My Own Private Idaho (1991) dir. Gus Van Sant
My Own Private Idaho is a film about two male sex workers: Scott (played by Keanu Reeves) who comes from a wealthy family but chooses to be a sex worker to piss them off and Mike (played by River Phoenix) who comes from nothing and has no choice. In one heartfelt scene, Mike confesses to Scott that he has fallen in love with him. However, Scott responds that he is heterosexual and can’t return his love. At an impasse, Scott opens his arms to Mike and holds him for the night. In real life, Keanu and River were extremely close friends and River had written this scene for them himself on little scraps of paper. The director enjoyed how raw it felt so much that he decided to put it in the movie.
