In case you don't know this movie, this movie is called 9 to 5 and it's about three women who are victims of a sexist bigot of a boss. It's a comedy movie so of course they get revenge in the most humorous way possible, but if you ignore the fact that it's a comedy the themes presented in the movie are actually very relevant and important.
Anyway, the reason I'm posting about this is because yesterday, when I was watching 9 to 5 with my father, he told me that he believes that women workers aren't objectified or taken advantage of within the modern workforce. Being a woman in an office myself, I could not agree and was actually shocked that he held this view at all. Even though things have significantly improved since the making of 9 to 5, it still isn't enough. The statistics clearly show that women are promoted and paid less than men for the same work, with women from ethnic backgrounds even more disadvantaged.
The fact is that is this should not be the case anymore. I shouldn't be considered less valuable as an employee simply because I am an ethnic woman. I work hard and should be recognized for it, but the fact is that all of the managers within my particular office are men. Some of my female colleagues have been waiting years (more like decades) to get promoted and yet are always passed over in favour of younger male employees who have just entered the company. To get to the point, it makes me angry that sexism is still at play today and that people aren't even aware of it?! It's sad to know that my father holds unfavourable views about women's rights even though he has two daughters and a working wife. But I don't know. Maybe it doesn't matter to him because he isn't a woman.
