Broken Mirror: Bad Luck
Charging after the pair, he’d maintained a decent distance behind them, no danger of falling behind, so it seemed. But in the end, all for naught. when the dragon crashed down, creating a protective barrier for the fleeing pair, and Void’s frustration bubbled beneath the surface.
A swing of his sword to ready it by his side and the power festering in his other palm; two means by which to acquire what he sought. And while Jack might have cordoned off their escape, it was to do so with an alternative - a much more reliable means.
”Jack…” Toneless and cold; he had Aicih under full control. No more spiralling in trying to keep the boy muted, no twisted middle ground
But that didn’t change the plan; the objective.
”Stand aside. Ryuenji Tasuku w͢i͠sh̶̸͠ȩ͜͡d̢ ̢f̷͘o͘͞r̛͘͞ his family together… that is what I͏’m̶͢͡ g͘ran̴͡t̸̕͟iń̷̢g him. This boy needs to move and stop preventing us. Y̶҉o̸u͠͞ ͘͡a͏̢r̸͠e͜ ͜͢n͞o͠t́ ̧l̵̨͠e̴͘a͟vi͘n͞҉g͢.͝ ̧͘͟A̕͞͞ny̷ of you.

“Can it! You talk big for a hapless deity in the body of a weak kid! There’s no way I will fall again! Tasuku is my only family as well.. and these are people he loves dearly! A guardian protects and supports his child’s wishes regardless.. I stand by Tasuku’s will as his Buddy, with an unshakable bond!
"Your deranged fallacies are only true to yourself… AND I’M THROUGH WITH YOUR ARROGANCE! BE GONE!” Letting out another air piercing roar for distraction, Jack whipped his tail in a frivolous attempt to build distance between them, ready to spew fire if need be. But it hadn’t come to that, and using his wings as a temporary barrier to deflect any sort of dark stream headed their way, the armordragon took back to the skies with a powerful push of his hind legs. His speed was unmatched, and with the two clinging to his back saddle tightly, he pushed through the wind current and ascended high into the clouds. Not even Void would be able to reach them there..
Admirable, to have stayed by Tasuku and carried on Aichi's last wish for him; all irrelevant to Void. Only one goal mattered - and Jack stood symbolic of everything that blocked the way.
Before he could register it, the tail swung out and around. Raising Blaster Joker to shield himself from a direct blow, a blast launched before he'd be knocked off the concrete and across the street, crashing a fair distance away.
That gave the dragon more than ample opportunity to take off, hauling Chrono and Aichi with him, both well out of harm's way. A glare cast upwards towards the dragon; its opportunity was lost. Chrono and Aichi... both escaped.
Dissolving the blade, he pushed himself onto his feet, The plan was a failure, pursuit would be lost. But he'd made his point.
That was there was to it now...
Blank hues scanned the apartment from his place on the street, gazing up to the place he and Tasuku temporarily called home. Another home that would be abandoned. A return to the residence, collecting Aichi's stolen possessions and Void returned to the street. A glance in the direction in which Jack and the others had vanished.
If he couldn't have Tasuku and Kai safely whilst the world crumbled, then the easiest thing would be to disappear yet again, and conduct such a scheme from the shadows. He'd live on the streets if need be, there was nowhere to call home. Not a glance back once he turned away, strides in the opposite direction. But Kai and Tasuku, their former lives, wouldn't leave his mind.
Broken Mirror: Bad Luck
They rushed down flight upon flight of stairs, nearly tripping over themselves all the while. Chrono heard Void’s footsteps just above—he was gaining on them. They had to find a way out of this quickly, or—
He was blinded momentarily as they emerged from the dark stairwell into the lobby, eyes darting around frantically until they settled on the nearest door to the darkened street.
"This way!"
Grabbing Aichi’s hand, he tugged him along, labouring to shove the door open and run through. He could only hear it swinging shut once—Void was on their tail and gaining on them rapidly.
Damn…! Where can we go?!
They would be easy targets unless they could find a place to duck into to hide…!
Everything had been left to Chrono’s lead, Aichi followed as best he could with that hold upon the younger’s arm, but ultimately strung along by someone much more capable of succeeding completing in the rescue mission.
A momentary chance to catch his breath as soon as they were standing on the street, he’d wondered how they were to escape; with its power, Void still had their in the palm of its hand - no amount of running could save them if it unleashed that force, even in a populated area. No ordinary human could break those binds.
Before he could ask what had come to mind, Chrono seized his wrist and he staggered after the younger, glancing over his shoulder in fear of the duplicate whose sword slammed the door back open before it could shut and lunged after them. Around his hand that malicious aura manifested; his ammo for the weapon ready to discharge with the two of them in the line of fire.
Worst-case scenario, he’d get Chrono out of the way. He was the one in danger, whom had wrought Void’s wrath. The entire set-up had been about getting him into a corner to deal with him. And Aichi couldn’t let anything happen to him. Neither could he bring himself to let it transpire and the effect on Tasuku—
“Chrono-kun!”
It was from heightened instinct that Jackknife knew a travesty would occur if he did not intervene. And as much as he did not want to abandon Tasuku’s side at such a desperate time, he knew that his partner would have wanted him to go—to stop Void from carrying out its atrocities whilst he lay incapacitated. And so he headed out into the bruised skies of the city, a dreaded feeling filling his dragon heart. Jack knew the culprit would always return to the scene of crime—it was something he had become well-versed in while employed by the Buddy Police alongside Tasuku—and towards the abandoned apartment from last time’s tragedy did he soar. Of course, he had assumed himself too late, seeing the darkened aura expanding around the building, something no mortal human could immediately see with the naked eye. He was ready to burst in, to take responsibility of any collateral damage he may impose, however… But down below from his eagle’s vantage point, was a head of blue and red scrambling to escape, hearing a distressed call of Chrono’s name that was enough of a cue for Jack to finally intervene. With a mighty roar and crashing down to the pavement in front of the two escapees, the mighty armordragon bared his fangs, amber eyes glowering with the intent to harm if it came down to it. We meet again… old friend..
“‘You two! Hurry! Climb onto my back.. Don’t waste anymore time!”
Charging after the pair, he'd maintained a decent distance behind them, no danger of falling behind, so it seemed. But in the end, all for naught. when the dragon crashed down, creating a protective barrier for the fleeing pair, and Void's frustration bubbled beneath the surface.
A swing of his sword to ready it by his side and the power festering in his other palm; two means by which to acquire what he sought. And while Jack might have cordoned off their escape, it was to do so with an alternative - a much more reliable means.

Broken Mirror: Bad Luck
Dark power rained down around them, Chrono screeching to a halt just as one of the shots crashed down right before his feet. At the same moment, he heard a muffled cry for Aichi as he fell against his shoulder.
"Aichi-san—!?"
Damn, this is bad…!
Yet Aichi continued to push him onward. Chrono threw an arm around his shoulders, keeping them low to the ground and tugging Aichi forward as the assault continued. One shot grazed his shoulder, another struck him in the leg. Refusing to fall, he forced his legs forward, pulling himself and Aichi through the open doorway and into the hall.
There has to be somewhere we can hide…!
Looking around frantically as he ran in an arbitrary direction, his eyes fell upon the stairwell. Perfect! He wrenched the heavy door open, shoving Aichi in first before sliding in himself and pulling it shut.
"Sorry…! Are you alright?!"
Safe, but only momentarily, Chrono immediately worked to untie the bindings around Aichi’s wrists, as well as the gag around his mouth.
"Can you walk? There’s no time… We have to get out of here."
From where he’d been struck, there was only a burning sensation, sweat quick to build across his brow from the demand asked so soon after waking, but as long as Chrono was depending on him, there wasn’t any intent to give up. One leg forced itself forward and then the other, reiterating it to himself over that escape was vital lest they face Void’s punishment for whatever scheme had been disrupted.
Following the younger’s lead, Aichi glanced over his shoulder to check their pursuer was anything but upon them, when he was shoved forward and let go altogether, stumbling and crashing into the wall on the other side. Dazed optics rolled over his shoulder yet again, watching as Chrono unfastened the binds around his wrists, allowing his arms to dangle, his shoulders aching from the awkward position.
His head twisted slightly for the knot of his gag to return to easy view, gasping for breath when the cloth fell away and heaved for whatever seconds he could escape doing so. And then there was the matter that nagged him most about the situation.
"Wh- What’s going on—?" he asked breathlessly, pausing afterwards with Chrono’s own questions posed. "I- I’ll be fine… Go. You know the way out, right? I’ll be right with you". Seizing the younger’s sleeve, assurance that he’d do as stated, azure hues glanced back to the door through which they’d travelled and then down the stairwell which should have offered them an escape route.
As expected, the fleeing duo had managed to evade a direct strike when it came to using Blaster Joker itself. And in the seconds the blade had been lodged into the floor, not only had they scarpered out of the apartment, but disappeared from hallway as well.
Irrespective of their fight and vehement efforts to escape, as long as Aichi's body could move, Void was just as adamant to seize them both and gave chase, glaring optics scanning for any ambush the pair might have resorted to. But nothing.
The sound of echoing footfalls caught his ear whilst standing in front of the doorway which led to the stairwell into which the pair had fled, and threw the door open, finding the two already descending through the levels.
Grinding his teeth, he gave chase; that was all there was to it. Doubtful that he'd manage to catch them until a wider ground was ready for confrontation, but refusing to allow the gap to further widen, he hurried down the twisting staircases all the same and charged after the pair out onto the street, clutching his sword the entire time.
If worst came to worst, he could simply use it as a makeshift javelin and hope for the best, or attempt to Lock them from a distance. But ultimately, the entire plan was falling apart rather swiftly. And it worsened his disdain towards Chrono.
Broken Mirror: Bad Luck
Gotcha…!
The ploy had been to lure Void away from the fallen Aichi, but the momentary elation at the success was dashed. Void moved more quickly than Chrono would’ve anticipated, and it was all he could do to stumble out of the way.
"Ghk—!"
The white blade caught his arm in a glancing blow, slicing his sleeve open and cutting into flesh. It was a small, light injury, but it had still drawn blood.
That wasn’t relevant. Chrono immediately used the leverage from the dodge to dash past Void as he passed by, and over to the younger Aichi’s side. Good, he had woken up. This would make things easier.
"Aichi-san!"
He took hold of Aichi’s arm, hauling him onto his feet as quickly as he could. Those bindings had to be dealt with—they would definitely impact movement. But they had to get out of Void’s immediate vicinity first…
"C’mon, let’s go! Hurry!!"
As successful as his plan had been, Chrono didn’t come out unscathed, and another muffled cry sounded, another failed attempt to call his name, but somehow, the boy had managed to catch on that Aichi had stirred. His legs struggling had somehow managed to loosen the binds around his ankles, tugging the material loosely enough to slip one through (albeit losing a shoe in the process) and deal with at least one end.
Within seconds, Chrono was upon him and pulling him onto his feet, not a second too soon. Stumbling up, he’d almost toppled right on top of Chrono in the anarchy, steadied only by the secure hold on him and suddenly being dragged along, hurrying as best he could after the younger. He’d lose the possessions stripped of him, but it was a small sacrifice for Chrono’s safety.
He’d come to Aichi’s rescue, after all, and he refused to hinder such an effort simply because of disorientation or something as small as losing his phone. At that moment, Chorno was paramount and nothing in the world mattered other than getting him out alive.
A momentary lapse in his fixation with securing Chrono, the boy had managed to not only dodge the blow, but even slip by while Aichi stumbled forward, thrusting the sword into the plaster of the wall and whip his body around to face the absconding youngster. Worse still, he'd managed to make it to the younger Aichi; if he lost such a useful hostage, then Chrono would escape retribution yet again. And he wouldn't even have the chance to confront Tasuku once he had recovered enough.
No matter what the cost; he needed to secure Aichi, and if possible, Chrono as well. If not slay him to prevent his interference another second longer.
"You are not l͝e͏͜͏àv҉̴́i̧n҉g!"
Charging with his blade would take too long; he needed a way of blocking them off, or their escape route at the very least. Manifesting the energy within his being, he launched a number of shot bursts of power, rather than the continuous stream that had been the case in the past. One bullet striking the floor in front of Chrono's feet, another slamming into Aichi's back, earning an anguished cry and slump against Chrono's shoulder, others rained all around. In spite of it, the normal Aichi stayed loyal to Chrono's efforts to escape, pushing him forward as best he could.
The same noble attribute as Tasuku; ensuring Chrono, who would leech and steal, would be the one to escape if things were to get desperate. But a barrage itself wasn't going to be enough; he needed to show Chrono what he'd wronged, and launched forward, yelling with that blade giving chase as he dove directly at the redhead.
Broken Mirror: Bad Luck
I…I really can’t do anything?
"But that’s…"
Was there really no way out of this? Would the Aichi from this timeline simply succumb to the same fate? And put Tasuku through another world of suffering…? Put Aichi himself through all of this all over again? All because of this…this curse?
"No! No way! I’m not buying it! There HAS to be a way!"
He found a new future for himself… And no one said he couldn’t help Aichi and Tasuku find one too.
"You think I’m gonna sit around and just let you erase everything?! Think again! I won’t accept this… And I’m not gonna accept the fact that Aichi-san is gone either."
"Guess that means I’m gonna be standin’ in your way no matter what. What’re you gonna do about it, huh?"
"There is no way. I've felt it within him, and h̶̨e͘͝ ̷̴͢n̶̴a̸͘҉méd̶̵ ̴̶͟şo̕m̨͏e͘onȩ́ w͘͜͜h̢̛é̴n͏ ̨̢w͟e̡͞ met; that someone... is himself. That this one exists proves Aić̶͞h̷̛͠ì͡ ͏is̢ ̡͠d͞o̵o͘m̨ę̷́d̸͡ ".
The blade inched itself back, aimed directly at Chrono's rigid form; once more, he himself was the focus - the prey lured into the trap arranged just for him, cut-off from everyone that might serve as back-up, aid. And, without any decisive moves up his sleeve, at a disadvantage when it came to facing his adversary.
"Your fix͡a̛͝͠t͝i̵̷o̵͢n̸ ̷ǫ͜n ́i̕͢͠n͜͡d̴͢i̸͟v̡̛i̢͝d͏u̷̧͢a̢̢l͞ì͟͝ty͢͜ ͢a̵ǹd̸̕͢ minor appearances in the world is something that holds humankind back; it serves no purpose but to expose wea̡k̷̴ǹe̡͠ss̸es, ̕t͏̶i̷̷ȩ͢s̸̢ ̢̀t̀h̷͡á҉̀t̀͜ ҉h͝o̧͞l̸͢͞d̸̕ ̸y̧o͢u i̵͢n p̧͢͝l̛a̢̧c̢҉e͢͟ when the enemy strikes. Fingers around the hilt of the blade tightened, brows sinking to the tops of his sockets. "If you refuse to end this pointless resistance, then I̢͜ ̀s̨͠ḩàl͟͡l͝ ̢͟͞r̵͟em̴o̕͞v̀e̶̵̢ ̕͜y͠͏o̶̷̡u̕͜ ̨͢m̴̨y̸͠s̀͠e̛͘̕ļ͡f҉͟".
No word of warning, the body lunged towards Chrono, thrusting the sword within his hands forward, an attempt for a quick strike that might eliminate the obstacle whom had placed himself in the way on behalf of those who couldn't.
Broken Mirror: Bad Luck
"—!"
His plan foiled, he stopped right in his tracks as the sharpened tip of the blade pointed right at him. Void was armed too? Chrono really had no way to fight back…
"Damn…"
"What’re you talking about? Lost the right? How about you? Who gave you the right to say something like that?”
From the disjointed words, the abrupt shift between first- and third-person speech… Chrono could begin to put two and two together, as fantastical as this whole situation was.
"Aichi-san! You’re still in there, aren’t you?!"
This was the absolute last thing he could do.
"You can hear me, right?! Wake the hell up! Tasuku still needs you!”
He didn’t know how well this would work, but he had to try…!
"I don’t know about this curse or whatever, but I ain’t gonna leave the other Aichi-san here! There’s no point if no one’s there! Don’t you think that’s how Tasuku’ll feel too?!"
Not only that, but Aichi was his friend. No matter the incarnation or circumstances, that wouldn’t change. And Chrono wouldn’t abandon him—either of them.
Not when he finally wasn’t alone anymore.
Head cocked towards the other, Aichi's lifeless eyes rolled around to meet him, not a shred of the distress that had driven him into a flurry before. Nothing readable across the entirety of his form. Something inside his mind having truly snapped and broken.
"Aichi ceased to exist on that day thr̢e͏̶e̵͞ ̀y̸̵̨ea̶̧r̕͜s̴̢͡ ͢ag͜ó͜͠ , and d҉͢íe̴d ͝th̷҉e̶ ̸͜d̀̕̕à̧͟ý̵͟ y͞o̷͏̡u and Ryuenji Tasuku escaped his rotting soul. The blade shifted, by mere inches, so that attention followed suit and redirected itself towards the unconscious Aichi at his feet, never taking away those dark optics from Chrono's own, much brighter and lively.
"You lack the capabilities to cure him; take him, and he'll only reignite this feud in front of the boy all over again. In his condition, he's posed to turn into me, following the route this hapless one has been dragged.

His head tilted, a movement of curiosity directed towards the boy without the capability of showing such intrigue within his frozen features. "Tasuku shall understand; he's an adult. Your kind is well-versed in understanding loss when it's necessary.

Broken Mirror: Bad Luck
"Waugh…!"
Nearly losing his footing, Chrono instinctively shielded his face against the intangible yet oppressive force that seemed to pour from Aichi’s being.
"H-hey…! What’s wrong with you…?!"
The shift from blaming Chrono and the Aichi of this timeline to tearing into himself left Chrono reeling and uncertain. What was going on? He didn’t know the full story behind Aichi’s possession or all of this timeline business and all the things it entailed. Not to mention, the other Aichi was unconscious and at this Aichi’s feet; he would be the first to feel the brunt of anything that might’ve happened.
Damn… What can I do…?!
"L-look, just…" Just what? Calm down? Was that even possible at this point?
"It doesn’t have to be like this!"
Maybe he could get through to Aichi. Or the parts of Aichi that could still hear him.
"If he’s at the hospital, then…then go see him! Stay by his side and make sure you’re with him, as his family!"
In the midst of saying all of this, he had begun to edge around the room, trying to get closer without being detected. He had to get the other Aichi out of there somehow…
The momentary outburst sapped Aichi of his strength completely, when the cries died down and his writhing ceased altogether, his body limp underneath the almost-crushing clutching of his pulsing temples, his concentration waned. greatly so. All that flooded his mind was his failures as a parent, how desperately let down Tasuku had been by him, so have acted so carelessly and selfishly.

Any willpower that might have lingered would be drained in an instance, his arms dropping heavily either side and gazing downwards without focus, truly the likeness of a dangling corpse.
"Aichi lost the right to be his family long ago... The reason it is this way is solely down to his defiance to remain for the child's sake. There is too much wrong with him because he simply wouldn't submit".
An arm swung around, unleashing the blade the matched that of his former knight's, the movement jerked his head to the side, dangling like that of a puppet at the end of strings. And with minimal movement, the sword aimed itself at Chrono, a warning that his movements had been tracked partway through the endeavour he'd opted for.

Broken Mirror: Bad Luck
Tensing and at the ready for any sort of fistcuffs that the encounter might have disintegrated into, he was almost relieved when no such action followed. It was hard to forget just what Void was capable of—Chrono had only seen a fraction of it…
Scared? Not so much. But if the situation escalated into something like that, would he be able to defend both himself and the Aichi of his own timeline?
"Stop screwing around! Tasuku hasn’t replaced you at all! Do you know how much he talks about you? How much he thinks about you everyday?!"
Clenching his own fists so tightly that had his nails dug another millimeter more into his palms, he would’ve drawn blood, Chrono could barely contain himself at the tirade that he was hearing.
"Yeah, maybe I can’t do anything for him! I can’t help him fight crime, or aliens, or whatever! But the least I can do is stay with him, right?! What are YOU doing?! You attacked him! You hurt him! What kind of parent would—"
And then came the grim news, that punched Chrono in the gut and knocked the wind out of him.
"…Huh?"
"Tasuku’s…in the hospital?"
Any momentum he had been building quickly fizzled out and died at that. Attacked? Almost killed? And Chrono had known nothing about this?
"Why… When did this happen? Who did it to him…?!"
Blow for blow his wild accusations were matched with retaliation that Tasuku's love was still alive and true. That, outside of his distorted perception, beyond his broken mindset, he was the one causing the damage to their relationship.
Or rather, Void; picking at his ruptured remnants, tearing away at any wounds which littered his dwindling existence and using any ill-feelings as weaponry, fuelling and exacerbating it, even exaggerating what exactly reached its grasp.
"Do you know how much he talks about you?
"Stop it..."
How much he thinks about you everyday?!"
"You're a liar..."
"But the least I can do is stay with him, right?!"

"SHUT UP!!"
The same transpired as the previous outburst; wave after wave of power flooding out, Aichi grasping at his head and quaking in place. The sensation was horrendous; it was as though Link Joker was literally ripping his body apart, using any and all openings to break through his feeble shell, tear him apart right in front of Chrono and finally remove his skin so to take on whatever form pleased it. All the while, he shrank inwards, crying and wincing, gasping for breath, with fingers clawing at his scalp.

Family Gathering
In one moment he could recall it vividly, the sheer panic and dread that had overcome him as that dark blade penetrated through flesh and muscle. In all of his years of fighting and accumulating injury, none had even remotely compared to something like this. It had been the equivalent to setting his innards on fire, searing acid racking a vicious agony throughout his small being as his skin shivered in cold sweat. A combination that almost made him beg for any sort of release..
But in the next moment, there was nothing. A complete blank in his memory, as if he had been graced with a quiet death—-only to awaken in his subconscious now, once more. There was the incessant beeping of a heart monitor somewhere close, the clinking of wires hooked up into his veins, sustaining what little life there was enduring within him. And voices… hushed, distant.. and pained voices reaching his ears, all the while a gentle and warm touch against the back of his hand that felt… so familiar. But he couldn’t exactly put his finger on it. Who was there? What were these presences near him? Was he safe? —Or in danger..?
”—……..” I have.. to wake up… I can’t… just… lay here….
Minutes passed, the room still silent; the only sounds to be heard were passing footsteps and the machine at the bedside. This… could turn out to be a long day. An exhausting one at that. None of this should be happening… Nor should any of them be here. A reunion with his family was something he had imagined the entire time he had been away. But, this… It was as far as possible from anything he wanted it to be.
Brought out of his thoughts by a voice — one that he assumed he’d never hear again — he turned towards Aichi, but the look he offered to the other was far from friendly.
"I don’t want to hear a word from you unless you’re explaining how you’re here, why the others allowed Tasuku to leave… and more importantly… what happened to him and why you weren’t there to stop it.”
They were harsh words, even for him. Especially directed at Aichi. Yes; definitely the opposite of what Kai hoped for. Becoming angry is not one of the things he planned. He couldn’t help it though. His son was hurt… And, Aichi… Well… It wasn’t too difficult to tell that Void’s power was present.
Happy family reunion.
That heavy gaze-- no, more of a glare weighed down much more than it would have under normal circumstances. Like a child reprimanded after committing an act and attempting to cover his tracks.
"Not here... he'll wake up... He doesn't need to see this... if this is the first sight of us together in this timeline..."
Rising from his seat, he moved away from the bedside, drawing the curtain around; a flimsy veil between parents and child, no different than a simple door which would block parental disagreement, allowing sound to filter through nevertheless.
Only once the division, as futile as it was, had been set in place, did Aichi meet Kai's eyes; dulled azure against sharp jade.
"I'm sorry..." On so many accounts that it was difficult to voice them all; out of shame, disappointment, regret. So many emotions, and none of which he could convey properly. And the fear of losing Kai because of what had him by the throat.
"I don't know why I'm here... I can only guess my willpower to stay with you both brought me into this timeline. But I... I woke up here. I don't know anything.
But Tasuku-kun... I found him, having been attacked. I wasn't there for the same reason I've never been there... Kai-kun... I'm sorry, but you have to take care of him. Protect him, and yourself... from me". Even when confronted, the fear that Void had drilled into his mind paralyzed him, rather than to speak the truth. He hadn't directly confessed to his own condition... solely out of fear of losing both Kai and Tasuku, now that he'd finally reached them again.
Broken Mirror: Bad Luck
"You bastard—let go of him!"
He knew full well of how helpless he was. He was aware of how much power Aichi had at his fingertips while in Void’s grasp, for he had seen it for himself.
"I get it… This is about Tasuku."
But even so…!
"Just listen to yourself…! Do you think Tasuku would want something like this?!"
"While he’s out of the way? The hell’s that supposed to mean? You’re his family, aren’t you?! But you’re treating him like some kind of object!”
It was a bit of a touchy subject. Chrono, who had had no family for as long as he could remember, seeing his—his partner, being treated like this by his own… This wasn’t how it should’ve been. Even he knew that much.
He didn’t know whether he was speaking to this Void entity or what scraps of Aichi remained, but if he could at least stall, draw the original Aichi out into the open and stop this farce, he would go down trying—because there was no other option for him.
"Tasuku loves you more than anything! Don’t you trust him at all? Your own kid? Do you really think he’ll be happy with that? Open your goddamn eyes already!”
Yells and emotion, all pouring themselves out for the vessel to hear; not that such honest words would get past the control Void had over every inch. His arm straightened, slamming the other Aichi's face against the floor and removed his coiled digits carefully, slowly, to allow his full attention to the young man in front.
"How dare you..." Seething rage swelled up; the concoction of the twisted union of a distorted personality born from Void's influence and the power itself melded where Aichi would have once been in control. Neither view nor reaction would have anything even remotely close to their current states if Aichi had lived. If Void hadn't assumed complete control and twisted what was left deep beneath the darkness that flooded.
"What right have you to talk... and criticize me about my family!"
His hands curled into fists, trembling from disgust and frustration, teeth bore themselves between quivering lips and a stomp, once he was back at full height, threatened to ignite whatever unfortunate scuffle might follow.
But no such action, instead, he stood only with that growing distaste. "We suffered for so long, is it wrong to want him back, now that we're able to exist around one another?! Is it wrong to try and make up for failing his as a mother since the day he was born?!
You don't understand anything. How could he love someone-- something, that let him down so much! If he loves me so much, why did he run away to you the first instant he had? Why did he replace Kai-kun and I with these frauds?!"
A furious swing of the arm and he indicated to the younger duplicate behind him. A pause followed, in which he fought to regain his breath. Even then, his lips twisted; not into anything reflecting the joy of taunting and malicious game, but of a foul taste. With a slow twist, his vision centred itself onto the boy in front of him.
"You want to know where he is, do you? He's in the hospital; he was attacked and almost killed! Where were you; his beloved choice?! I held him in my arms, afraid he wouldn't make it, and where were you?! You were supposed to protect him, weren't you?! He's not safe with you; he wanted his family all along, why are we no longer good enough?!"
Broken Mirror: Bad Luck
Lying listlessly on his bed, Chrono stared hard at the bland ceiling of his temporary room, still somewhat alien to him even now. Card Capital 2 had closed for the day, not that anyone in their right mind would agree to meet for a quest at this time of day, leaving Chrono alone and feeling like he was withering away to boredom.
"…Guess Tasuku’s busy today."
A little odd, seeing as Tasuku would beeline straight back to the apartment if he didn’t call Chrono first, but he still had work on top of school and everything else that had—
A dull buzzing pulled him from his lethargic daze, Chrono willing himself to drag his heavy body upwards.
"Must be him… Huh?"
"From Aichi-san…?"
Now, that was odd. Aichi didn’t text him all too often…
"Wonder what it’s about…"
"…"
"…What?!"
And without another word, he grabbed a light jacket, slinging it over his shoulder and running out the door.
—
His legs were burning by the time he arrived at the apartment, tossing his bike haphazardly against the stand and locking it clumsily before rushing into the apartment. Jabbing at the elevator button repeatedly, he grew frustrated as it crawled its way down to the ground floor.
"Ahh, dammit, hurry up…!"
Abandoning the idea in the end, Chrono instead turned to the stairs, sprinting up two at a time before he finally reached the floor that he knew to have been Tasuku’s suite.
He hadn’t known what to expect when he threw the door open. Perhaps he shouldn’t have been so surprised given the location. It would always be so odd to see two of the same person standing so close to one another, but to think that he had been the culprit…!?
"You’re…the Aichi-san from the other timeline…"
No… That wasn’t quite right. It wasn’t Aichi who stood before him, but rather, the thing within, of which Chrono had only known very vaguely about…
"Hey… What’s going on here?! Let Aichi-san go!"
As expected, he'd come. It was too easy to pull in such a hapless case. Naturally, as soon as Tasuku's name would come up, Chrono would jump. Anywhere else and he'd have blown off the entire affair and fed Aichi to fate's cruel jaws.
The arrival's attention drawn towards the captive, a white boot slide across the floor, nudging the identical chin with the tip of his boot. Which Aichi? How fun, to play a game where he'd be faced with two identical people, whose lives diverged so drastically. And yet, would he care to save anyone?
"You're in no position to cast demands. Sendou Aichi will remain".
For all the bravado he exerted, there was nothing Chrono could do while Void standing between him and not one, but two Aichis.
His lips twisted, forging a cold and calious smirk in stark contrast to that defiance upon the younger's face and sank onto one knee, grasping a handful of the unconscious Aichi's hair, hauling his head up from the floor. The coldness in his eyes grew evermore, abhor only provided through bitter tones and words launched itself at Chrono through the glare he maintained.
"For what reason should I stop? This if the perfect opportunity to end it all; your interference especially, while Tasuku-kun is out of the way. You, who took everything away, snatching it with your filthy hands.
And there's this one... who wants to take my family for his own? In what world do you honestly believe I will stand by and allow it? Neither of you are going anywhere!"
Vanguard…?
Broken Mirror: Bad Luck
"I’ll call later, Okaa-san. Bye, Emi".
A call into the home he’d all but moved out of, Aichi had stopped by to check up on things, ready to return to the apartment and plan for the evening ahead; somehow, he wanted to further bridge the gap he’d sensed, but how… that was the question.
He turned his back on the building, walking alongside the road, unaware that another identical to him was in pursuit. Around the corner and pausing at an empty crossroads, his eyes and ears scanned the area. But then, the creeping sensation that he wasn’t alone had wormed its way in.
Twisting on his heels, the last sight he’d expected to find was himself. Of course, there were numerous copies from various beginnings, but, for some reason, many of them appeared to have ventured off in their own direction. Almost as though he were the only one (aside from Psyqualia and Reverse, both of which had stemmed from him).
But there was something troubling about this one; his appearance ragged and matted, eyes cold and the attire (let alone the blood smeared into his white shirt) screamed only one thing - that had been the attire, minus the coat, that had been donned by the other Aichis during the Legion campaign. And there was still one surviving threat - the threat.
”Legion-ku—!”
His mistaken cry halted with a choke, slammed against the wall of the building by which the pair stood with the other’s hand wrapped around his throat, cutting off any supply of air.
Trembling hands rattled through the air, attempting to claw at the raised arm which kept him held in place. But to no avail. Against the hand, he could feel his heart throbbing in his throat, the other had ambushed and overpowered him, none of his attempts to fight for freedom apparently to succeed.
All this time, he’d escaped the fate of the others, captured by the infamous Legion-kun, and now—… It crossed Aichi’s mind that perhaps he was to revive the conflict, without the realization that it wasn’t Legion whom had him at his mercy. And it wouldn’t. Desperate to free himself, Aichi scrambling as best he could while his consciousness began to wane, vision growing hazy and darken.
Never a glimpse of emotion or sympathy marked those identical, albeit blank, features before Aichi blacked out.
The fight died down quickly, Aichi slumped against the wall and supported only by the tainted future's hand. Finally, with certainty that he was unconscious, he eased the body from the wall, draping an arm over his shoulder and placed a hand on the far hip. To anyone, the scene would have been particular enough; one twin of someone assumed to have no present duplicate smeared with dry blood dragging the other, who hung limply against him.
And he had a brief understanding of the city's backstreets, managing to navigate his way back to the apartment which had been his home since arriving in the timeline. Fortunate enough, as dusk fast approached and no-one had stumbled across the suspicious sight.
Up the staircase, he hauled the sleeping other and re-entered the dwelling, making sure to lock the door so no-one might intrude and laid Aichi onto the floor and stripped off his white jacket. All that remained was preparation for the trap.
Kidnapping was never nothing that stood out as necessary, it was simply a matter of opportunity, and Aichi had walked right into Void's grasp. And yet... within the unconscious body laid out before him, he could sense himself. Itself.
Void was still in this Aichi; a Seed unbroken - a Seed like his own. Somehow, it hadn't consumed him by now, a miracle by itself, but it also doomed this one to face the same future that his captor had endured.
Searching through the drawers within the kitchen, there were tools to keep Aichi secured; thick gauze from the first-aid kit which would keep his wrists bound behind his back, following suit with his ankles, and a cloth fitted between his lips to serve as a gag, fastened around the back of his head.
In any case, it was rather bizarre to gaze down upon a body identical to his own, when there had been no copies within his timeline, let alone to be standing over it having kidnapped, bound and gagged the younger version of himself, using him as a hostage for a cruel plan.
Reaching into the pocket of Aichi's jacket, he removed the phone that weighed it down, tossing the cloth aside and clutching the item with an almost smug glance down before tapping down on the screen with his fingertip. If there was one thing he'd learned from the past five or so years, it was that working alone wouldn't work for anyone fighting for what they believed right.
TO: Chrono-kun FROM: Aichi
[Text] Contrary to the above, this isn't Sendou Aichi. But I have him. [Text] The apartment from which you escaped with Ryuenji Tasuku. Come alone and tell no-one if you wish Aichi to remain unharmed.
Broken Mirror: Bad Luck
With Tasuku taken care of, that panic which had pushed Void back, even marginally would wear off. Managing to distance himself from the hospital once more, he'd become convinced it was safe for the boy. His temporary hold was bound to slip some time, when Void clawed him away.
Around the body, Link Joker's miasma revived itself, swirling around the paralyzed form by its toxic hold, restricting any sort of movement between its frozen touch and the burning pain that ravaged everything beneath Aichi's flesh.
Instead of screams, he kept quiet; biting down on his lip and wincing, swallowing such cries out of hopelessness. In spite of all his fighting, he knew it was futile; Void have control of his body, a noose around his neck. Slowly but surely dissolving his very being (what was left of it). And it would do so without much problem.
Searching the area it had resumed control in, it was somewhat poetic that it recognized the suburbs as somewhere relatively close to the Sendou family home.
People that forgot him; he hadn't been a Sendou for three years... There was a pang that struck in the pit of his stomach; Aichi's fondness with the setting, homesickness...
The feet carried him by their own volition, in the direction of the building, and he'd stand, in front of the house constructed beside, gazing at the familiar gate through which he'd travel outwards every morning, headed onto a normal day of school or Vanguard.
Nostalgic, really...
But from the doorway, someone emerged. And had it been anyone else, he'd had taken off, irrespective of if his fleeing image might have been captured by the sight of the departing side. Except... this was someone he could use.
Ignorant to his spectator, Aichi - this timeline's Aichi - was heading out, calling a fond farewell to his family, who, by some miracle, had never forgotten him. And suddenly, in the matter of seconds, a wicked plot had fallen into place right in front of him.
Fate had always been cruel to Sendou Aichi, but between the two of them, sharing face, voice and everything, there was only one Aichi.
Family Gathering
Quick footsteps racing towards the hospital and up to the desk when he finally reached it, asking for directions in panicked tone. It was unlike him, but on this occasion, that didn’t matter any longer. It wasn’t about maintaining the image he wanted other people to see him as. This… was about finding an answer to his question. As soon as he knew his way, Kai swiftly made his way to the specified room.
Arriving after several minutes of reading ever sign to double check his designated path, he stood silently by the door, peering through the glass, only to be met with a sight he never thought he’d see for some time; Aichi, who had been sat by the bedside. And Jack… Who he assumed was who he saw flying overhead while he wandered the streets. Kai could never mistake Tasuku’s buddy. But, to be heading here… of all places…
Making his way in, as quietly as possible so he wouldn’t disturb anyone, he stopped directly behind Aichi; brows furrowing as he gazed down towards Tasuku laying in the bed.
No… Why…
Kai moved around the seat to kneel beside it, extending a hand to hold the smaller one of what he cherished most in his life, besides his partner. Thumb rubbing back and forth over tiny knuckles, the brunet remained silent; only a small sigh was all that came from his lips. He wanted to know what happened, but couldn’t bring himself to speak up. Sad, upset, hurt — those emotions were barely half of his feelings at the current moment. Seeing his son in this condition… It was painful… Enough so to cause physical ache.
Consumed in watching the youngster as long as he could hold out, Aichi had been oblivious to the appearance of his partner until the brunet shuffled into view, reaching out to take hold of the sleeping boy's hand and rubbed it tenderly. It was almost too good to believe; for Aichi, it was a dream - the three of them together.
And even then... one was apart from the other two. Worse, he was verging on a drop into Link Joker's control; Jack distrusted him, Kai would be heart-broken and Tasuku--...
Despite all that, it simply didn't register to begin with, his lips quivered, struggling to voice out anything whatsoever. Until finally, the name would tumble from his lips.
"K- Kai-kun...!"
How could he face the brunet now, when riddled with power and having failed to uphold the one vow left that he'd have to, and after everything it had cost the pair. How cruel... that they'd be reunited too late.
The Final Act
”—Oh, I do intend to follow,” the armordragon snipped quite abrasively. ”I can’t allow you to remain alone with him… After all, your influences will taint his mind if you remain close for too long. Don’t you recall anything from the last time?”
Tasuku having writhed and suffered whilst fighting off Void’s suggestions.. Even if Aichi’s consciousness was pulling though in this occasion, his personality and mind were warped and mingled with that of the dark entity within his heart. Even if he wished to do something about this, it would ultimately have to wait—Jackknife’s responsibility and care went towards his Buddy—his family—first and foremost. As they arrived at the front of the building, Jackknife waiting until Aichi boarded off completely and safely, did he revert to his card form, a small orb of shining light for now, giving pursuit as Tasuku was rushed through the front doors..
No comment; there was nothing to argue about - if anything, Jack had been completely right and there was no need to confirm or deny. Aichi's presence had been dangerous for Tasuku, irrespective of whether he or Void was in control; as long as he was unwell, he was a threat to the boy.
Disembarking from the ride, Aichi ran a brief check over the boy's condition, murmuring a thank you to the dragon before bolting inside, yelling for help on behalf of the child in his arms, to get some urgent attention from the necessary department that would perform whatever surgery to save his life.
-------
Some hours had passed before the mayhem died down and Aichi was seated beside a bed in which Tasuku had been assigned, watching the younger recover from the life-saving operation which, according to the staff, should have meant he'd get away with minimal damage.
Jack had never left his side, even during the procedure, while Aichi waited from wherever he was taken, checked for any injuries himself, and somehow, escaped the detection of anyone whom had treated him after collapsing.
In one seat, Aichi leaned forward, his hand inches from Tasuku's, but never grabbing, Jack's words ringing in his head about how dangerous it was to maintain physical contact with the patient. In the other, his coat, thickly slathered with Tasuku's blood and chilled from the winter atmosphere outside, but it had done the job.
Whilst watching the boy, Aichi had become somewhat dulled in senses, fizzling out with the danger having passed and adrenaline no longer pumping furiously.
"Jack... You're right... about what you said before".
