Sara Jacobsen, 19, grew up eating family dinners beneath a stunning Native American robe.
Not that she gave it much thought. Until, that is, her senior year of high school, when she saw a picture of a strikingly similar robe in an art history class.
The teacher told the class about how the robe was used in spiritual ceremonies, Sara Jacobsen said. “I started to wonder why we have it in our house when we’re not Native American.”
She said she asked her dad a few questions about this robe. Her dad, Bruce Jacobsen, called that an understatement.
“I felt like I was on the wrong side of a protest rally, with terms like ‘cultural appropriation’ and ‘sacred ceremonial robes’ and ‘completely inappropriate,’ and terms like that,” he said.
“I got defensive at first, of course,” he said. “I was like, ‘C’mon, Sara! This is more of the political stuff you all say these days.’”
But Sara didn’t back down. “I feel like in our country there are so many things that white people have taken that are not theirs, and I didn’t want to continue that pattern in our family,” she said.
The robe had been a centerpiece in the Jacobsen home. Bruce Jacobsen bought it from a gallery in Pioneer Square in 1986, when he first moved to Seattle. He had wanted to find a piece of Native art to express his appreciation of the region.

“I just thought it was so beautiful, and it was like nothing I had seen before,” Jacobsen said.
The robe was a Chilkat robe, or blanket, as it’s also known. They are woven by the Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian peoples of Alaska and British Columbia and are traditionally made from mountain goat wool. The tribal or clan origin of this particular 6-foot-long piece was unclear, but it dated back to around 1900 and was beautifully preserved down to its long fringe.
“It’s a completely symmetric pattern of geometric shapes, and also shapes that come from the culture,” like birds, Jacobsen said. “And then it’s just perfectly made — you can see no seams in it at all.”
Jacobsen hung the robe on his dining room wall.
After more needling from Sara, Jacobsen decided to investigate her claims. He emailed experts at the Burke Museum, which has a huge collection of Native American art and artifacts.
“I got this eloquent email back that said, ‘We’re not gonna tell you what to go do,’ but then they confirmed what Sara said: It was an important ceremonial piece, that it was usually owned by an entire clan, that it would be passed down generation to generation, and that it had a ton of cultural significance to them.“
Jacobsen says he was a bit disappointed to learn that his daughter was right about his beloved Chilkat robe. But he and his wife Gretchen now no longer thought of the robe as theirs. Bruce Jacobsen asked the curators at the Burke Museum for suggestions of institutions that would do the Chilkat robe justice. They told him about the Sealaska Heritage Institute in Juneau.
When Jacobsen emailed, SHI Executive Director Rosita Worl couldn’t believe the offer. “I was stunned. I was shocked. I was in awe. And I was so grateful to the Jacobsen family.”
Worl said the robe has a huge monetary value. But that’s not why it’s precious to local tribes.
“It’s what we call ‘atoow’: a sacred clan object,” she said. “Our beliefs are that it is imbued with the spirit of not only the craft itself, but also of our ancestors. We use [Chilkat robes] in our ceremonies when we are paying respect to our elders. And also it unites us as a people.”
Since the Jacobsens returned the robe to the institute, Worl said, master weavers have been examining it and marveling at the handiwork. Chilkat robes can take a year to make – and hardly anyone still weaves them.
“Our master artist, Delores Churchill, said it was absolutely a spectacular robe. The circles were absolutely perfect. So it does have that importance to us that it could also be used by our younger weavers to study the art form itself.”
Worl said private collectors hardly ever return anything to her organization. The federal Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act requires museums and other institutions that receive federal funding to repatriate significant cultural relics to Native tribes. But no such law exists for private collectors.

Worl says the institute is lobbying Congress to improve the chances of getting more artifacts repatriated. “We are working on a better tax credit system that would benefit collectors so that they could be compensated,” she said.
Worl hopes stories like this will encourage people to look differently at the Native art and artifacts they possess.
The Sealaska Heritage Institute welcomed home the Chilkat robe in a two-hour ceremony over the weekend. Bruce and Gretchen Jacobsen traveled to Juneau to celebrate the robe’s homecoming.
i think we all have that one piece of media we like that’s basically “i love this thing, but i dont think everyone should watch this thing and would not categorically recommend it to other people i know, this thing has a lot of problems and i am the first person you should ask if you want to know a long list of criticisms, but i REALLY ENJOY THIS THING” its like holding up a can of trash to everyone else and saying ”you are a reasonable person and you would not enjoy touching this garbage and i value that about you” and then pouring it out on the ground and rolling around in it yourself

So this is just a PSA, y'all should never sign a contract until you read it. I’m talking in rl right now. I just got through reading my employee handbook/service contract and my bosses slipped in a lot of bullshit like telling me I can’t complain about my job on social media, demanding I work off the clock in the name of good service, expects me to show up on time during inclimate weather, and considered disability or religious accommodation a direct threat to the company.
These are all things I took issue with and brought to my employer for further discussion before signing the contract. Most of my coworkers signed without reading, treating it like an internet terms of service contract.
Tl;dr real life is serious shit, lawyers write contracts to protect your employer FROM YOU, read contracts before you sign them - fucking ARGUE about contracts before you sign them
Also important to note, and something my bf has repeated to me many times: a contract is a negotiation until it is signed, and YOU ARE ALLOWED TO AMEND IT. Tech companies often put some bs in there about “we own everything you make while you work for us” which broadly applied also means anything done on your own time. He always ALWAYS does write-in amendments with initial and date to state that they only own things done FOR the company, on company time, because there have been companies that enforced that bullshit when somebody had a personal side project the company decided they wanted to steal. There’s only one company that threw a fit at his attempts to amend it and he considered that a huge red flag and refused to sign, turned down the job.
Never. EVER. Sign shit without reading it. Also: if your prospective employer won’t let you take the thing home to read before you sign it and says you need to sign it then and there THAT IS A RED FLAG. The job I had that turned out to be abusive as shit was like that. Every other job I’ve been able to bring the contract home to my parents to have a more experienced set of eyes on it. It’s also common practice in some fields to have one’s attorney look over it before signing. So never let them tell you that you can’t look over it with someone else. That’s a fat load of shit. For “lower level” jobs they may not accept amendments to the contract but if they won’t even give you the proper time to read it over, they’re trying to pull some bullshit on you and you’re going to regret it if you sign. Even if there’s nothing bad in what you signed it’s an example of how they are going to treat you while you’re there. Take it to heart and run like fucking hell.
Please also tell your coworkers. Inform others. Tell everyone. Please, for the lovee of everything TELL PEOPLE THEY ARE ALLOWED TO DO THESE THINGS.
Companies BANK on the fact you’re not going to read it. Then they slip in shit like ‘you can’t talk about your wages’ because they want you to keep quiet, so thy can pay that guy six bucks, and pay the guy over there fifteen and pay you eight. They want you to accept it all blindly. PLEASE DON’T STAY BLIND.
Yes, I’ve lost out on jobs because I wanted to read it and they didn’t want me to. Or they wanted m to resign and I said no to to the things they added that I pointed out were unfair and borderline illegal.
Read shit. Tell everyone else to read shit. BE INFORMED.
Never ever ever sign shit without reading and re-reading it! Take it home, show it to someone more experienced, if you can, show it to a lawyer. A contract is supposed to work for both sides. A company in Toronto tried to make me sign a contract with clause that in event of me leaving the job I will not work in a similar position anywhere in Ontario. Yeah, right, not enforceable in court, dudes, you can’t prevent me from making a living. Read the shit and don’t let them intimidate you.
“The Food and Drug Administration has stopped routine food safety inspections of seafood, fruits, vegetables and many other foods at high risk of contamination because of the federal government’s shutdown…”
Most companies are probably going to continue their regular food safety procedures, but a few things you can do to reduce some personal risk:
Buy hard, solid veggies and fruits (apples, melons) or ones with rinds (bananas are probably fine). Scrub the peel/rind thoroughly with soap and water before consumption.
The more solid and dense the meat, the less likely it is for contamination to spread very far. Buy your meat in solid cuts, NOT GROUND. Especially not ground chicken rn, salmonella bad.
Cook things thoroughly. Follow guidelines for the internal temperatures meat is supposed to reach and stick to those guidelines. Use a meat thermometer. Make your steaks well done for a while.
I’d stay away from shellfish as a whole if I were you. The diseases you can get from it are some of the nastier ones. No sushi for a while, too. If you have fish, make sure it was frozen following anti-parasitic guidelines and cook thoroughly.
AVOID LEAFY GREENS. This is where we’ve been seeing the most outbreaks lately, so be very careful.
The pregnant, elderly, immunocompromised, and the very young are the ones most at risk in an outbreak. If you are in one of these groups, be extremely cautious and avoid soft cheeses and prepackaged deli meats. Check on friends and family in these groups. Report symptoms of foodborne illness to a doctor so they can report to the state health depts that are still running.
Even with these in mind, remember that most outbreaks of foodborne illness are due to things like improper cooking and storage. Stay safe out there, folks 💙
Hey y’all! So, my sister and I adopted two male guinea pigs, one significantly older than the other (his name is Grandpa) at 4 years of age.
Unfortunately, when we adopted him, we ended up not knowing an important detail: Grandpa has an upper respiratory infection. These infections can kill a young pig very fast, let alone a senior. Without treatment, the animal often suffocates or dies from multi organ failure. This is a clip of the characteristic ‘clicking’ sound when he inhales, a common sign of a URI.
We’d like to get him and the younger piggie (Lucifer) in for a check up, as they cohabitate.
We are looking at around 150$ out of pocket, just for the check up and treatment, not counting labs, prescriptions, etc. I’ll be honest: we do not have this money. At all. If Grandpa is going to live, we are going to need your help!
You can PayPal us ANYTHING at our PayPal.me/fowlerblack and please boost this!
A bit less than five years ago, I created a simple Word document to list my favorite fanfiction, so that if I wanted to reread something I could easily find it again. Two years ago today, I uploaded it as a proper multifandom rec list, having realized how huge the scale of it had gotten and its potential as more than just a reference for my own use. And now, it’s time for the semiannual public version update once again, bringing the uploaded file up-to-date with my continuously-updated personal copy.
With this expansion, the list goes from 1,541 to 1,599 total fics, from 97 to 99 fandoms represented, and from ~21.2 million to over 23.4 million words. (There’s a stats section that goes into more detail on such things at the end of the list document, if you’re interested.)

Special thanks to all the authors of fics newly added for this version (listed are the ones I could find tumblrs of):
So what you have here is a waka poem by Saigyō, a Buddhist monk during the end of the Heian period and start of the Kamakura period as the Imperial Court lost much of its power and the rest of Japan outside Kyoto descended into warfare between various clans. The art and culture of the mid to late Heian period was characterized by sorrow over inevitable change and wistfulness; the surviving literature is almost exclusively from the Imperial Court, but there was a deep, pervasive sense of the good times ending, that all the beautiful things that were being created would be lost to the ravages of time and nothing lasted forever. You see a kind of mood whiplash in a lot of the diaries, novels, and poetry of the time, where people will be having fun or admiring something pretty, then very quickly get depressed because soon it will be gone, and so will everything else. It’s most obvious with cherry blossoms, but you can see that sense of impermanence in tea ceremony, where the focus is on the little details and enjoying that moment in time and space because it’ll never be exactly the same.
So Saigyō came from a middle to upper class family, enough that he was literate, versed in poetry, and served as a guard for the retired Emperor Toba in his youth. At some point, he shaved his head and became a Buddhist monk. At the time, taking the tonsure meant withdrawing from society, and was almost a living death. It also involves severing all your ties to the world, because the goal was (and still is) to attain Enlightenment, which is difficult when for example, you love natural beauty deeply and feel sorrow when the last leaves have fallen, or all the petals are off the trees. This is something Saigyō struggled with, being drawn to the beauty of nature and thus unable to renounce the world entirely.
So in this poem, he tries to find a compromise. He knows he will eventually die, but if he had a choice, he’d prefer the last thing he sees to be the cherry blossoms under a beautiful springtime full moon. Considering this was in the early 11th century where antibiotics weren’t a thing, fires were rampant, and the rest of the country was becoming dangerous (infrastructure degraded in a hurry once you left Heian Kyo, and you were at the mercy of local warlords, ronin, and bandits, all things Saigyō was familiar with as he traveled all over Japan on pilgrimages or visits to distant temples), passing away under a cherry tree in bloom seems like a more pleasant way to go.
Context is super, super important when reading poetry from another culture and time period. Also, his Wikipedia article has more info here: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saigyō
okay, so i’m not sure if everyone heard of what happened on the bachelor vietnam a few weeks back, but basically one contestant professed her love for another one on national TV:
at first, after the contestant minh thu professed her love for the other contestant truc nhu, they walked out of the show together:
but apparently afterwards, the bachelor quoc trung met up with truc nhu and convinced her to remain on the show, which pretty much broke hearts everywhere:
BUT i just found out that minh thu and truc nhu are officially together as a couple!!!

An EXCELLENT animation joke here!
Please note that all of this has been animated on 1’s(which is to say that each drawing is only being held for 1 frame), where most anime is animated on 3’s(each drawing held for 3 frames).
This makes the animation look especially fluid, but is extremely time consuming to do - even classic Disney cartoons tended to animate on 2’s as much as possible!
Also worth noting is the beautiful flow of S to C curves in the long hair - this is another thin that is often heavily simplified in anime.
What’s more, the entire shot is complicating the animation - the low angle with multiple head turns, the way the hand interacts with the hair, and the extreme foreshortening of the hand as it moves towards the camera.
Lovely animation combined with a wonderful awareness of the skills and pitfalls of the industry!
(This clip is sourced from an anime called Joshiraku, and the rest of it appears to be animated in a more traditional anime style)
So apparently Senators Collins and Murkowski have pissed of the white male members of the GOP to the point where some members have said that they’d challenge them to a duel if they were in South Texas
Anyway so I’m calling Rep. Farenthold later to accept on Sen. Collin’s behalf and I’m choosing Fists. Can take place in Iowa because if two parties agree to mutual combat, under state law it is totally legal here.
SO I CALLED HIS DC OFFICE AND SAID BASICALLY THE SAME THING I SENT VIA EMAIL.
After about 20 seconds of dead silence, the staffer let out kinda a little laugh and said “Well ma’m, I’ll be happy to pass on your…”
“I’m not joking.”
“Ma’m?”
“You think I’m joking. I am dead serious. You want my address? Or I’ll meet him at the airport. I am absolutely serious about this. Oh, and as the challenged party, I get to pick weapons. I choose fists.”
Another 20 seconds of somehow even deeper silence.
“I…I’ll pass your challenge on to the congressman.”
“No. He issued the challenge. I’m accepting. Unless he’s backing out like the spineless coward he is.”
More silence. “I…I’ll let Congressman Farenthold know, ma’m.”
“You do that.”
ANYWAY SO HOW DID YOU ALL SPEND YOUR LUNCH BREAK TODAY.
FOLLOW UP; He has proved himself a faithless coward and refused to meet me in honest physical combat, so I cursed him. Specifically, called on his past misdeeds to be visited upon him and justice he’s evaded to find him.
He’s now retiring after his history of sexually assaulting women came to light and will not be seeking re-election anywhere.
I published a link to a change.org petition regarding TheMighty’s awful treatment of Autistic people with an article they published called “Meltdown Bingo.” (I hope I don’t have to explain just how gross that is.) That petition is now closed, the article removed, but I would encourage all of you to avoid TheMighty in general.
I’ve wanted to make a post about them for a while, but I have not had the energy to collect information and sources. Admin E and I hold the personal opinion that they are harmful towards the community. You are free to make your own decisions. But based on some reading I did today, I feel it’s important that we take a stand and voice our opinions here.

Fuck anyone who says rape culture doesn’t exist. Stories like this make me hate America more and more for treating women and girls with such dehumanization.
“Ross disclosed the rape victim’s address to Mirasolo and ordered Mirasolo’s name to be added to the child’s birth certificate — all without the victim’s consent or a hearing, according to Kiessling.
An assistant prosecutor on this, Eric Scott, told me she had granted her consent, which was a lie — she has never been asked to do this and certainly never signed anything,” Kiessling said.”
They literally gave a rape victim’s address out to the rapist himself. Words cannot describe how disgusted I am with this country’s justice system. There’s something very sinister about American’s desire to protect rapists.
