i have nothing against modernized alternative styles and partake in some myself. but i find it really odd and interesting how goth makeup has shifted to be so much more conventional and in specific boxes, so much so that people who do more traditional and non-conventional goth makeup are told that their style isn't goth enough or goth at all.

"where are your facial piercings?" "why don't you have thin eyebrows?" "why are you wearing so much color?" "where's your sharp eyeliner?" "why isn't your hair dyed?" "why aren't you wearing all black?"

if that's your strict criteria for what goth is, i strongly believe that siouxsie sioux herself could walk into the room and if you didn't recognize her, you'd say she isn't goth enough. of course those things can contribute to goth fashion but they don't make it and siouxsie sioux herself had almost none of it! no piercings, super thick and rounded brows, colored eyeshadow, often slightly rounded eyeliner or soft eyeliner blended into eyeshadow or no eyeliner, colorful lips (pink, red, purpleish, shiny, etc), colorful nails and clothes...

a lot of the fashion of the literal pioneers of goth fashion would either be called not goth or would be rejected for being corny (like fishnet tops and studded bracelets that people hate nowadays).

and obviously part of being alternative is rejecting these criticisms of our fashion so it's not like i care what people think of what we wear, but it gets to a point when even alternative people who are acting like they're against the gentrified versions of our fashion are rejecting the cores of our culture and telling each other to wear more modernized, conventional versions of the fashion. and the word "traditional" has just been thrown around for stuff that looks nothing like traditional goth.

i used to be scared to talk about this headcanon because the transmasc peter parker headcanon was so popular that i used to get called out for "misgendering" him by using she/her pronouns for her back in the day, like 2016-2018 😭😭😭 both headcanons are good but i'm just glad we're far past that phase where everybody viewed tmasc peter as canon so much so that people weren't allowed to like tfem petra/penny 😭

(this post is not showing up in tags or searches because i say the word rape in the tags but im not changing it, its just a rant, idrc if people see it) i guess i should talk about the jean grey/mj/peter kiss in bnd, and i'll be literally the first person ever to acknowledge its nuances 😭 i think a lot of people are incapable of acknowledging nuance when it comes to FICTIONAL sexual assault, and like it's totally fine if it's a sensitive topic for you that makes it hard to see beyond just "sa=evil" but at that point you have to acknowledge that the nuances are beyond you and your takes on it won't necessarily be accurate/unbiased.

is it technically sexual assault, kissing someone while making them think you're someone else and making someones body kiss that person without their knowledge? yeah. is it really bad? obviously. were her intentions sexual in any way, and was she attempting to violate him or her in that way intentionally? no, not at all, in fact she spells out her motivations immediately-

"some people would kill to hold their loved ones one last time." she's making a point- giving peter that moment with mj and then taking it away just like the dodc did to her with her sister, and then making the point that peter is preventing her from seeing her sister again. she's torturing him the way HE'S torturing HER by working with human traffickers to prevent her from rescuing her sister from them. she is intentionally being cruel to prove a point and to intimidate him out of stopping her from finding her sister, but there's also a legitimate (albeit warped) thought behind what she says here- like in a sad, twisted, grief-motivated way, she sees giving him this moment as a mercy and doesn't fully understand why he wouldn't appreciate having that moment with "mj." at least some part of this is that she essentially thinks she did him a favor by threatening her and therefore bringing peter to her, and with that, also trying to prove a point that getting back the person you love isn't always a clean, moral process, like a warped attempt to justify the collateral damage she's left behind trying to find her sister.

does that justify it in any way? no, duh, obviously not. it just means that she's not irredeemable, it's not something she'd have done under normal circumstances, she can be better, and the action wasn't nearly as random as people seem to think it is because it being sa makes them completely ignore all context in a fashion they don't even do for murder.

and y'know what, i'll keep bringing this up- the whole reason that what jean did here was bad is because it was a violation of their autonomy and she did something to mj's body while she wasn't in it, and mind you peter grabs mj by the throat a minute after this and holds her over a fucking building. and like a few scenes later we have mj angry at peter for violating her autonomy and making choices on her behalf despite her wishes. bro tells her that they kissed when mj wasn't in her body but he proceeded NOT to tell her he almost fucking killed her himself a moment after 😭

all the themes and reasons are RIGHT THERE and you can see them if you set aside your biases for a second. the movie is critiquing peter as much as it is jean grey and peter is literally LEARNING here why it's not okay to make choices for other people, that's the point.

i despise the term "female coded character" in the way it's been used online. i don't know how this term began but i'm assuming it can only properly be used on characters who don't have sexes or genders- mainly aliens or robots i would assume ???

like the steven universe gems who are sexless aliens but use feminine pronouns and feminine terms like "mom", most of them have very "female coded" bodies with boobs, they never specify their gender identity but we assume based on this that they likely would identify as women

your favorite male character is not "female coded" just because you think he's pretty. tsukasa tenma is not "female coded." dick grayson is not "female coded." tony stark is not "female coded." will byers is not "female coded." they're just men, who i assume may be written with traits that MAY be considered stereotypically feminine.

random thought: i do think the power scaling community is dumb- power scaling isn't inherently dumb to me tbh because overanalyzing characters for fun is like... what fandom is all about. but usually people only do it to prove their favorite character is better even if they have to lie or exaggerate to do it (plus a lot of the community is unshockingly misogynistic) and i'm a strong believer in the fact that the best characters have flaws and don't necessarily have to be the strongest to be the best, so i usually end up disagreeing with my own fandoms when it comes to power scaling.

i think it's especially silly when it comes to the spider-man fandom comparing the strengths of the different live action spider-men 🫣 you can make as many points as you want about the end of no way home where tobey blocks tom's hit- about the angle, the force, the position, etc- but it's really just people who prefer tobey's movies arguing that his spider-man is stronger and people who prefer tom's movies arguing that his spider-man is stronger. guess i'll be the first tom holland fan to say, i actually really prefer the idea that tobey's is stronger because he's older, more experienced, and in a better place in his life. it's just cooler that way and kind of cements in the heartfelt lessons the older peters are teaching the younger peter.

i don't care what anyone else thinks either way and again there's nothing wrong with having an opinion and overanalyzing. i just think it's silly how a lot of people act like they need their favorite character to be the most objectively perfect and strong, when that's not what makes a good character. if you don't have flaws, you don't have a good character.

i can't believe people are MAD that mj read the letter peter left behind as if peter didn't literally leave a note to mj on frank's kitchen fucking table, and her first question was "did you want me to find it?" BECAUSE SHE THOUGHT HE LEFT IT FOR HER TO READ, AS A NORMAL PERSON WOULD ASSUME AFTER FINDING A NOTE TO THEM LEFT BY THE PERSON WHO BROUGHT THEM WHERE IT WAS LEFT. this is how you know misogynists don't have any basic comprehension skills, they just like to call women bitches for fun. they can't even be bothered to pay the slightest bit of attention to the movie because they literally have a scene where peter leaves the note right on the table and my first thought was "that's gonna have consequences" 😭 he left. it. on. the. table.

people also ignore how badly he hurt her by having doctor strange do that spell and not coming to her after.

towards the start of no way home after they fucked up the original spell that he tried to do without telling ned or mj first, mj tells peter "next time you're going to do something like this, you can come to us and we can help you make a plan first" and he says "okay" yet next time, he does the second spell without telling her first and shoots her down when she says there must be something else they can do- this is forgivable obviously because he didn't have much of a choice but to go fast and fix things- but then he also promises to come and tell her everything, and doesn't- again going against her explicit wishes and his own promise, he lets her live four+ years of her life knowing in her heart that she's missing something but not knowing what it is. worse, she said "i love you" for the first time before he left her and told him to say it back when he saw her again, and he didn't- so she spent four years waiting for an "i love you" that she didn't get until it was too late.

OBVIOUSLY as the audience, we fully understand why he does this- he's making a selfless choice because he knows his aunt died because she knew him and mj already got hurt and almost died because of him- but these things can and will be contradictory because it's a selfish choice too and we have to understand that peter parker isn't the only individual in these movies with his own motivations, reasons, and thoughts 😭 in no way home, mj knew that her boyfriend was continually goodhearted but reckless and not really listening to her, not keeping promises. in brand new day, ALL she knows is that she loved someone, he got her memories of him erased, and he never told her. it's hurtful and while he WAS trying to protect her and thinking about her safety, it's still selfish because he WASN'T thinking about her feelings, the promises he was breaking, or how the spell would actually affect her since we now know that even while not remembering him, she's subconsciously been waiting for him and feeling that emptiness in her life.

and that's not even getting into ned and how he was SO sure that peter would keep his promise ("i know you will 🥺" UGH) and he DIDN'TTTTTTTT 😭 his best freaking friend truly believed in him and was proven wrong.

alright here's a hot spider-man take- i always see people shitting on the mj of the raimi movies, including people who would normally be on the side of defending female characters like that, and i genuinely don't understand the hate for her. i used to think i did, but i don't.

there are a couple issues with her writing (but no more than for any character, really), like-

i don't love that they made disloyalty an mj character trait. as far as i know from what comics i've read, mj was never disloyal and PETER was the one who could veer into that territory from time to time so i don't like them switching that to make the woman worse. it's not that i can't handle some fictional cheating/disloyalty, but making it so consistent for a character like mj is annoying- comic mj has always been the independent type, she wouldn't need to tie herself to a man so much that her relationships consistently overlap. however, if i separate that grudge over the comic differences, i don't actually mind this trait for her in these movies and all the instances make total sense in their separate contexts 😭 mary jane is clearly a woman who grew up being invalidated by the men in her life, having an abusive father, so it's not surprising that she would fall into bad relationships with men who don't treat her well, then fall head over heels for a man (peter) who shows her true care and kindness, then look for that kindness in another man when peter rejects her, and then finally commit herself fully to peter after realizing she can be her own person and make her own choices.

i dislike the damsel in distress trope so yeah, watching her be lorded over peter's head every hour is annoying. even this isn't taken too far though- when given the chance, she gets up and tries to fuck up doc ock herself- obviously she fails because he's wearing a powered suit with giant mechanical arms and she's a regular human woman, but she's not shown to be completely helpless. any other regular human man would've failed there too.

and mj watson should always be a bit of an off-putting weirdo, she talks so funny and uses so much dorky slang in the comics and gets away with it because she's very charming. raimi mj wasn't weird or silly enough unfortunately.

that's really all i can think of ??? her character is genuinely pretty great. the scene where she thinks he's about to make fun of her wanting to be an actress because every other man in her life has belittled her life choices, and he praises her and talks about her childhood performances that he loved 🙁 and it has to be relevant that he specifically mentioned cinderella, a story about a young girl escaping her condescending and abusive family and finding love... it's one of the best scenes in those movies if not the best, right beside the upside down kiss, the sm3 ending, and her finding out that he's spider-man. yeah, yeah, mj is the best part of those movies, idc idc! i'm standing on business!

i don't know why people are always saying peter deserved better than a cheater when peter was a cheater too!!! he cheated on her right in her face and then tried to propose to her after without even thinking about how she'd feel because he was getting too arrogant!!! same argument for when people say she was annoying for being jealous of him in sm3 but like she wasn't just jealous of his accomplishments, she was upset because he was getting overly cocky (literally lead to him cheating on her) and inconsiderate of her feelings. AND people who say she was leading him on are completely misremembering because he's the one that rejected her and kept switching up on her, rejecting her then wanting her back then rejecting her and wanting her back again!!!

like i want to say it's mostly misogyny that makes everyone hate her so much but i can't even tell at this point because i hear the same takes from people who are usually SO anti-misogyny 😭

i'm not necessarily disagreeing that the mcu, modern mcu especially, has a lack of sexuality but i find it interesting how people are comparing the "horniness" of tom holland's spider-man relationship to tobey macguire and andrew garflield, and people are saying mcu mj and peter simply aren't horny for each other... but it's not really true ??? like obviously there wasn't a lot of sexuality in the home trilogy, especially with them being minors, but we have scenes like...

peter changing and mj being reluctant to turn around, and then "subtly" trying to look back and sneak a little peak at his body 😭 it's not a sexy scene but it's appropriately awkward because they're 16 here

and a lot more sex jokes in the home trilogy than i recall there ever being in the other spider-man movies. ned saying he was watching porn, peter sneaking an adult film in his hotel room and happy teasing him, may and happy thinking mj and peter were having sex because they were caught with peter changing right in front of her (and i'll point out that this is when they're already dating and it contrasts the awkward ffh scene because he just straight up takes the spider-man suit off with no hesitation in front of her and she keeps holding him. i know they had other shit to worry about right then but i'd say it more or less implies that they were comfortable that way by that point, probably not having sex but doing something)

dare i say, it was actually a pretty appropriate way to show sexuality and sexual attraction in teenagers without actively sexualizing them and/or messing up the movies' ratings

also, they slut out tom holland in his movies way more than they did for the other actors 😭 i made my best friend watch the andrew garfield movies months ago and she saw his one shirtless scene and asked "when do i see him shirtless again?" and i said "you don't, tom holland is the only one they slut out like that" 😭 because he's shirtless in every movie, and now he's especcccccially (half-)naked in brand new day lol

i don't know how to describe it but i really love the line delivery of peter saying "that i... love you..." like! he really sounds like a 22 year old man, who's kind of embarrassed and dejected saying this and knows he's never actually going to read it to her.

i don't know, tom holland did a good job acting the character's age throughout the whole movie but this delivery really sold it for me for some reason. it's exactly how i would picture comic spiderman's voice and inflections too

we all know that i'm an irondad fanatic but i just HAVEEEE to point out that people keep posting the scene of peter literally putting himself in AUNT MAY'S position while jean grey is in peter's position, and peter is also taking on the role that jean's sister sara was meant to play for jean, and then saying "peter is jean grey's tony" and it's kind of killing me, i can't lie.

i don't think it's wrong to draw parallels, in fact i think it was probably intentional that the conversations with peter and tony, peter and may, jean and sara, and peter and jean are framed in a similar way and sort of build off each other (pretend i put other screenshots in this bro i couldn't find a single brand new day pic of those specific scenes, i'll put them in when we get quality screenshots. edit: some terrible quality screenshots here, you're welcome)

but it just shows how much fandoms will zero in on male characters even when female characters are the most central and important. you literally ignore all the points the movie is making right in front of your eyes to bring a man into it. peter is teaching jean what MAY taught him, and jean is seeing HER SISTER in peter/may.

i think it's also worth noting that peter got a year to process tony's death during a decent time in his life where he had his aunt, his classmates, his best friend, and his girlfriend, while he had like half a day to process his grief over may with his friend and girlfriend before he was left alone for the next four years to repress his feelings. he's like... JUST NOW processing may's death and fully understanding the lessons she taught him. again, nothing wrong with pointing out the presence of his grief for tony too, but may is worth focusing on right now more than anything else 💔 this is about MAY

one of my favorite details in brand new day that i haven't seen anyone point out is that peter's mutation isn't just making him more spider, it's making him less human 😭 it sounds obvious but his inhibitor isn't just taking stuff away, it's also giving something back.

jean grey doesn't have any confirmed kills in the movie but i'm gonna be real with you all, even if she HAD killed people (civilians AND/OR metzger, i couldn't gaf) , i would still be rooting for her 🤷‍♀️ like you're watching a movie about a guy who, when he was closer to her age, tried to murder a sick, innocent man for something "he" or essentially someone else in his body did while he wasn't in his own mind. and you're seeing a young girl, who doesn't even have any of the support from friends that he did at the time, whose current arc is a reflection of his past one. and you're MAD? you're mad that she's violent and murderous just like he was? why are you still watching spider-man movies if that kind of grief-driven violence is too scandalous for you?
