the thing about having hope is that it is so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so difficult. but you have to do it anyway
this is a very informal startup call because I've been thinking a lot about kick-starting my writing muse. My track record over the past year plus has been bad, but I'm desperate to think and spit out things that are not work.
So if you don't mind a starter that may not be extravagant and may be 2-3 paragraphs bc I'm stretching my metaphorical muscles and will be inspired by/based on my 2025 wrapped, please reply with a number from 1 - 100.
Thank you in advance š

she has her priorities straight
@teltinsurvivor was faced with a wild cupcake! from here
As if trying to entice the biotic, Kelly gently tipped the cupcake towards Jack. To the first question, she said nothing; merely shrugged her shoulders. The second, though, she had to answer--only because Jack had been nice enough to grace her with yet another nickname.
"Not at all," Kelly admitted calmly, setting the frosted treat down despite Jack's lacking acceptance. "I'm getting on everyone's good side with cupcakes. Y'all are getting to antsy for my liking.
"Think of it as...an attempt to boost crew morale."
Jack narrowed her eyes at the redhead though she was unable to control her expression, her lips stil curved up slightly giving a hint of a smile. She didn't trust Cerberus and she was sure the psychologist had been planted on the ship to gain people's trust. Sure as hell explained her off-puttingly friendly behavior. But for as much as she hated the organization, she'd take any luxury she'd get if she already had to be stuck with them.
Taking the cupcake the biotic didn't waste any time, taking a generous bite of the sweet dessert.
Holy shit it was good.
"Not bad. Maybe you'll make it to the bottom of my list of 'Cerberus employees on this ship I want to paint the walls with' if you keep making me cupcakes."
Kelly met Jack's narrow-eyed stare with a blink of beguiling innocence. She was aware of her reputation, and was unfortunately familiar with the reactions that followed, but so far, she hadn't met anyone who'd said no to free cupcakes.
Feigning indifference wasn't something Kelly thought she could pull off when she was, more or less, trying to get into Jack's good graces, but she couldn't help but smile at the small win.
"Must be a very long list, then. What kind of cakes do you like?"

A shake of the head followed Kellyās question. She felt no desire to talk about the events that had unfoldedā she rarely talked about things like that. Most of the time talking about it stirred up more negative emotions than it brought comfort or relief. And in that moment she had no idea what to say at all. Gillian was perfectly comfortable with Kelly taking the lead of the conversation (and she preferred it that way).
However, there was one thing she wondered about.
āWhy did you join Cerberus?ā
Shepard had mentioned that most of the people aboard were ex-Cerberus. Most of the squad wasnāt, but the personnel aboard - scientists, doctors, engineers, and such consisted mostly of former Cerberus members. Exceptions were Dr. Karin Chakwas, the engineers Gabby Daniels and Kenneth Donnelly, and the pilot Jeff Moreau, who were ex-Alliance and had served alongside Cerberus on the SR2 but never joined their ranks for more than a temporary alliance.
Considering the Commander hadnāt mentioned Kelly Chambers being among the people who werenāt with Cerberus, Gillian assumed she had worked for The Illusive Man as well.
It's a question that takes Kelly by surprise. With the recent revelation (to her, and some of the crew at least) of Cerberus activities over the years, Kelly has been plagued by shame that threatens to drown her when she recalls the defensive comments she'd made not just to Shepard, but to the alien and former Alliance crew members who'd known what Cerberus was truly about.
The same shame makes her gulp silently as she briefly avoids Gillian's gaze.
She doesn't owe the girl an answer. She should be asking the questions. She should--could actually deflect...
She dons a sour expression before inhaling deeply and exhaling slowly. "I..." She begins, leaning back in her seat and resisting the urge to cross her arms over her chest.
"I felt I owed it to him, the Illusive Man," Kelly answers softly, gaze still downcast. "He saved my life." And it's not a fact she has admitted to many. "I was on a cruiser. To cut a ong story short, batarians took over and we didn't..." She winces softly, screams of fear nearly piercing her eardrums; the harried whispers interwoven with fear and worry about who'd be next--
"We didn't know what would happen, but Cerberus showed up. They took care of things..." Softly, she adds, "He took care of me. And I thought that was what Cerberus stood for: taking care of our own."
Jack was used to it. To being called a psychopath, revolting, mean, evil. But for as much as she would internalize those burning words, she would never forget how all of the people that had ever called her either belonged in the exact category they placed Jack in, or simply didn't know shit about shit. She wasn't sure in which category Kelly belonged. To be fair, Kelly might not even believe their words, but Jack strongly assumed that she held the same opinion about Jack as the rest of the Cerberus crew. None of those lapdogs seemed capable of looking beyond the surface, all of them stuck neck-deep in the Illusive Man's bullshit.
Her eyebrows raised as she registered the redhead's next words. Not without reason? Her grip on her fork tightens and she contemplates the idea of stabbing that fork into the psychologist's hand. Not that she'd do it, but the idea was damn tempting in that moment.
That desire left her quickly though, replaced by sheer confusion as Kelly went on. Her answer was the last thing that Jack had expected. So she thought this was about the warden?
"Look, I have no idea where this is going", Jack admitted, puzzled by the sudden mention of the warden. Truth be told, while it felt satisfying that someone was acknowledging her pain for once, she wasn't entirely sure what Kelly was trying to tell her. "I don't need your pity. And that fucking warden? He's dead, I'm over it, I'm not gonna have a fucking therapy session over it if that's what you want."
"Therapy session?" Surprisingly, that pulls a small laugh out of Kelly. "Oh, gosh, no." Her shoulders are still shaking when she abandons her cup for her fork. "Therapy sessions in the mess are inappropriate, let along a hazard for me." As if letting Jack in on a secret, one that touched on Jack's reaction, she leans forward with a small smile. "Too many projectiles."
"Just making breakfast talk." One that she'd rather not e having at all if she had way, but alas. Although she's not sure if she should think it serves Jack right for approaching her with the aim of causing trouble. "I assume that's why you approached me?"
Well, Shane supposed she had to concede that point. Concede, not admit defeat.
"I think the better question is why are you lookin' at me like it's weird I'd ask," she said. Hazel and red eyes glinted as she shifted her weight, then shrugged her shoulders. "I mean you had all these fun metaphors an' things so I jus' figured..." A pause. "Even with th' galaxy burnin' an' everythin'--"
A grin then, like a shark. "I hear extranet datin' can be fun. With all that swipin' left an' right an' whatnot. All work an' no play make Kelly a dull girl. Or... somethin'."
Words failed the yeoman for a short moment, lips moving uselessly before she finally settled with a quiet, "I can't tell if you're genuinely curious or just pulling my legs. And that worries me a bit."
"It's not that I haven't thought about it. It's just..." She exhales deeply, silently lamenting at the irony of being the one feeling like she's being examined under a microscope. How the tables have turned. "Feels a tiny bit pointless in the grand scheme of things to find something new."
"Well that depends on how much I want them on a one- way trip." Kar only half joked. The situation they were all in was rather unique, but her logic was if she died, then it was it, and if they managed a return trip from the core, then it was another notch to brag about in a cantina somewhere. A rather Mandalorian assessment.
"If I don't like them, then likely."
She smiled, just a little. Debating at first to give some further information. It wasn't too much to divulge a little more of her home.
"Real talk? Earth ships are a bit smaller compared to back home. Compared to the Venators I served on, the Normandy is very...uh..."
Kar tried to rifle through her brain for the right word in the right language.
"Tion'vaabi gar sibur..." She asked herself in rapid mutter. "Ah--cozy? Very small, and on top of each other."
She emphasized wither hands, making a gesture of a small gap between her palms.
Kelly probably should feel some modicum of scandalised, but Kar's no-nonsense delivery makes her giggle instead. It's a damning testament of how long she's spent around the various characters that make up the Normandy's squad that she just takes the answer in stride.
"What does that say about how you feel about yourself?" She poses, partly curious, partly in jest. "You agreed to join us on this alleged one-way trip."
Though she isn't a well of knowledge regarding ships, and had only served on one other ship before the Normandy, thinking of the frigate as small was novel for her. Though, she reasoned, it was much smaller compared to something like say the Destiny Ascension. "Are Venators much wider?"

Pineapple upside down cake! But don't ask me why because I honestly can't give an answer besides "it just seems so Kelly!"
