent walking. “It’s a surprise,” Peter smiled as he continued to lead the way. “Alright, as my future partner in life, you should know that I am not fond of surprises,” Y/N told him. Peter only chuckled, “I’m sure you’re gonna like this one.” After nearly another minute, he stopped in front of a door. “Ready?” he asked, beaming. “Uh, sure, yeah. What have you got?” Y/N let go of his arm so he could open the door to reveal a huge ball of white fluff running at the pair of teenagers at full speed. “Oh my GODRIC, Peter!” Y/N nearly squealed with delight as the samoyed sniffed at her feet and hands before leaning into her touch. “That’s my boy, Thor,” Peter told her with a grin. “Thor, where are your manners?” he asked the dog. Immediately, the dog sat down and offered Y/N his paw. “Well, hello Mr. Thor!” Y/N exclaimed, bending her knees to crouch down to the dog’s level to shake his paw. “It’s funny, I remembered you saying that you had a dog, but for some reason I didn’t expect him to be here. Which is ridiculous, because Desdemona goes everywhere with me,” Y/N rambled.
“You seemed a little tense in there, I thought this might help,” Peter offered. “Wait, I did? You don’t think anyone else could tell, do you?” Y/N asked worriedly. “No, I don’t reckon so, I only could tell because of the way you would squeeze my arm when someone said something that made you uncomfortable,” Peter admitted. “Oh, Merlin, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to-“ Peter cut Y/N off, “They’re acting like vultures out there. You’re handling them all with grace and poise, there’s no need to apologize.” Y/N gave him a grateful smile and Thor one last pat before standing back up straight. “I suppose we should be getting back,” she sighed. “I hate that you’re right. Come on, Thor, back inside,” Peter ushered the dog back into his bedroom and led a much more at ease Y/N back to the party.

“I reckon she isn’t coming, mate,” James gave Sirius a pitiful look, “Tough break.” “Oh would you shut up, she told us she had other plans tonight, of course she isn’t coming,” Sirius huffed, taking a long swig from the bottle of fire whiskey. “Hey! That bottle is supposed to be for everyone for shots!” Lily protested, but Sirius just took another drink. “Don’t punish us with your germs just because the girl you have a crush on had other things to do than bum around with us,” Remus agreed with Lily. “I do not have a crush on her,” Sirius grumbled, but finally put down the bottle. James swiped it up and immediately poured four shots. “Sure you don’t. I never had a crush on Lily, either,” James laughed out loud. “I mean it, mate, she’s just my friend. She’s getting married after we finish school,” He reminded James. Everyone somberly took their shots. The teenagers sat in silence for several minutes after that, Sirius’s comment effectively ruining the mood.
“What if you told her?” Lily finally asked after minutes of silence. “Told her what?” Sirius asked, genuinely confused. “How you feel, of course! You don’t think she’d feel the same way? I’ve seen how the two of you interact, something is definitely there,” Lily encouraged. “No, I don’t think she’d feel the same way,” Sirius scoffed. “Her parents sold her away years ago, all she’s ever known is that she’s gonna marry some stuck up rich guy. I’m definitely not that,” his face twisted in disdain. “Y/N has probably never allowed herself to have feelings for anyone because why would she if she knows she belongs to someone else?” Sirius rambled as his friends silently listened.
“Hell, even if she somehow did feel the same way, she’s too inhibited to do anything about it. She’ll do anything to please her parents, even if that means marrying someone she doesn’t want to marry, even when there’s someone else she does want to marry. I may love her, but she would never love me enough to give up her life the way it is now,” Sirius concluded. “You don’t know that,” Lily shook her head. “You don’t know that at all. Maybe she feels the same way and she just needs to know you feel the same way to make the leap?” Lily offered. “She could be right, mate,” James chimed in, but Sirius only shook his head. “Not a chance,” he said solemnly.

“There you two are! It’s almost midnight!” Y/N’s mother cried as Peter and Y/N returned to the party. “Oh, sorry, madam, I just-“ Peter started but Y/M/N cut him off, “No matter, dear! You’re here just in time for your New Year’s kiss!” “Our what?” Y/N hoped her tone was even and her face didn’t look as horrified as she felt. “Why, it’s tradition to kiss your loved one at midnight, of course,” Margaux interjected. Y/N looked at Peter like a deer in the headlights. “I mean, we aren’t married yet,” she tried to emit elegance and grace, there’s way her mother did when she was being firm. “No, but indulge us! You’ll be married by the end of the year, you should start the year together,” Y/F/N spoke up. “Um…” Y/N looked around at the adults and the boy she was to marry and realized she had no leg to stand on. “Alright,” she nodded, steeling herself.
When the clock hit 11:59, Y/N and Peter took their places at the head of the room. Y/N took a series of deep breaths. “It’ll be alright, all we have to give them is a little peck, maybe five seconds, and then we’re done,” Peter murmured so only she could hear. “Five seconds,” Y/N repeated, nodding. Everyone started counting down from 20. “Five seconds,” Peter assured her. “17… 16… 15…”
Y/N took another deep breath and looked around the room, suddenly feeling ill. “13…12…11…” “Hey, just look at me. We’re in this together,” Peter took her hands in his and have them a squeeze. “Eine… eight… seven…” Y/N gripped Peter’s hands like iron. “Four… three… two… one!” Y/N closed her eyes and leaned forward to meet Peter in a chaste kiss. One, two, three, four, five, Y/N counted in her mind before pulling away as gracefully as she could. The room exploded with cheers, and Y/N felt like she was going to hurl. Instead, she put on her most dazzling smile and stepped in line with Peter, who put a gentle arm around her waste as he smiled at the crowd as well.
Once most of the guests had cleared out, Y/N’s father sought her out to let her know it was time to leave. “Is it still okay for me to go to my event?” She asked, gnawing at her bottom lip. “I suppose. When will you be home if this event is running so late into the night?” Y/F/N asked sternly. “Oh, I’m not sure…” Y/N really had no idea what to tell him, not wanting to give away anything that might stop him from letting her go. Her mother stepped up, “Just be home for supper tomorrow, Dear. And remember, behave,” Y/M/N reached over and squeezed Y/N’s arm. “I will. Thank you, again!” Y/N squeezed her mother’s hand before wrapping her shawl around her tighter. She said her goodbyes to the Williamses and tried to hide her giddiness as she made her way outside to apparate to Remus’s house.
Remus opened the door with a wide grin merely seconds after Y/N knocked on the door. “You made it!” He exclaimed, alcohol evident on his breath. “Who made it?” James asked from down the hall, appearing shortly after. “Oh hell! Padfoot come here!” James yelled, grabbing Y/N by the hand and yanking her through the door. “What are you wearing?” James asked, gesturing to Y/N’s elegant dress with her hair done up and high heels clacking on the floor. “What do you lot want-“ Sirius stopped dead in his tracks when he turned the corner and saw Y/N standing just inside the doorway. “Y/N/N,” Sirius said slowly, swallowing anything else he could have possibly wanted to say. “Sorry about my outfit,” Y/N ducked her head, embarrassed at how overdressed she was. “My parents were already suspicious because of how late it is, if I dressed casual for an event they wouldn’t allow me to go,” Y/N avoided everyone’s eyes as she worried away at the hem of her shawl.
“Don’t be sorry, love, you look absolutely radiant,” Sirius assured her, giving her a genuine smile. “However, if you want to be more comfortable, I have extra sweatpants and a flannel you could borrow, if that’s better for you,” he offered. Y/N nodded gratefully, “That would be really nice.” Sirius offered her hand and led her toward Remus’s bedroom. Lily, who was still in the living room, called out to stop them as they walked past. “Y/N you look like a queen!” Y/N blushed, “Thank you, Lily.” “Let’s de-glamify you,” Sirius laughed, lighting pulling Y/N’s hand to lead her back on track to Remus’s room. “Um, Sirius this is really embarrassing, but I can’t get out of this dress by myself, would you mind unzipping it for me before you step out,” Y/N asked sheepishly as Sirius laid out his clothes for her to put on. “Of course, love,” he gave her a gentle smile and made his way over to where she was standing. “Turn around for me,” he instructed. Y/N did as she was told. Sirius’s hands were shaking as he reached up for her zipper and he prayed to anyone and everyone he could think of to just please, not let her notice.
When his fingers brushed the skin on her back, Y/N’s breath hitched. Sirius pretended not to notice. He drew the zipper all the way down before stepping back and murmuring, “There you are.” Neither of them moved for a few moments until Sirius stepped back. “Take as much time as you need, make yourself at home, if you need anything, I’ll be in the sitting room with everyone else,” he gave her a soft smile before turning to leave. Y/N steeled herself before slipping out of her dress. Get it together, Y/N, she told herself. They were kind enough to invite you here, you can’t let them know how miserable you are. Smile pretty and make sure they’re happy you’re here. Y/N took a deep breath and made her way into Remus’s bathroom, which was connected to his bedroom. She enchanted a facecloth to remove her makeup and left her hair up as it was. After practicing her smile in the mirror a few times, she stood up straighter and walked into the sitting room to join the others.
Y/N noticed Sirius seemingly staring at her, but before she could ask why, James stood up. “Y/N/N, it is obvious to me that you are nowhere near on our level so I’m gonna need you to do two shots right now to even the playing field,” James beamed, pouring two shots and shoving them in her direction. “Even what playing field?” Y/N tilted her head, but accepted the shot glasses in both of her hands. “For truth or dare, of course,” James waggled his eyebrows.
Summary: Y/N catches on that something weird is happening once a month
Word count: 3,067
Y/N really did believe Sirius when he told her about the shrieking shack project, but then Professor Dumbledore conveniently wanted to hold onto the project for himself after Professor Binns graded it, and then on the next full moon, the boys suddenly had an astronomy project come up and they missed more school and more days of operation bowtruckle. The final straw was when the third full moon came around and James, Remus, and Peter returned to class but Sirius remained missing, and then Professor Binns grabbed Y/N after class. “Miss Y/L/N, it seems that Mr. Black is caught up in the hospital wing and you two seem to be close, would you help him with the notes for today’s lesson?” He asked her. “The, the hospital wing?” Y/N asked, remembering her dream from those months ago. “Oh, he’ll be alright, he just doesn’t need to fall behind,” Profressor Binns assured her. Y/N nodded and clutched her parchment and textbooks closer to her as she all but ran to the hospital wing.
When she arrived, she found Sirius in a bed all the way at the end of the wing, his face scratched up and bruises covered the skin she could see on his arms. “Oh Sirius,” she murmured as she approached him. “Hey there love,” he did his best to grin. “What happened to you?” she asked, sitting down next to where he lay in bed and brushing a strand of hair from his face. “Just got caught in some devil’s snare, no biggy,” he shrugged. “Why were you in devil’s snare?” Y/N asked him. “It was for the project-“ he started, but Y/N cut him off. “No more bullshit about the projects, Sirius. I know you’re disappearing every full moon and if this is the condition you’re going to come back in, I need to know why,” She said as sternly as she could. “Y/N,” Sirius sighed.
“No. Do not ‘Y/N’ me. You don’t get to keep lying to me if I’m going to be the one sent to take care of you when you get back. And if you insist on lying, I’ll do my own research and I’ll find out what’s going on because there’s no way I can deal with seeing you like this on a regular basis,” She told him. “Well I don’t come back like this every time,” Sirius tried to tell her, but the look on Y/N’s face made him stop. “You’re not going to let this go, are you?” He asked, gazing deep into Y/N’s eyes. “I can’t stand seeing you like this, Sirius,” she whispered. “Okay, fine. But I can’t tell you about it here. You’re gonna have to wait until I’m able to leave and then meet me in the Forbidden Forest,” Sirius told her. This wasn’t what Y/N was expecting. She was expecting more pushback, more of a fight. “Um, okay. Yeah. Fine,” She nodded blankly. “Would you like to share the notes from today’s lesson with me now?” Sirius asked with a smirk. “Right! The lesson!” Y/N exclaimed and scrambled for her notes and the lesson in the textbook and she and Sirius got to work on catching him up.
A day later, Sirius was released from the hospital wing and it came time for Y/N to meet him in the Forbidden Forest. She arrived at the meeting spot exactly three minutes early, and eight minutes later there was still no sign of Sirius, but a big black dog showed up out of no where. It looked like a large german shepherd, but its coat was all deep black. “Hi there, friend,” Y/N said to the dog. She held her hand out and the dog came right over and rubbed their head against her palm. “What are you doing out here, hm? Are you a friend of Hagrid’s?” She asked, petting them for a few minutes and then beginning to worry because she had still seen no sign of Sirius. “I can not believe he lied to me again,” she grumbled to herself. “I’ve got to go, little friend. Take care of yourself out there,” She gave the dog one last pet before giving up on Sirius and turning to go back to the castle.
“I didn’t lie this time!” Sirius’s voice sounded from behind her and Y/N turned around, startled. The dog was nowhere in sight but sure enough, there was Sirius. “Where have you been? You’re late,” she huffed. “I’ve actually been here the whole time, you just can’t freak out,” Sirius warned her. “Enough with this, Sirius. Why would I freak out-“ But as she was finishing her sentence, right in front of her eyes, Sirius turned into the dog she had been petting moments ago. “You-you’re an animagus!” She exclaimed. “Okay, so you’re an animagus, what on earth have you been doing that leaves you-“ She had a million questions, but Sirius was ready to tell her the whole story. He changed back into himself and began to speak, “I’m not the only one. James is a stag, and Peter turns into a rat, but we’re unregistered. The only people who know are us and the staff of the school. We have to be able to do this to help Remus,” He explained. “Why? What’s wrong with Remus?” Y/N asked. “Y/N what I’m about to tell you can’t get to anyone else. His life depends on it,” Sirius said solemnly. “Of course I won’t tell anyone, why are you being so weird?” Y/N furrowed her eyebrows.
“You can’t let this change your perception of Remus either. It’s not his fault and he can’t change it, and he does everything he can in his power to-“ Y/N cut him off, “Oh would you just spit it out already?!” Sirius took a deep breath. “Remus is a werewolf,” he told her. “Oh, how awful!” Y/N exclaimed. Sirius scoffed and stepped away from her. “I can’t believe you would judge him for something-“ Sirius started. “Sirius, I don’t mean that he is awful, I mean how awful for him. I’ve read that it’s a painful transformation and most of them live their lives shamed to live away from people,” Y/N said. “Oh. Well, yeah it is awful for him. He used to chain himself up in the shrieking shack and attack himself because no one was around,” Sirius recalled. “But now we’re there with him for him to chase and us to evade to keep him busy through the night without harming anyone. Except he got me this time,” Sirius explained. “He got you?” Y/N asked. “Yeah. But s’alright, happens to the best of us,” Sirius shrugged.
“How did he.. how did he become a werewolf?” Y/N asked quietly. “A werewolf named Fenrir Greyback attacked him when he was four to get revenge on Remus’s father,” Sirius murmured, “It was horrible. His parents took care of him as best they could and then when it was time for school they begged Dumbledore to let him come and be a normal kid-Thus the shrieking shack plan was formed. And then when we all found out, we took the steps to become animagai to help him,” he explained. “So every full moon you all go out and…” “Protect Remus from himself basically, yeah,” Sirius nodded.
“You really are the best group of friends anyone could have, huh?” Y/N asked. “That’s what I’ve been saying!” Sirius laughed, and Y/N laughed along with him. “And Lily knows?” Y/N asked. “Yeah, Lily knows. She figured it out shortly after she started dating James. I knew you could figure it out too, but I thought it better I tell you than you find out on your own,” Sirius told her, and Y/N nodded. “I appreciate you telling me,” she said, “And I won’t tell anyone else.” “Thank you,” Sirius sighed. “I really am glad you’re okay, though,” Y/N offered. “Yeah, me too,” Sirius smiled at her and the two settled into a comfortable silence.
“That’s why we call Peter ‘Wormtail’ sometimes,” Sirius spoke up. “Because he’s a rat?” Y/N asked. “Yeah. And his tail looks like a worm. We call James ‘Prongs’ and Remus ‘Moony,’” Sirius told her. “Because he changes with the moon?” Y/N laughed. “Exactly, yeah,” Sirius offered her a smile. “It’s a wonder no one figured it out from that. He’s gone every full moon and you guys call him Moony? How didn’t I see it before?” Y/N pondered. “Oh we’re extra careful about nicknames around you. Precisely because you’re so perceptive and you would have picked up on it,” Sirius explained. “Aw, you’re threatened by my intelligence, how cute,” Y/N teased. “Yeah, yeah,” Sirius nudged her shoulder with his and Y/N nudged him back.
“What do they call you?” She asked. “Although your name is already Sirius Black, I don’t see how much more obvious it could be that you’re a black dog,” she laughed. “They call me ‘Padfoot,’” Sirius grinned. “Ah, because dogs have padded feet,” Y/N nodded. “Bingo,” Sirius pointed at her with two finger guns and Y/N laughed again. “So is Remus okay?” Y/N finally asked. “Oh, yeah he’s alright. He’s been doing this 12 times a year for 13 years, he’s a champ,” Sirius assured her. “Good, good… Oh I just can’t imagine what he’s had to go through. Poor guy,” Y/N sighed. “Yeah, he’s been through it. But he’s tough. And he’s got great friends taking care of him, if I do say so myself,” Sirius dramatically sat up straighter. “Yeah,” Y/N smiled at him,” He really does.”
-
“I heard you had a rough few days,” Y/N murmured, sitting down next to Remus in the library. “Sirius mentioned he was going to let you in on our little inside tale,” Remus responded in a hushed tone. Y/N dug in her bag and pulled out a chocolate frog and placed the box on the table next to Remus’s open book. “Here, it’s supposed to help your brain release endorphins, but I’m sure you knew that already,” she said. “Thank you,” Remus hummed as he picked his book up
again. “I’m sorry I made you feel like you needed to hide it all this time,” Y/N said, her voice just above a whisper. Remus placed his book back on the table and turned in his seat to face her.
“Y/N, I wasn’t hiding it from you because of you specifically, I hide it from everyone. You just stuck around long enough to notice something was up, so I reckoned it was only fair that you knew. Sirius trusts you, so I trust you. More importantly than that, you’re also my friend, so it makes sense for you to know,” Remus assured her quietly. Y/N could only nod. She’d never had real friends before, only people who wanted to get closer to her because of her name. She wasn’t sure what else to say. “Listen, I’ve got to get going, but thank you for the frog. Don’t be so hard on yourself, we all like you just fine,” Remus smiled as he gathered his belongings and left Y/N feeling a new sense of warmth and belonging deep within her chest.
Y/N stayed in the library until she needed to make her way to class. As soon as she spotted Sirius in the hallway, she dashed up to him. “So Remus called me his friend earlier,” She told Sirius, unable to help but beam as she recalled the conversation to Sirius, finishing with the bit about Remus telling her the group liked her. Sirius grinned as she spoke. He knew full well his friends liked her, but he was more so excited that Y/N liked them, too. His heart swelled as she was nearly bouncing with excitement as she walked. “I told you you’d fit right in,” he smiled, gently bumping his hip into hers. “I know you did. but everyone else here has usually already made up their mind about me before they meet me. It means a lot to me that you guys want to know the real me, even if i don’t know who that person really is,” Y/N gave a weak laugh but Sirius could tell she was being genuine.
Sirius stopped her outside of the classroom. “We should cut class today,” he said suddenly. “Sirius, why on earth would we-“ Y/N started but Sirius cut her off. “My bowtruckle sensor is tingling. We’ve got to visit Millie,” Sirius decided. He grabbed Y/N by the hand and pulled her past the History of Magic room. Y/N couldn’t contain her laughter as the two of them ran hand in hand to the forbidden forest, only quieting down upon reaching their destination to not scare off the animals. “You know if anyone catches us skipping class out here-“ Y/N started. “I’m not afraid of a little detention,” Sirius chuckled, noticing Y/N had lowered her voice but hadn’t dropped his hand. That sobered Y/N right up. “Sirius, I can’t get detention, my parents would kill me,” She told him somberly.
“Oh Godric, Sirius! If I get detention and the school writes them a letter telling them i’m in trouble because I snuck out with you!” she let go of his hand and ran her anxious fingers through her hair. “I’m not gonna take that personally because I know your parents and I know they hate me. But I’m also not gonna let you get in trouble. Do you trust me?” Sirius replied, offering Y/N his hand once more. Y/N looked between his outstretched hand and the rowboat sitting ready to take the pair to bowtruckle island. She took a deep breath before placing her hand in his. “Yeah, I do. Let’s do this,” Y/N’s voice was filled with determination as she gripped Sirius’s hand in hers. “Off we go,” Sirius grinned, helping her into the boat and then pushing off toward their destination.
Sirius was quiet as he rowed them to Bowtruckle Island. In reality, he wasn’t sure how to say what he wanted to say, but Y/N mistook his quietness for worry. “It’s not too late to head back if you’re worried about getting in trouble,” she assured him. “Hm? Oh, I’m not worried about that at all. I’ve still got enough cuts and bruises to tell the professors I was feeling bad and you helped take care of me. No trouble in sight,” he promised. “Oh, okay,” Y/N shrugged. A few more minutes passed in silence. “Why did you want to come out today, anyway?” Y/N asked as they approached the island. “I thought the plan left a few more weeks of visiting Millie before we brought her back to the castle?” she pondered.
“The plan is still the plan,” Sirius assured her. “And we can still come back with everyone later if you still want to,” he told her. “Then why..?” Y/N furrowed her eyebrows as she trailed off. “I wanted to talk and we couldn’t have done that if we went to class,” Sirius admitted. “Talk about what?” Y/N tried not to show it, but she was nervous about what he wanted to say. What if the rest of his friends were upset that he had told her? Remus had said he was fine with it, but what if James and Peter and Lily weren’t ready for her to know? “You just seemed so surprised that Moony would want to be your friend,” Sirius snapped her out of her thought spiral. “Well, yes,” Y/N agreed. “I mean he and I have always gotten along, but I get along with everyone. That doesn’t mean anything,” Y/N shook her head, ducking behind her hair a little.
“That’s what I’m talking about, Y/N,” Sirius sighed. “Oh, you mean he doesn’t actually want to be my friend?” she asked, nervously twirling a strand of her hair between her fingers. “Merlin, Y/N/N you are insanely obtuse for someone so good at networking,” Sirius groaned. Y/N’s puzzled face prompted him to keep going. “Everyone just adores you,” Sirius told her. “We’ve talked about this Sirius, no one really knows me that well. I don’t even know me that well,” Y/N shrugged off his praise, feeling undeserving. “Y/N,” Sirius shook his head and took her hand in his. “You’re smart, and funny, and more kind than anyone gives you credit for. You think that people don’t know you because you don’t let them, but I do. I know you. The other guys, Moony and Prongs and Wormtail and Lily, we know you,” Sirius wanted to tell her how much he loved her. How he looked forward to classes for the first time ever just because he knew he would see her and sit next to her. How these last few months of getting to know her all over again were the best of his life, but he couldn’t bring himself to.
“We all love you, Y/N/N. Not Y/N Y/L/N, the character you play- You. Just as you are,” he squeezed her hand. “Sirius,” Y/N chewed on her bottom lip. “You’re excellent with animals and have a greener thumb than anyone I’ve ever met. You write beautiful poetry, and you haven’t let me read it but I know you like to journal and write down how you’re feeling and what you’re thinking and you’re just so brilliant. The real you blows us all away,” Sirius squeezed her hand again as he spoke. “I wouldn’t have trusted you with our secret if you didn’t. Remus wouldn’t have let me tell you if you weren’t one of us. The whole lot of us, we want you around as long as you want us, yeah?” Sirius searched Y/N’s face as she worried away at her bottom lip as he spoke. Finally, a smile crept across her face and she squeezed his hand. “Thank you, Sirius,” She said softly. “For seeing me when I don’t know how to see myself. And for the reassurance,” Y/N smiled and Sirius couldn’t stop the smile that came upon him too. “Until you tell me you want me to leave, I’m here,” he opened his arms for a hug which Y/N gratefully accepted. Instead of replying, Y/N buried her face in his chest and took a deep breath, letting his cologne flood her senses. She hummed and she gave him an extra tight squeeze as if to say “thank you” before she let go.

The next day, the teens collected their lunches and met up in the forbidden forest. “Alright mates, I recon we eat our lunches and take a look around here before we head to bowtruckle island,” James announced as he stopped in the forest. “Bowtruckle island?” Y/N asked. “Yeah, the library has some of Newt Scamander’s published notes and he mentioned an island on the black lake where branches of bowtruckles live,” James explained. “Wow, you really did your research,” Y/N was nearly floored at the effort he put in to do this for her when they barely knew each other. “Well of course, we want to do this right, don’t we?” he shrugged casually and Y/N dropped it, a sense of belonging beginning to fill her mind.
The group ate their lunches and looked around the forest for a little bit but came up with no bowtruckles, but finding plenty of woodlice to collect and bring to the island, so they decided to head to the lake and summon a row boat. The four boys rowed as Lily and Y/N went over the plan. “So we find one that is less shy than the others but also not agressive, and we bribe them with the woodlice. We build a bond with them by coming back over and over again and then hopefully about halfway through the school year we can bring them back to the castle and start training,” Y/N pondered aloud. “How often do you recon you want to come back?” James asked and he continued to row. “What about every two days?” Y/N asked, worried that might be more often than the rest of them would want to meet up. “We can do every two days, maybe once the bowtruckle starts to trust us more, we can come every day just to strengthen the bond even more before we bring them inside,” Remus suggested. Y/N beamed, “That sounds perfect.”
When the teens arrived to the island they found that there were indeed, branches upon branches of bowtruckles living in the trees. “These trees must be growing wand wood,” Y/N murmured. “Bowtruckles live in wand wood trees to protect them,” she explained. “So we ought ta be careful about pissing them off?” Remus asked. “Not necessarily, they’re very calm creatures. They only attack if they feel their tree is being threatened. Most of them will cower away to watch us from afar but we need to find one that is curious enough to want to check us out and stay visible,” Y/N explained. The group split up into pairs to gently search the island for the perfect bowtruckle. James and Lily, Remus and Peter, and Sirius and Y/N each went their own direction with a pouch full of woodlice.
Each pair searched and searched, but the bowtruckles kept scurrying away to hide. Until Y/N and Sirius stopped to rest and leaned up against a tree that seemed slightly larger than the rest on the island. “You’ve been quiet, are you starting to give up?” Sirius asked quietly. “No, Y/N sighed, “I’m getting a little discouraged but I don’t want to give up. I really want to go through with this and complete Operation Bowtruckle with you guys,” She told him honestly. “Plus, just because we haven’t found anything doesn’t mean no one else has,” She shrugged with hope in her voice. “Y/N/N, I think we’ve hit a stroke of luck, look,” Sirius whispered, pointing to a tree branch slightly overhead where a single Bowtruckle was peeking its head out from the other side.
“Oh, hi there!” Y/N whispered with a grin. She opened her pouch and set five woodlice on the tree branch in front of the bowtruckle as it cowered away until her hand was a safe enough distance from the tree. The bowtruckle returned, fully revealing itself this time and happily munched down the woodlice and looked and Y/N as if expecting more. “Hi there sweet girl,” Y/N murmured. “You want some more?” she asked, reaching into the pouch to pull out more woodlice. The bowtruckle backed away, but did not completely hide itself as Y/N set down the second round of food. “How do you know she’s female?” SIrius asked quietly. “She’s only got two legs. Males have three,” Y/N answered simply, and Sirius couldn’t help but grin and the fact that she just happened to know that off the top of her head.
Sirius and Y/N continued to feed the Bowtruckle until Y/N could get her to climb into her hand to eat the woodlice. “Alright, it’s been a good hour or so, I think we should go find the rest of the group and come back in a few days?” Y/N suggested. “Yeah, that sounds like a good plan. Have you decided what to call her yet?” Sirius asked curiously. “Millicent, I think. Millie for short. How does that sound?” Y/N asked offering the Bowtruckle one more wood louse. Millicent climbed into Y/N hand to eat the last crustacean and seemed to smile contentedly. “I think she likes it,” Sirius’s grinned. Y/N waited for Millicent to return to her tree, said goodbye, and she and Sirius made their way back to the meeting point.
“Y/N we couldn’t find a single bowtruckle that would work,” Peter announced defeatedly as he and Remus returned to the meeting point. “We found a couple curious ones but they wouldn’t let us get close to them,” Lily announced and she and James appeared. “Fear not, Y/N charmed the pants off of one and had her climbing in her hand,” Sirius beamed. “I made note of the tree she lived in so we’ll come back in a couple days and continue our work. Thank you guys so much for coming and helping me with this,” Y/N grinned as she looked at the teens around her. “You’re one of us now, anything you need, we’ve got you,” James slung his arm around Y/N and lead her and the rest of the group back to the boat.

By the time the group returned to the school, it was nearly dinner time and everyone went back to their dorms to freshen up. Once in the great hall, Y/N sat at the end of her table by herself and caught Sirius’s eye from his table across the room and he shot her a wink before going back to his conversation with Remus. She pondered her new friendship with him, or rather, this new chapter in her long-standing friendship with him. Things were just as easy as when they were children, but even easier almost? She felt like she could truly be herself with Sirius, find herself with Sirius. She wondered why it was so easy to breathe around him and why all of his friends were so willing to invite her in and accept her as one of their own. Y/N was taken out of her thoughts as Cynthia, Dawn, and Ellie plopped down around her to eat dinner. “Where were you today?” Dawn asked curiously as she started grabbing food and putting it on her plate. “Oh i just went out to the Forbidden Forest to feed the animals,” Y/N fibbed. She didn’t like lying, but she wanted Operation Bowtruckle to be her secret with Sirius and his friends. “The Forbidden Forest? It’s filthy out there!” Ellie cried, pausing in her own attempt to grab food. “Oh please, it’s not so bad. Plus I like the animals,” Y/N shrugged and began getting food for herself as well. “Well I hope you plan on showering before bringing forest filth in our dorm,” Ellie scrunched up her nose and continued filling her plate. Y/N remembered that she had a role to play with these girls, so she sat up straighter and put on her best smile,” Of course.”
Y/N took her time in the showers, slowly doing her skincare routine and dawdling back to her room. She ran into Remus in the hallway outside her corridor. “I hate to have to say this but it’s almost curfew” he spoke up. “Oh, of course,” Y/N nodded and curtly as she could and sped up toward her common room. “You did a good job today with the Bowtruckle,” he called after her after checking to make sure no one else was around. “Thanks,” Y/N grinned. “We had a lot of fun out there,” Remus told her. “Yeah, I did, too. I’m looking forward to going back again,” she admitted. “This plan is going to work,” Remus assured her. Y/N offered a smile in return and then continued to her common room door and paused before giving the password. “Hey Remus?” she called softly. “Hmm?” He turned back with his eyebrows raised. “Thanks for letting me crash you group,” Y/N said sincerely. Remus grinned in response, “Thanks for crashing.” And with that, they each turned back to their respective directions and continued on with their evenings.
Weeks went by and the teenagers stuck to their plan of visiting Millicent every two days, up until the night the boys backed out and left Y/N and Lily to go alone. “Have I done something? Are they getting bored of my stupid little mission?” Y/N asked aloud, thinking she was alone. Lily, who was approaching while Y/N was pondering aloud answered, “No, love. It’s not you at all, they’re doing a project on the shrieking shack for history of magic tonight.” “We didn’t have an assignment on the shrieking shack, I have that class with Sirius,” Y/N furrowed her brows. “Oh, it’s an extra credit thing. Remus is very interested in the ghosts that live there,” Lily elaborated. “Hmm,” Y/N hummed as she hopped in the row boat, Lily following close behind. “They’ll be back in a couple of days,” Lily assured her.
“A couple of days?!” Y/N asked incredulously. “It’s a um, it’s an immersion thing Remus wanted to do. I dunno, he was just very excited about the haunted past of the place,” Lily shrugged as she rowed. Something smelled fishy to Y/N but she decided to let it go. Lily had been friends with the guys for years- she wouldn’t tell Y/N whatever is really going on if the boys wanted it to be secret. Y/N hummed again and continued to row silently with Lily for a few minutes. To herself, she wondered if the boys really had grown tired of her and if Lily was just here because she felt bad. But then she wondered what they could possibly be doing that would take them out of school for multiple days? Y/N made a note to track down all of the boys separately as soon as they got back to school and see if their answers matched up.
After a successful couple of hours with Millicent, Y/N and Lily rowed back to the school grounds and hid the rowboat before heading their separate ways. “Hey, Y/N!” Lily called from a few feet away. Y/N turned to her. “I promise, they guys are really sorry they missed Operation Bowtruckle tonight. They wanted to be here but they had to do the project now. They’ll tell you all about it when they get back,” Lily smiled. Y/N wanted to believe her so she smiled back. “Goodnight, Lily,” she said. Lily called out a “goodnight!” back and the girls continued to their separate common rooms. Why does it have to be tonight? Y/N wondered. It’s the fifth Friday of the month… It’s a full moon… There are no clouds in the sky… Y/N thought hard about what could possibly be the reason they had to be gone these specific set of days all the way back to her dorm. When she fell asleep, she dreamt of Sirius.
He was in trouble. It was dark, his breathing was labored. Beams of light from the full moon scattered around the dark place he was in. Something howled, and it was very close. Sirius took a deep breath, and then the footsteps could be heard. Getting closer and closer, the beast was snarling. Y/N couldn’t see it but she just knew it was going to get him at any second. She heard its jaws open and felt its body lunging toward Sirius and all of a sudden- a loud “Mroooow,” from Desdemona woke her up.
Y/N sighed deeply, “Good morning pretty girl,” she whispered. Desdemona meowed again. “I suppose you want breakfast?” Y/N asked, stretching and standing up to feed the cat. Y/N observed the room to find all three of her roommates already gone. She checked her watch to find that she had slept until nearly 11 o’clock. As she fed Desdemona and slowly got ready for her day, she couldn’t stop thinking about her dream. About how real it felt, how much danger Sirius was in. She needed to see him. She was going to go into Hogsmeade and go to the shrieking shack to find Sirius and make sure he was okay.
Y/N made her way to the train with a purpose and hurried into Hogsmeade the moment the train stopped. Before she even made it halfway through town, she saw Sirius inside of Honeydukes and rushed inside to him. “Sirius!” She exclaimed, gently grabbing him by the face and inspecting him for injuries, only to find him healthy and handsome as ever. “Uh, hi there, love,” he chuckled, placing his hands over hers and bringing himself to look into Y/N’s eyes. “Something I can help you with, darling?” He asked with a smile. “I just…” Y/N searched and searched for what to say that wouldn’t make her sound crazy. She sighed. “Where have you been?” She asked shyly. “We’re working on a project for history of magic at the shrieking shack for a few days,” he told her, giving her hands a squeeze.
At this, Y/N realized she was making a scene in the window of the shop and she released Sirius’s face from her hands. “How many days?” She raised an eyebrow. “However many it takes to get enough information for our report, I reckon,” Sirius shrugged. “I thought you said it was a project?” she questioned, stepping slightly closer to him. “There’s a report to go with the project,” he replied cooly. Y/N took a step back and examined him one more time, verifying that he seemed to be fine. “Alright. How’s the project going? What’s it about? Why are you at Honeydukes?” she asked, beginning to look around the store for herself.
“It’s going alright, the ghosts can be quite unfriendly at times, and it’s about the past of the shack so we’re spending time with the spirits and learning what they have to say. And I’m at Honeydukes because Remus wanted more chocolate,” Sirius bumped his shoulder against Y/N’s as he held a can of sherbet lemons out to her. She took them, along with a chocolate frog and then let Sirius lead the way. “Well that sounds very interesting, actually. I’d love to read it when you’re done,” Y/N told him. This wasn’t to catch him in a lie- she had no reason not to believe him, and she would love to hear the stories of the ghosts. “Uh, yeah, sure. I’ll give it to you have Professor Binns grades it,” he nodded as he picked out the chocolate Remus requested. The two checked out and Y/N started to follow Sirius out of the store.
“Can I come with you to help over the weekend?” Y/N offered. “Oh! Um, no I think it’s just supposed to be me and the guys on this one but thank you!” Sirius took her hand in his and gave it a gentle squeeze. “Really, thank you,” he said softly. Y/N smiled and squeezed his hand back before letting it go. “I guess I’ll see you when you get back, then,” She said, a hint of disappointment in her voice. “The moment we’re finished I’ll come straight to you. I’ll sneak into your dorm if i have to- just tell me the password to your common room-“ Sirius rambled. “That won’t be necessary,” Y/N laughed, “But I would like to see you again as soon as you get a chance that’s not in the middle of the night.” “Of course. I’ll see you soon. Have a good weekend,” Sirius gave her a beautiful and genuine smile. “You, too,” Y/N told him as they parted ways.
I wondered when the next chapter of Champagne Problems is going to be posted? No rush, I just love your writing!
I’ve started on it but I’m really not sure how long it’ll take me to finish, I’m sorry i don’t have a better answer than that 😞 but i’m so like you like it and i’ll keep working on it🫶🏻
Y/N woke up at 5, allowing herself time to stretch and get ready for the hike. After washing her face, brushing her teeth, and getting dressed, she sent a group message to Sirius and Remus.
“i’m about to leave, you guys better be getting ready”
Y/N made her way to her parents room and knocked on the door before opening it a crack. “I’m headed to pick up Remus and his friend for the hike. We were thinking about going into town to show Sirius around after. Is that okay?” she asked. “I have a luncheon at noon, so I’ll need the car back before then,” Y/M/N replied. Y/F/N sat up in the bed before speaking up. “Have the car back to the house by 11 so your mother has plenty of time to get to her meeting,” he instructed. “Yes, sir,” Y/N nodded. “And be home by 11pm!” he called as Y/N made her way to close the door and exit the house.
Y/N made the short drive to Remus’s house, and sent the boys a text that she had arrived, rather than knocking on the door and waking Remus’s parents. A few moments later, Sirius and Remus appeared at the front door, Sirius with a spring in his step and Remus dragging his feet. “I can’t believe I let you lot talk me into getting up this early,” Remus groaned as he plopped into the passenger seat. “Shut up, we’re gonna have so much fun,” Y/N laughed. “Sirius, are you good to go?” She asked, glancing at him through the rear view mirror. “Let’s go see some dangerous mountain rabbits,” he grinned, earning a huff from Remus and a laugh from Y/N before she put the car in gear and started the drive to the mountain.

“Alright, everyone has water, keep your phones on you in case we get separated,” Y/N began running through her pre-hike checklist. “Yes, it’s early, you have lots of energy and you’re prepared for the apocalypse. Let’s get this over with,” Remus replied. “I’m just making sure our guest is prepared. But if everyone is ready, let’s go!” Y/N nearly leaped off the ground as the three of them made their way to the hiking trail. “Sirius, do you like to hike?” Y/N asked after a few minutes of silence. “I’ve actually never been. My family prefers indoor activities. They like to host dinner parties and go to galas and things like that,” Sirius shrugged.
“Dinner parties and galas?” Y/N raised an eyebrow. “Yeah, Sirius’s family is very wealthy,” Remus told her. “But don’t get excited, they’re assholes and they disowned me so unfortunately I will not be inviting anyone to this summer’s gala because I, myself, am not invited,” Sirius laughed. “Well, fuck ‘em. They sound like assholes,” Y/N shrugged. “You have no idea,” Sirius muttered. “You’d be surprised,” she replied bitterly, more to herself than to Sirius. “So, when will we see the animals that want to eat Remus?” Sirius asked. “Most of the time, the animals don’t come up to the trail, Remus just got lucky that day. But if you’re up for it, I could take you guys to one of my favorite spots that branch off from the trail?” Y/N offered. “Hell yeah!” Sirius exclaimed, looking to Remus. “Y/N if an animal actually eats me, I’m going to come back and ruin your life,” Remus threatened. “Deal,” Y/N grinned, “Follow me, the path is hidden right up here. Just walk slowly and try not to make any noise.”
Not long after they veered off of the trail, Sirius spotted a rabbit and whispered out to Y/N. “Y/N,” he said very quietly. “Very slowly turn back and to the right,” he told her, after snapping a quick picture on his phone. Y/N did as she was told and turned to spot the little bunny looking curiously at her. “Hey, little guy,” she murmured, trying to gauge it’s attitude. She took a very slow step toward it and the rabbit looked at her apprehensively, but didn’t move to flee. “Hey, buddy. You want to try something yummy?” she asked softly, before slowly reaching to her backpack and pulling out a ziplock bag of thinly sliced red bell pepper. “Y/N/N, why do you have a bag of sliced peppers?” Sirius asked as quietly as he could. “She likes to bring treats in case something like this happens and she can try to make a friend,” Remus answered. “Bunnies love bell peppers,” Y/N told them quietly, not taking her eyes off of the bunny.
“Here you go, little friend. Want to try some?” She cooed to the bunny, slowly squatting down so she was closer to the rabbit’s eye level. The bunny stared at her as it twitched it’s nose curiously. “There ya go,” Y/N gently tossed a slice closer to the bunny and it gave a little hop over to the pepper slice before sniffing it. After a moment, the bunny scooted forward a little bit more and began gnawing on the bright red fruit. All three of the teens stayed as still and quiet as they could, and when the bunny was almost finished with its slice, Y/N held out another piece, this time keeping it in her hand to try to get the rabbit to approach her. It took a moment, but the little creature couldn’t resist the treat and it carefully hopped over to her before nervously nibbling in the pepper in her hand. After feeding him a few more slices, Y/N was able to coax the bunny into sitting in her lap and letting her pet him.
“Y/N, you’re a bloody princess. Look at him, he’s enchanted,” Sirius stated in awe at the muggle snuggling a wild bunny. “It’s not enchantment, I wholeheartedly believe you can make anything like you with the right snacks,” Y/N shrugged with a chuckle. “I gave Remus the M&M’s out of my trail mix once and now he comes back to see me every summer.” Sirius laughed out loud as Remus protested, “You know, a little more went into this friendship than just the M&M’s.” “That’s right!” Sirius barked out another laugh, “She also saved your life!” “Ah, yes, we’re all having so much fun laughing at Remus’s expense,” Remus rolled his eyes, but couldn’t hold back the smile beginning to grow on his face.
“Hey Y/N/N, do you think I could get her in my lap?” Sirius asked quietly. Y/N turned her head to look at him, “What did you just call me?” she raised an eyebrow. “Y/N/N. I’ve decided it’s your nickname,” he shrugged. Y/N couldn’t help but smile. “I think I like it,” she told him. “Now come over here very slowly and quietly. once you’re next to me and still, I’m going to give you the peppers and see if she’ll want them enough that she goes to you,” Y/N explained. Sirius followed her instructions and before he knew it, the rabbit was cautiously climbing his leg. “This is so cool someone take a picture for my instagram!” he whispered excitedly.

After the rabbit encounter, the teenagers didn’t have much time left until they needed to leave, so they headed back to where the car was parked. “I’m really bummed that we can’t take you into town today,” Y/N told Sirius, glancing in the rear view mirror to see him. “I could ask my dad about the truck?” Remus offered from the passenger seat. “Worst he can say is no,” he shrugged. “Remus I envy you. Imagine ME asking MY DAD to borrow his truck,” Y/N couldn’t help but crack up at that. “No way,” she laughed. “Is your dad really protective of his truck or summat?” Sirius asked. He’d never been brave enough to ask her about her dad before and this felt like an intimate step to him, but Y/N just chuckled and said, ”Yeah, something like that.”
Y/N dropped the boys off back at Remus’s parents cabin and returned the car to Y/N’s mother at 10:50. By 11:02, there was a honk outside of the house and Y/N peeked out her window to see Remus’s dad’s truck in the driveway. “Remus and Sirius are here, and we’re gonna go into town for the day,” Y/N poked her head into her parents room. “I’ll be home by 11!” she hollered as she made her way to the front door. “I can’t believe your dad is letting you drive this thing!” Y/N exclaimed, climbing in the passenger seat and nudging Sirius over to the middle seat. “‘S just a car,” Remus shrugged with a smile and then pushed Sirius back toward Y/N. “The driver gets personal space,” Remus warned Sirius and Y/N. “Yeah, alright scooch on over here, Sirius. We’re gonna get to know each other a little better while mister sensitive enjoys his personal space,”Y/N instructed. Sirius scooted over until his arm and leg were pressed up against Y/N’s. Y/N’s heart started beating a little bit faster in that moment.
“So are we hungry? Do we want to eat now or later?” Y/N asked as Remus pulled into the town limits. “What do you want to do, love?” Remus asked her. “Well, I could eat right now, but I think I’d rather wait until Tony’s opens at 1. Do you guys want to see a movie and then get food?” Y/N offered. Sirius expected them to go back to Y/N’s house to watch a film, but Remus parked the truck on the side of the street and he and Y/N both got out of the car, so Sirius followed. They made their way down the street to a weird looking building with a double sided sign hanging out front. Y/N went ahead up to the counter while Sirius just stood, in awe of this little town she lived in. “Alright mate, we’re about to go inside and watch a film on the biggest screen you’ve ever seen. This is very normal for muggles so play it cool,” Remus quietly instructed him. “Big film. I’m cool,” Sirius repeated, nodding just as Y/N came back.
“Okay, I was going to see what was playing and take a group consensus but then I found out they’re playing JAWS this week, and I decided for all of us that we HAVE to watch it!” Y/N announced excitedly. “Tickets on me, Remus it’s your turns for snacks,” she said, handing each of the boys their ticket to the movie. “At least you picked a decent one this time,” Remus quipped at her, half hoping she would take the bait. She did. “Decent? DECENT?? Steven Spielberg is an absolute genius. What he did with this movie, and so many other movies is-“ Y/N was ready to keep going but Sirius cut her off. “Who is Steven Spielberg? Is he meeting up with us today too?” Sirius asked, Y/N laughed out loud, and Sirius wanted to know what he could do to get her to make that sound again. He really thought she sounded like an angel. “Steven Spielberg is the director of the movie, Sirius. You’re not big into movies are you?” she asked with another laugh. Sirius could only shake his head. He was entranced by her. “We’ll make a movie buff out of you, yet. Someday, you’ll be as snobby as Remus,” she grinned, nudging Remus with her elbow. “Let’s just get inside,” Remus chuckled, rolling his eyes.
Once inside, Remus bought his own snacks and offered to buy Y/N’s and Sirius’s but Sirius insisted on paying for Y/N’s snacks because “she bought his ticket and it was only fair he return the favor.” They settled on sharing a popcorn and a soda and each getting a candy, and then made their way to the theater. Y/N sat between the boys, holding the popcorn in her lap so it was accessible to everyone. Shortly after the teens got settled in their seats, the movie started. As the movie started, everyone dug into their snacks, Y/N and Sirius’s hands innocently grazing against one another. Shy glances passed between the two, unbeknownst to Remus who was immediately engrossed in the movie. At one jump scare, Y/N instinctively grasped Sirius’s hand, and he held onto hers tightly as well. Their fingers stayed intertwined through the rest of the movie.
“Okay that movie was great!” Sirius exclaimed as he burst through the doors out of the theater to the street. “I need a picture of this place for my instagram!” he decided, snapping a picture and posting it immediately.

“Y/N, who’s this person calling me “king” and why do I have a bunch of new followers?” Sirius asked as he put his phone away. “My friends probably saw you tag me in that post by the lake and followed you from there. That’s my friend Y/F/N from school, she’s really nice. she’ll hype up all of your posts,” Y/N laughed. “Ah yes, classic Y/F/N,” Remus mused. “Just because she thinks we’re in love doesn’t mean she’s not nice,” Y/N playfully rolled her eyes. “Oh,” Sirius raised an eyebrow. “None of my friends at school have guy friends as close as Remus and I so it’s a little difficult for them to understand our dynamic. But we no offense, I could never picture myself in love with you,” Y/N laughed, nudging Remus. “No offense taken because I feel the exact same way,” Remus grinned sarcastically before Y/N perked up. “Let’s go to Tony’s and get some pasta!” She exclaimed, grabbing both of the boys’ hands and pulling them toward the Italian restaurant.
