The calming posters lining the walls seemed to mock them. “I’m not comfortable in this situation,” the hero said, scanning the room for the nearest exit. “This isn’t a safe environment.”

“What makes you say that?”

“Villain kidnapped me! They forced me to come here against my will.” The right words came to them in a flash. “I did not consent to this.”

The therapist turned to Villain, a disappointed look coming over their face. “Villain, is this true? We talked about this in our last session. This only works if you are both willing to put in the time. Consent is very important in nemesis therapy.”

He’s that type of person who’s REALLY awkward when it comes to “lovey-dovey” things, simply because it’s icky and he isn’t used to expressing feelings other than… well, aloofness!

1) “You’re just so bloody goofy,” she said. She meant it as a compliment. “You and your stupid hair.” Read; you and your perfect hair, and your adorable way of running your fingers through it when you’re nervous. Read; bright ball of sunshine, you light up my world and make my chest light, make me laugh like nothing else you. The look on his face was utterly wounded.

2) “I don’t expect you to feel the same way-” she began.  “Oh thank god.” She both froze.  Her best friend froze, before their eyes widened. “Not as in oh thank god I hate that you love me! I mean thank god-” “Who said anything about love,” she bristled. “I mean I love you!”  They both froze all over again.  Their best friend stood up and walked out. “We’re doing this again, don’t move.”

3) “You’re the most brilliant person I’ve ever met,” he said. And it was such a difference to his normal impassiveness in the face of everything that her insides flipped. He swallowed hard, cheeks burning even as he tried really hard to maintain his cool and confident demeanour. His hands twisted in front of him, nervously. He wet his lips. “God,” his voice cracked and he looked down. “If you knew how much I loved you…” He couldn’t do this. He stumbled back a step, flustered all over. She took a step forward and caught his wrist to stop him, before the touch gentled. “Tell me.” 

4) Their relationship had all but fallen apart. Every time she tried to say how she felt, she seemed to only make things worse because she’d get awkward in the last second and flub out and say something cruel so it wasn’t too mushy. So, in the end, she kept her goddamn mouth shut and simply wrote three words on a piece of paper, shoved them against his chest and bolted.

6) “We could never work out,” he said, talking all the reasons it would be a terrible idea because that would make the ‘I love you’ bursting in his mouth less frightening. “I’d only hurt you.” She looked at him, utterly unimpressed. “Wow. You really need to work on your love confessions and grow the fuck up.”

Tropes And Prompts That I Wish To See More Of In Fanfiction

Enemies to lovers, coffee shop AU’s, “there is only one bed oh my whatever shall we do”. These tropes are all great! But what about the tales that are hardly told on AO3? What about the underused tropes?

-To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before AU: For those of you who don’t know the Netflix rom-com “To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before”, the basic plot is this (It’s been a while since I saw it, so everything I say to you might be lies. Also, if you do not care about the plot of To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before, feel free to skip ahead):

There’s this hopeless romantic girl, right? And somehow, no one will date her, despite her being gorgeous and funny and smart and sweet and having a room like a magazine photo (and her bed is in the middle of the room?? Every teenager I know has their bed against at least two walls, it’s common sense). Standard teen movie stuff. 

Instead of talking to guys she likes, she’ll write out detailed letters confessing her feelings to them. It’s a diary thing, I suppose. She also writes down their addresses on the letters. Where is she getting the addresses? Why is she writing them down? She never planned to mail them. Why are you the way you are, Laura Jean?

Anyway, wacky hijnks ensue and (le gasp) all five of the letters are sent. Somehow, this merely leads to a love triangle, where the proper thing would be a love pentagon, but whatever. There are no sword fights in this movie.

Anyway.

That was a roundabout way of saying why is that not a fanfic trope? There are enough fandom bicycles with several ships that this would work perfectly for! It’s a good way to add some drama to a high school AU.

-This isn’t a trope really, but Weddings: Once your OTP have trecked through the angst, skipped through the fluff, and settled into their domestic fics, what would the wedding be like? Weddings are really fun from a writing standpoint. You want drama? Emotion? Cute couple antics? Wacky best man and/or maid of honor shenanigans? First dances going well? First dances NOT going well? That one family member that shows up that no one wants there because they’re a reminder of when your grandfather split the family in half and caused quite a bit of psychological damage to 90% of the guests (that might be more of a specific problem with my relatives)? Let them get married!!!

-While in high school AUs, don’t neglect the drama club: The school musical is actually a great framing device for a story! It’ll be a common thing the characters are all striving for, a way to bring them together, a big final event for the finale, and, of course, no one can do drama like the theater kids. There’s so much to do here!

-On that note, D&D club will do a similar thing: Bonus points if actual paranormal activity starts happening and they have to become the heroes they pretended to be (and actually are in canon?).

-MASQUERADES: MASQUERADES ARE AMAZING. THE AESTHETIC. THE DRAMA. THE STYLE. CHOCK FULL OF PREMIUM RAZZLE DAZZLE.

-Amusement Parks: Amusement parks are up to their necks in story potential. Want romanticism? Want a kiss at night lit only by the glowing ferris wheel? Want humorous realism? Did someone throw up on the coaster again? Dear lord, this is my life, isn’t it. Want creepy stuff? Fun houses are less fun when everything is trying to murder you. And of course, your OTP could meet when person A decides to scam person B at carnival games, and person B is having none of it.

-Hunger Games AU: Ever wanted to murder people and not have to cover it up? Congratulations, the Hunger Games AU is for you! How will your ship react to a doomed romance? Will they Katniss/Peeta their way out of things, or will it actually be doomed? Will you pit all of your ships against each other? You decide!

-Sword fights: SWORD FIGHTS SWORD FIGHTS ALL THE SWORD FIGHTS PLEASE MORE SWORDS BLADES I NEED THE BLADES ALL THE BLADES SWORD FIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGHTS!

Enemies Turned Lovers Prompts

This was not requested, but I made another prompts list called Best Friends Turned Lovers which you can check out if you like, and I felt like compiling some of my personal favorites from the enemies turned lovers trope as well. I hope these inspire you!

“It’s hard to remember we aren’t in a competition anymore.”

Write about an angel being held captive in hell who falls in love with a demon.

“I don’t fall in love with people very often, I just can’t believe it was you. Out of everyone, you just had to steal my heart. That’s very rude, you know, to steal?” 

An angel sent to destroy the one prophesied to bring the world’s destruction falls in love with them instead.

Person A is from a rich family, intelligent and has a sharp tongue. One day, they snuck out to the poor district, curious. They met Person B, strong and independent, who clearly hates the people of the rich district. Not knowing Person A’s real identity, they both became fast friends, running around on top of rooftops at night, stealing breads from vendors only to give them to the beggars and telling each other stories while laying side by side in the flower meadow.

“Isn’t it strange to think that just a while back, we were always fighting?”

“I wonder what you look like,” the hero’s fingertips ghosted over the villain’s mask.

“Don’t, please,” the villain’s voice was weak, pleading.

The hero hesitated. It was unsettling, hearing the villain beg. For a moment, the villain actually seemed vulnerable, seemed human.

“Don’t,” the hero was sure that their eyes were playing tricks on them. They could have sworn that they saw a tear roll down the villain’s cheek. “You don’t want to know, trust me.”

The hero snapped out of their trance. “Trust you?” The hero laughed humourlessly and shook their head. “Enough stalling,” in a swift motion, the hero ripped off the black piece of cloth covering the villain’s face.

The world stopped.

The mask fluttered lifelessly to the ground, forgotten.

The hero was certain now, the villain was crying.

“I’m so sorry, love,” the villain managed to choke out.

The hero fell to their knees.

This was wrong. Everything was wrong. The wasn’t how it was supposed to go. The villain was supposed to be a monster. The hero had prepared themself to see the face of a monster. Instead, they were greeted by the face they woke up to every morning and the face they saw before they slept.

The face of their beloved.

Hi :)

Oh, I love me some good enemies to lover trope. But there is some things you have to be careful with, so I start with a little reminder what not to do and then go into what to do and even though you didn’t really ask for it, I thought of some prompts while writing this answer.

Enemies to lover

stay away from non-consensual

they are enemies and will likely be awful to each other in the beginning

but if you want them to be a happy couple at the end they shouldn’t be abusive to each other

because even if they later get together it will always leave a mark on that relationship

forcing someone to do something is wrong and even if the victim later loves to do it in the relationship, it doesn’t change the fact that they were once forced when they didn’t want to do it

Now that that is established here is how to start with the trope.

Why are they enemies?

how do they know each other?

why do they hate each other?

are they literally at war with each other or are they people who met each other and really didn’t click in the beginning?

give them reason to hate or at least strongly dislike each other

you can give them the same reason for hating each other

or spice it up and make both of them dislike something else about the other person

How can you fix it?

now that you’ve established why they hate it each other you have to find out what needs to be done to fix it

it’s important to find a way to make them both see the other person as a normal human being with their own hopes and problems and not just this unshakeable image of an always bad enemy

maybe they don’t know all the information, maybe it’s a misconception that could be solved by talking

but don’t just make them say those things

let actions speak louder than words

for example character A thinks character B is rude and inconsiderate and only interested in themself - but then A sees B doing something completely selfless

Slowly falling love

it wouldn’t be enough to see them being selfless to make them completely change their mind and fall in love

but it would make them rethink what they thought about the other one and maybe try to get to know them better, because they realized there is so much more to learn and they maybe judged too soon

a changed behaviour in one character could then trigger the other one into rethinking their bad relationship

finding something that they have in common or that they like about the other one can pave the way for a neutral relationship that then turns into something more

so it rarely goes directly from hate to love, especially because this could be an indicator for rash actions and mood swings towards each other that could be harmful in a relationship

it’s more like hate turning into acceptance and understanding and then slowly to love

adenoidal (adj) :  some of the sound seems to come through their nose.

appealing (adj): voice shows that you want help, approval, or agreement.

breathy (adj): with loud breathing noises.

booming (adj): very loud and attention-getting.

brittle (adj): if you speak in a brittle voice, you sound as if you are about to cry.

croaky (adj): they speak in a low, rough voice that sounds as if they have a sore throat.

grating (adj): a grating voice, laugh, or sound is unpleasant and annoying.
