such a good, cute read!!! it’s your typical second chance romance, but it has a very satisfying ex-friends to rivals to friends to lovers journey in the mixture alongside lots of outside influences that make it even more messy. definitely recommend!

Sapphic Cyberpunk

With Neuromancer, Bladrunner 2099, and Edgerunners 2 all of the horizon, I’ve got a huge craving for some Sapphic Cyberpunk. Anyone have anything to scratch the itch?

AlwaysBeReading81: The Obake Code by Makana Yamamoto is they only one I’ve run into this year. It is the followup to their first book, but I read it as a stand-alone (which worked fine). It is a fairly light and a bit of a mix of cyberpunk, heist, and street racing.

There’s some spice and it’s founded on care and tenderness, which just got me more emotional. I also loved the way the story and characters shows existential questioning and what it means to be human. Side note: Im kinda tired of the cyberpunk genre having a male protagonist fall in love with a femme android/special being who’s “born sexy yesterday” so I was so happy to read a book where it’s sapphic and the inherent sexual power dynamics also change just by virtue of it being with another woman who’s also had a hard life.

Nemesis Mine by Amy Archer

This was such a fun, lovely, cosy little romantasy.

I adored Cyrus and Maximillian together. The whole opposites attract, forbidden love thing is always fun. Coupled with all the fake fighting and insults as flirting and I was absolutely head over heels for them.

I loved the dramatic climax and then the soft, hopeful ending to tie it all together. It really felt perfectly balanced with the rest of the story and the image I had for these two and what they could be, if given the chance.

This honestly would have been an easy 5 stars for me if the over-the-top cartoon villain stuff had been toned back. I think Cyrus would have worked better as a reclusive sullen misanthrope rather than a man who actively goes around plotting mischief and mayhem and sulking about his lacklustre reputation like a child. I honestly contemplated DNFing in those early chapters, he annoyed me so much. I am VERY glad I didn’t, because I loved the rest of this book almost enough to completely overlook how much I hated the start.

London, December 1849-

Irene Shallcross Haley has dedicated her life to necromancy, a forbidden, reviled art that is passed along through sentient grimoires bound in human skin. Killstone Bridge by L.R. Farish

The dead cry loudest in country silence, at Killstone Bridge. Radnor "Mac" MacDavid knows a couple of rudimentary rules of life. The first is you should accept any job offer if you're a mason down on his luck. The second is that you shouldn't mess with forces you don't understand. While fixing an old stone bridge in the farming community of Sancta Genoveva, Mac tries to focus on work, and his ailing professional self-confidence, but finds that the villagers, alive and dead, keep getting in the way. His accommodation is The Belmore Inn, a B & B with flair. It prides itself on historical weekends for guests. Mac arrives in time for the 1920s "Gatsby Days," complete with jazz and croquet on the lawn. The proprietor, Eve Gibbons and her husband Marshal, expect the mason to attend all events in appropriate attire. It's a good thing he's had that kilt sitting in his car since the last Clan Davidson reunion. No one asks too many questions of the new stranger in town when he's decked out in a kilt. Except for Gaul Hixton, the son of the town mayor and Eve's best friend. He knows more about his hometown of San Geno than just about anyone. The good, the gossipy, and the bad. The more Gaul tries to keep Mac and the mayor apart, the more Mac wonders what's really going on, and the more he starts to care about Gaul. Mac finds more than stones at the old bridge. He finds evidence of a crime that'd taken place years before. Using the help of old and new friends, Mac inadvertently mortars himself into an investigation. But there's a little more to the spooky old bridge than an eerie presence that prefers country music and creepy breezes across the fields of corn. The deeper Mac gets into the murderous history of the town, the more weird his friends get, and the more danger all of them are in.
