And yet somehow this is my first time kicking it!
Writers have two modes and they are "i haven't written in three weeks and i am rotting from the inside and everything feels wrong and i don't know who i am anymore" and "i wrote for four hours straight and forgot to eat and it's dark outside and when did that happen and i feel like a god" and there is nothing in between. no chill. no medium setting. just famine or feast and a very confused nervous system.

art block is your brain telling you to do studies.
draw a still life. practice some poses. sketch some naked people. do a color study. try out a different technique on a basic shape.
art block doesnt stop you from drawing, it stops you from making your drawings look the way you want them to. and thats because you need to push your skills to the next level so you can preform at that standard
think of it as level grinding for your next work.
As a scientific illustrator- this is 100% true and going to review your basics will fix it every goddamn time.Ā Not only does it keep your skills sharp, when youāre not emotionally invested in the final product of a piece, you relax and your brain makes more/better art juice for you.Ā So, when you get back to that big/important piece?Ā Youāll know what to do and how to do it.

Writerās block means you need to relearn the whole alphabet. idiot.
For writers block- same thing. Do Studies.
Write a description of an object. write the weather today. Write a made up characterization of a random photo of an actor from the internet as to the character they are in that picture. Write a little story about your petās day. Write about spilling soup and make it super dramatic and tragic. Write about someoneās day being ruined and make it funny. Write a meetcute coffeeshop AU of two OCs youād never put together- maybe from different stories. Write them breaking up.
Write a bunch of short stuff meant for no audience ever and super duper self indulgent.

I found out relatively recently that it really helps if I write short fiction surrounding the novels I write. Like oh? Iām stuck for a bit? Ooh there was that section I wanted to explore but doesnāt fit in the plot really. There was that what-if that could never happen in the actual story but would be fun to explore. It keeps me in the charactersā headspace (tho thatās not always what Iām needing) but not right where they are exactly.
Yes! I have gotten past writersā block multiple times by writing drabble collections. Making something coherent happen in just 100 words is a very different challenge from writing a long story and it also lets me get past plot points that I donāt want to explore in-depth.
I am also going to have to start drawing studies nowā¦
I joined a writing group that used journalling prompts to get through a bad case of writers block and it really helped

I grinned so big and wide when I saw this ask, it was cartoonish. I probably looked like that one ominous Jerma grinning meme, actually. Anyway. PALMER QUOTES
1.) Go on, you can be all that you desire! There is no limit to where you can go!
This is one of my favorite quotes ever, I think. Itās short and simple, but the wording and the sentiment behind it make me really, genuinely excited. I need to write it down and stick it somewhere on my wall where I can see it all the time. Being all that you desire, no limit to where you can goā¦ Palmer should start a motivational poster line. Heād make even MORE bank at the Battle Tower gift shop.
2.) You know, the thing I love the most about being the Tower Tycoon is taking in the view from up here. As I look over all of Sinnoh, I think about how each day starts with a brand new Trainer taking the first step on their PokƩmon journey.
I really love the image this quote givesāPalmer standing at one of the Towerās big windows, cup of coffee in hand, morning breaking and pouring in while he reflects on what led to this moment and where heāll go from here, and the fact that somewhere, someone else's journey is only just beginningā¦ This quote is also what inspired my piece for In Pursuit of Victory, the Pokemon Battle Facility zine, because I wanted to capture the moment where Palmer shows Barry the sweeping view of Sinnoh from above for the first time.
3.) Bravo! I feel inspired in my heart! It brings back a memory of that day long ago... I went out to the lake with your father that day... We were attacked by a wild PokƩmon. We fended it off, but I don't recall how. It was that desperate. That was my first step as a Trainer. I wonder if the professor is doing well?
Palmer lore drop!! I love that the beginning of his and the protagās fatherās journey mirrors Barryās and the protagās. Itās not specified that it was a Starly attack as the protagās and Barryās was, so I guess we donāt really know what it wasāafter all, Bidoof can also appear in the Lake Verity tall grassābut itās likely enough that it was Starly and anyway itās fun to imagine it that way XD I wonder if Palmer was also the one that suggested going to the lake, dragging the protagās dad into the tall grass, like his son will with his childhood friend, someday...
But itās also kinda nuts because like. This is one of the only times that the protagās father is mentioned?? (Johanna has a single one-off quote that mentions him, but she doesn't give nearly as much info as Palmer does here.) Thereās actually another quote of Palmerās where he mentions that the protag is āvery skilled,ā the same as their father was, implying that the protag's dad was/is also a Trainer (although Palmer notably refers to the protag's dad, or at least his role as a Trainer, in the past-tense, while Johanna refers to him fully in the present-tense. Could refer to the fact that he's no longer a Trainer, or that he's simply not around anymore...? Who knows!)
The lore of Palmer and the protagās father having been friends back in the day, and their kids ending up as childhood friends, is really sweet! Itās just weird that one of the only times the protagās dad is mentioned is locked behind a post-game battle facility rematch that many folks might not even get to? (I know Iāve never really messed with battle facilities myself so shrug) Guess it's a neat tidbit for folks who choose to make it that far! Anywayyyy lots to unpack with this quote haha
4.) "What theā¦ Whoops, sorry about that! I was in a rush. Oh, wait a second... Aren't you... You're <player> from Twinleaf! Wow, that brings back memories! So, if you're here, he can't be far behind... This should be fun. See you!"
This quote is interesting to me for a number of reasons. 1.) Itās the one where a grown adult man whoās probably at least six feet tall (at least as I HC) full-on barrels into a child because he wasnāt looking where he was going, which is pretty funny as it is, but also great because it implies that oh. Like father, like son, huh? And 2.) When he says āthat brings back memories,ā it makes me think of Palmer chaperoning some of Dawn (my protag) and Barryās playdates, which is a nice thought :)
5.) Now goāyour adventure's just begun! Reach out into the vast world before you, that endless time and borderless space, and grab it for yourself! Walk on!

As a side-note, I always enjoy reading Palmerās quotes because he sounds not only energetic, but very formal, too. His dialogue is bright with grandeur (in a good way!) and I love to imagine his movements, body language, etc. I Really Really Like Him, if you couldnāt tell!

BIRDS!!!! Yāknow itās funny, when I rbād that post I was low-key hoping someone would ask for my top 5 birdsā¦ā¦. you read my mindddd ^_^
My predictable #1: PIGEONS!!!! All pigeons everā¦ I do love them so <33 sadly I live in an area that doesnāt quite have pigeons (though there are plenty of mourning doves, which are of the same family!!) but I do love to see images/videos of pigeons, and ofc I get unreasonably excited seeing them irl when I visit places that to have them <3
Osprey! Theyāre so cool!! Iāve seen a good few before (some with whole fish in their claws!), and theyāre so majestic, but they also have those piercing eyes that go O.O theyāre very awesome!!
Northern cardinals!! I love these, with their vibrant red feathers, darting aboutā¦ Ofc the females do have more muted feathers, but they still stand out with those bright orange beaks! We had a cardinal nest in one of our trees for a bit, low enough that you could see the nest and its materials at just above eye-height (but you couldnāt quite see into the nest). It was really neat to see that pair of cardinals flitting around,, knowing their chicks were in the nest...
Fruit doves!! (asker it was you in fact who introduced me to these hehe) They have such incredible vibrant feathers, and amazing names, too. Like, the superb fruit dove is superb! Thatās correct! After a refresher on the diff fruit doves, I think my faves are the wompoo fruit dove (that smattering of golden flecks along the wings is so gorgeous!) and the golden fruit dove (so very yellowā¦!)
Bowerbird (also learned about these from you haha) because Iām enthralled by their nest displays, and the variety of objects they use to craft their nests. Not only that, but the way they use sticks in their structures? These birds are proper architects. I def recommend that folks check out the bowerbird!!
Honorable mentions go to the pileated woodpecker, blue jay, red-tailed hawk, and roseate spoonbill (theyāre pink and have spoons for bills?thatās pretty cool if you ask me).
