Tips For Filing Your Own Taxes

Filing your taxes on your own this year? We've got you covered! Read below for our tips on independently filing your taxes, and good luck!

1. Get Organized

The IRS is nothing if not meticulously organized. You’ll save yourself a lot of time if you make sure you have everything you need before you sit down to tackle your taxes (you can use a checklist to help determine what information you’ll need).

You should have received your W-2 by now from each place of work you received a salary from. Your W-2 includes how much money you made, as well as the amount of taxes that were withheld. If you’re an independent contractor, you will receive a 1099 instead. Keep in mind that 1099’s only include the money you made without withholdings, so you’ll need to figure out how much you owe in taxes. If you have any income that needs to be included on your tax return but you didn't receive a form for it (like freelance work), you’ll want to track down those records as well.

Other forms you may receive include interest or investment earnings from your bank, student loan interest, or records of contribution to an IRA. You can also comb through your receipts, credit card statements, bank statements, and checkbook and make a list of payments that might be deductible. 

2. Figure out how to file

Don’t just default to filing the way you did last year. Many life events, such as marriage, divorce, having a child, graduating from college, or taking in an elderly parent may indicate a change in your filing status. 

Many taxpayers use software to complete and file their returns (e.g. TaxACT, Turbotax), or you can consult an accountant if you’d like more personal help. 

3. Don’t overlook deductions

Many taxpayers end up leaving money on the table due to deductions that were overlooked. It’s generally a good idea to run the numbers on your tax return twice to make sure you didn't leave anything out, and brush up on common deductions and tax credits (a deduction will reduce your taxable income; a credit will reduce your tax liability). 

Some common deductions/credits include: local and state sales taxes, charitable contributions paid via payroll deductions, child and dependent care credit, job search expenses, and earned income tax credit. 

4. File on time (or get an extension)

Make sure you leave yourself plenty of time before the April 15th deadline to file your taxes, allowing extra time just in case you run into any problems. To be considered as filed on time, a paper return must be postmarked by the end of the day on April 15th. If you’re filing online, your return is not considered filed until the IRS acknowledges acceptance of the electronic portion of the tax return, so allow yourself an extra day or two to make sure your return is accepted.

If you need more time, file for an extension. 

5. Plan for next year

Now that you've gone through the process, keep track of the records you need for when you file. If you use tax software or an accountant, both will offer you the opportunity to do some planning for the following year. This is also a good time to make some adjustments; if you received a large refund, you may want to consider tweaking your W-2 so you get more money back with each paycheck, instead of all at once. If you owed a lot in taxes, you may want to increase your holdings on your W-2.

Bill Payment 101

When it comes to finances, figuring out how to pay your bills and stay organized is a top priority. With all the different options out there, it can be a little overwhelming trying to figure out which approach is best for you and your family. 

Well, we’re here to help. 

Below we have outlined the primary ways to pay your bills, along with the pros and cons for each option. Whichever option you end up using (we’d love to have you join the Prism family!), we hope it helps minimize the stress of paying bills so you can spend your time doing the things you love.

Checks:

Believe it or not, there are tons of people who still pay their bills by writing a check. While checks are almost universally accepted by billers, the process is slow and asynchronous. It takes several days for the check to arrive at the biller and then several more days for the funds to be withdrawn from your account and actually posted with the biller. Because of this, you need to send the check with enough lead-time to make it to the biller by the due date. You also need to be sure that you’re balancing your check book on a regular basis so you know how much money you actually have; it’s easy to forget about a check you wrote, and keeping a ledger will account for that check so you don’t accidentally spend those funds before the check has been withdrawn from your account.

Online Billpay:

With online bill pay, you login to your bank’s website and add billers to pay. The payment can process overnight if electronic payment is possible, but it can also be as slow as mailing a check if the biller does not support electronic payments. The benefit of paying through your bank, though, is that the available balance in your account will instantly reflect the payments you made, so you don’t run the risk of accidentally spending that money.

If the biller you add with your bank does not support e-statements (most don’t), you likely won’t see your actual statement when paying and will have to determine how much you owe using your paper statement or the biller’s website. Also, beware that some banks charge fees or require minimum balances to use online billpay.

Biller Websites:

When you pay directly on the biller’s website, you login with a username/password specific to that biller and pay through their site. The benefit here is that your payment is credited almost instantaneously. You can also view all your bill information so you know exactly what you need to pay. Many billers also accept credit and debit cards as a form of payment on their sites, in addition to checking and savings accounts, which provides much-needed flexibility for many customers.

The downside with going to each individual biller website is that you have to remember a lot of passwords (it is not secure and often not possible to use the same password on every site). The websites also are often poorly designed and a hassle to use, and you have to remember to visit them every month or so.

Electronic Payment Networks and Most Bill Pay Apps (e.g. Plastiq, MyCheckFree, Western Union):

The process of paying with an electronic payment network (and apps that use a third party) is very similar to using online billpay through your bank. There are many electronic payment networks online, as well as many pay-in-person kiosks. The downside is that this form of payment almost always involves fees, there is typically a processing delay, and you still need to determine on your own how much you owe.

Prism:

Prism is a mobile app that combines the best of all worlds: the all-in-one place nature of online payment, the instant and flexible benefits of biller websites, and a beautiful mobile app. The app is completely free and keeps all of your bills in one place. Since Prism does not use a third party payment processor, payments made through the app are always processed same-day, and in most cases the biller will credit payment instantly. You can pay with any bank account or credit card that the biller accepts, and you can also check your account balances directly in the app. Prism will notify you when your bill becomes available, the day before it’s due, and on the due date so you don’t have to remember when each bill is due. Similarly, once you input your login information for each biller, you won’t have to do it again, so you no longer have to remember multiple passwords.

iOS Home Screen Tour

We are so excited that the new home screen experience is live on iOS, and we hope you've been enjoying it so far! Since you've had a few days now to play around with it and get acquainted, I thought I'd give you a more formal introduction.

We moved news to its own section so we can show you all of your available bills (and paydays!) on the home screen. If you want to read the news, simply bring up the menu and tap on “news”. Your bills are listed in the order in which they’re due, with the bills due soonest at the top.

You will see that each different bill has its own color; that color corresponds to the income bar at the top of your screen, showing just how much of your income is taken up by that particular bill. This gives you a deeper level of visibility into your finances, so you can see how much of your income is spoken for by your bills, or when things are getting tight.

When you tap on one of your bills, you will see the same information you’re used to (due date and amount due), along with a slider bar. You can use the slider function to see how paying more or less on your bill will affect your total income for the month, as well as set the amount you’re actually going to pay.

We hope the new experience gives you an even greater sense of control over your finances. We’re really proud of this update, and we think you’ll absolutely love it. New Experience Live on iOS!

Financial Resolutions (& apps to help you stick with 'em)

Every time a new year rolls around, my sister and I get together and write out our resolutions for the year to come. I love this tradition, and I always look forward to it. It’s a wonderful way to reflect on the previous year; to celebrate the successes and figure out what I could have done better for the things I wanted to accomplish but didn’t. This year I did something different, and for every resolution I made, I downloaded an app to help me accomplish my goal. I love that every time I unlock my phone, there’s an app staring back at me reminding me of what I set out to do in 2015. And since resolutions have often fizzled out by February, I thought now would be a good time to bring them up again.

It’s no surprise that financial resolutions top the list for many people; from trying to save more, pay down debt, or simply stop spending frivolously, there’s an app for that! I’ve compiled a list of common financial resolutions as well as the apps that can help. I hope this helps you accomplish all the goals you set for yourself, and here’s to a very happy 2015!

Resolution: This year, I will pay down my debt.

App: Debt Free (iOS; $0.99). Debt Free helps you pay down your debt using the debt snowball method, which involves focusing on one debt to pay off while making the minimum payments toward your other debts. It presents you with a quick summary of your total debts with percentage progress bar, projected debt free date, interest savings, and early payoff date. It also includes percent-paid progress bars for each debt, which motivates you towards paying off your debts. You can track multiple debts, select the payoff strategy you want to use, and track your payments.

Resolution: This year, I will get on top of my spending.

App: Level Money (iOS, Android; free). Level is a simple, no-frills budgeting app that syncs with your credit card and bank accounts to show you how much money you can afford to spend on any given day, week, and month. It estimates your income, detects your fixed expenses, and allows you to set a percentage of your income to savings so it can create a daily budget for you out of your overall spending pattern.

Resolution: This year, I will save more money.

App: You Need A Budget (iOS, Android; free). You Need A Budget is a great budgeting tool that allows you to track your spending in a clean, easy-to-understand interface. You can easily track your expenses, and the app provides tools for you to evaluate your spending and identify any places your money is going that you didn’t budget for. It keeps you aware of your spending so you can stay within your budget and keep your savings in savings.

Resolution: This year, I will get control of my bills.

App: Prism [because obviously] (iOS, Android, Windows Phone, Windows 8; free). Prism allows you to manage and pay your bills, presenting the information in an intuitive, beautiful interface. Add your billers in the app, and Prism will show you your due date, amount due, and warn you if anything seems amiss. You can then pay your bill directly through the app. The app will remind you when your bills are due, so gone are the days of paying late fees. And since all of your bills are kept in one place, you no longer need to juggle all your billers’ websites.

Resolution: This year, I will protect my credit.

App: Bill Guard (iOS, Android; free). Bill Guard provides one central location for all your accounts, where you monitor all of your transactions and protect your cards from fraud and errors. The app shows you all of your transactions, and you can swipe to either verify or flag new charges, and it will also alert you if your card is used in an atypical location. If you notice an unfair charge, you can get your money back with a few steps in the app.

Financial Tips for Millennials

There is a ton of financial information out there with tips and advice on how to manage your money, but oftentimes it’s too broad or general to really apply. We have a lot of millennials who use our app (and we ourselves are a team made up of millennials), so it seemed to make sense to put together some financial tips specific to the millennial crowd. Of course these tips are important for everyone, but they are especially critical for Generation Y’ers.

Pay attention to your credit score. It’s important to know what factors go into your credit score. Even if you aren't planning on making a large purchase in the near term (car, house, etc), what you do now has a direct effect on what you can qualify for further down the road. Educate yourself and make sure that you know what actions impact your score. For example, many people will close credit cards that were opened earlier on once they’re paid off, but that can actually have a negative impact on your score because it wipes away some of your credit and reduces your total available credit, both of which factor into your FICO score.

Get in the habit of saving. It doesn’t have to be a lot, but one of the best things younger people can do is get in the habit of saving money. Maybe that means saving just $20 from each paycheck -- the point is that it forms the habit. A great way to start saving is to have a portion of each paycheck automatically transfer to a savings account. If the process is automated, you don’t have a chance to spend it in the first place. The second part of this is not to touch your savings; let the account grow, and only use it if you actually need to.

Understand your student loans. Many people graduate college and start aggressively paying down their student loans, which is great; just be sure you know how this debt compares to your other debt. If you have credit cards, the interest rate on your cards is likely much higher than the interest rate on your student loan. If you can pay down one of your debts aggressively, it would make more sense in this case to pay the minimum on your student loan and aggressively pay down your credit card. Also keep in mind that student loans are widely considered “good” debt, while credit cards especially are “bad” debt.

Be careful about the big monthly expenses. Car leases and rent/mortgages can seem affordable initially, but cutting back a bit can save lots and lots of money each month.

Once you move into a house, be sure to budget for the maintenance expenses and property taxes. They can be a big surprise if you’ve been renting until now. It’s a big mistake to assume that an affordable rent equals an affordable mortgage; do your homework, and make sure you’re comfortable with the financial commitment once you’ve added in everything.

Android Update

Hey Android users, there’s a new update available for you! Here’s what you can expect in Android 2.1:

The ability to schedule a payment after the due date. Many of you have requested this feature, and we’re happy to announce that you can now schedule a payment for up to 7 days after the due date. Just be sure to use caution when you schedule a payment after the due date – some billers may charge late fees or penalties for doing so (we’ll warn you of this when you schedule the payment, as well as on the actual bill).

Save payment selections. We will now save any adjustments you make to your bills (payment amount, payment date, and payment account) for later use. This means that if you exit a bill without pulling down to pay, any adjustments you made will be saved for when you go back to it. If you adjust the date, we’ll remind you on the date you selected that you have a bill to pay.

Show full bill amount on homescreen. If you pay the full amount on your bills (as opposed to the minimum amount due), we will start showing that amount on the homescreen and upcoming bills screen. If you pay less than the full amount due, you will still see the minimum amount reflected on the summary screens.

Add paydays. You can now add your payday in the app, and we will notify you on the days you get paid. Simply bring up the main menu, then tap on "your paydays" to get started.

We have also put the finishing touches on the new experience, and we are rolling it out over the next few weeks. We are so excited to get this out to you, and we hope you love the update!

We now fully support the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus screen resolutions, making your Prism experience a more beautiful one. We also added support for Touch ID on iPhone 5S, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus, which you can enable in addition to your PIN.
