Currently, I’m looking into archiving the Yo-Kai Watch series, and I have to say it took me an hour just to create folders for every single piece of media. This is going to be both fun and an extreme pain.

Apologies for this account being inactive for some time. I just wanted to wish every Professor Layton fan a happy upcoming New Year! I hope that 2026 is a big year for both the fandom and the franchise!

Currently, the fandom is working hard to preserve and maintain this franchise. A friendly shout-out to Keitai Wiki for helping preserve Mansion of the Deathly Mirror, and to the folks at Team Enigma for their ongoing work recreating Mansion of the Deathly Mirror.

Professor Layton Archive Discusses/Rant:

Hello, everyone! I’m Professor Layton Archive, but for the purpose of this discussion (and any future discussions), you can just call me PLA. I thought I should mention that upfront.

Anyway, I’ve been part of the Professor Layton lost media/archiving community for about a year now. Currently, I’m the lead archivist, stepping into the role after our former lead archivist (@lutiaslayton, our beloved) resigned.

So, hi again, I’m PLA. This blog is a safe space to ask any questions about Professor Layton media as a whole. Please don’t hesitate to reach out with questions about archiving or anything related. I’d love to have a better communication with this fandom, especially on the Tumblr side, which I’m still pretty new to.

Anyway, if everyone’s okay with it, I just wanted to rant a bit about my experience with archiving in the Professor Layton fandom. My first and biggest grievance is the lack of communication between regular fans and archivists.

The main reason I wanted to touch base is because of this communication gap. I feel like fans and archivists haven’t been communicating effectively, which leads to misconceptions about media, preservation, archiving, and so on.

Lately, the archivist community has been working on methods to streamline and share information to reduce misinformation while also increasing awareness. However, we’ve noticed that many fans aren’t aware of ongoing projects or efforts due to a significant lack of outreach and awarenes

Another major grievance that I believe I’ve mentioned before but it’s worth addressing again is the importance of treating everyone with respect, especially those of us in the lost media and archiving scene.

We’ve spent countless hours ensuring things are preserved, so all we’re asking for is simple courtesy. Remember to always credit discoveries so that people are properly informed and aware. Plus, it’s just a nice way to recognize the honest, hard work that goes into preserving media.

I’m not picking on this person as this just general thing I’ve noticed but PLEASE, sure it may be a fun story to tell but it didn’t survive a housefire. I believe this started on TikTok because someone mistook a piece of hyperbole as fact. Like sure it may be a fun idea but in the archiving community it’s kinda just more disrespectful in that regards that someone didn’t take their time to fully read something and went with it and now everyone is going with it. Just thought I should straighten out the story.

(Edit: to clarify if case someone makes the point of pointing it out, yes there’s fire damage and water damage on the device. That doesn’t meant anything expect that’s the condition it was in. All we know someone could’ve put a lighter up to it)

LEVEL 5 has posted guidelines regarding how the content of the Professor Layton games should be shared. Although in Japanese, here is a link to their official Twitter post from their Layton branch. (Here is a link to the post itself in case the twitter one is taken down.)

What does this mean?

It means that everything Level 5 related is at risk of being purged. This includes (but is not limited to) cutscenes and (some) gameplay. Yes, although it is only for the Layton series right now, they could push this for other IPs as well.

Originally, I thought to not worry as the guidelines were written in Japanese, therefore via common sense it'd be stupid if they went after English speaking content.

However, things can always change in the future, and after seeing Level 5 taking down an English speaking video featuring Level 5 gameplay just recently, it's enough to raise an eyebrow.

Okay, what can I do with this?

Preferably, archive whatever you feel needs archiving. We don't know a lot of details nor can foretell what the company may do, especially with media in other languages / outside of Japan, but it's best to be safe rather than sorry.

And when making content related to Level 5 on platforms such as YouTube, Tiktok, Instagram, etc, be wary and always have a backup. It's hard to say to also adhere to the guidelines as it's not officially translated, but if that were to happen, you should do that as well.
