Charles chuckled a little more to himself and settled himself as Erik seemed to be surrendering his need to work on his plans and headed to the bedroom. “Don’t worry, old friend, you’re not going mad.” He said to him calmly, though there was still the note of a smile in his tone. “Sorry to have disturbed you but I couldn’t resist.” He knew he had disrupted his plotting, but he did have the sense not to do so dangerously.

Does that mean I’m expelled? Oh, on the contrary. You’re enrolled.

Charles was renowned for his determination to show people better paths, alas, there were very, very few things that he deemed worthy of him ever abandoning a person that either needed his help or was willing to help him help someone else. He had seen some dreadful things in people’s heads and though he would say for sure there were people out there that had truly lost their way, he did not believe that they were not able to redeem themselves, it was perhaps in this way that Charles could be called naive.

The terms seemed agreeable to him, he guessed there were personal things in there that she would rather keep hidden, but he also assumed that there were things in there that she didn’t want to even consider reliving. “We can do that. Whatever you don’t want me to see, picture a closed door and I won’t look, you have my word.” He promised and rolled out a little to get ready to go into the garden, wondering what it was she felt the need to explain.

When she spoke again, his brow furrowed ever so slightly, though it was not judgemental, simply curious for the conditions of her unique case, but he didn’t press, he was sure he would be told soon enough. “Thank you for this, Ellie.” He smiled to her. “I appreciate this is hard and we’ll do all this on your terms, I’ll follow your lead, I promise.”

He nodded his understanding for that, brow furrowing a little in thought for his nightmares, perhaps they should look into finding some device with Hank’s help that might ease his worries of hurting someone, at least to have control anyway, he was reminded of Alex there.

“Well, yes, that might have been it.” He agreed after some thought and looked him over seriously for a long moment. “Alec, I have every intention to help you to learn to keep control of your mutation, wouldn’t be much of a school for mutants if I didn’t now would it?” He teased though it was gentle. “I promise that by the end of this semester, you won’t need to worry about loosing control ever again.” He smiled, meant as encouragement, of course.

Charles chuckled at that tease, he wouldn’t mind if she did, either way but it still got him to smile some for the playfulness, glad that she seemed relaxed about it enough to joke. The ride was good and held a lot of laughs and teasing.

As they pulled up towards the farmhouse, a man in a checkered flannel shirt waved to them happily and of course, Charles waved right back. He didn’t bother to sense around the house for the mutant, that little wave was a warm enough greeting for him apparently.

The car stopped and Hank got out to position the chair for Charles while the telepath moved himself out of the car.

“Mercy,” He addressed as the man in the flannel shirt came wondering over to greet them. “Would you mind greeting our new friend while I get ready?” He asked with a smile, every faith in her and her ability to handle it.

OPEN STARTER

So very often did Charles come across people that were struggling, suffering and were mentally crying out in a way they thought people wouldn’t hear them, alas, there was one person who could hear them.

He reached out to the voice he could hear and got himself into their head, to ring his calm voice inside and try his best to help.

“I know you’re exhausted and fed up, I can feel that you think you’re close to shattering into pieces, but please listen to me, even at your weakest, there is great strength within you. Keep. Fighting.”

Charles simply observed him, and tried not to venture into his head to allow Alec the time to work out the words if he wanted to talk about what he had seen and indeed what he had lived through. But it was a hard thing to block out and he could see all about Alec’s parents and his situation when he was younger and damned if the telepath’s eyes didn’t well.

“Anger is a natural reaction to something as severe as what you had to endure in your youth.” He paused a moment to consider him, “It is a lot for anyone to go through once, let alone multiple times.” Charles rubbed the back of his neck for a moment. “These nightmares happen often? Trigger your mutation on a subconscious level, did you discover your mutation in anger with them?” He could read his mind but he focused his conscious attention on Alec and did his best to not pry in his thoughts.

The shifter looked up and smiled a little, visibly nervous. Nodding, Mercy tried to push aside her nerves. This was the first time in months she was leaving the safety of the house or grounds. Since the manor really was in the middle of nowhere, and she had enough land to run until she tired…this was a big step.

“As ready as I’ll ever be,” she replied. “I just hope I can be of some help…even if it’s not much.”

It was a big step and Charles knew it, he also wasn’t going to let her back out of it easily either so when she confirmed he nodded and made his way towards the car, chuckling lightly as he went.

“Honestly, Mercy, just the extra company will be a good help, it’s a fair drive.” He half teased before pulling himself into the car while Hank took his chair to put in the boot. “Shouldn’t be too bad though, nice simple drive.”

Once Mercy got in, they would head off on what would be a two hour drive towards New York itself, though their destination was further out to the more rural areas to a farm house in the middle of nowhere. Charles was energetic and excited, happy it seemed to believe that the family they were visiting were mutant friendly.
