Prompt submission!
Grace leaving the biodome and exploring the dark surface of Erid, and the cities developed to operate in the pitch black. Now, Rocky's the one guiding a be-hamster-balled Grace through a foreign world.
love love love a role-reversal!! plus exploring erid?? worldbuilding prompt???? beautiful. no notes. 12/10. thank you so much!!

Incredibly charming to think about the translation assumptions around profanity being made by Dr. Ryland "what the fudging fudger" Grace and Rocky "everyone agrees he is swearing up a storm" the Eridian. What a beautiful duo to make first contact.
Okay so I rewatched the Project Hail Mary clip where Grace first encounters the Blip A and I had an extremely funny realization.
When Rocky tosses the zenonite container with his message inside and Grace doesn't get it and it just bounces off the hull the speed at which Rocky gets the second container ready (it's literally seconds) and sends it flying over makes me think that no, he didn't think Grace was stupid for not catching the first container, and instead implies the much funnier idea that Rocky had at least two, probably three, canisters with tiny star-system maps inside them locked and ready to go because he had no idea what kind of alien race he was about to encounter either and he realized he might have to try sending the message more than once.
Like, the enthusiasm this little guy has at finally meeting another person after 46 years and his hopefulness that Grace will be friendly is unmatched, he was probably multitasking making the star-maps while chasing the Hail Mary around going "why alien spaceship not hold still question? Rocky want to make friends!".
Sometimes you have to wonder if your pets make active choices or if they sometimes just end up like that
how else was he supposed to drink it?
>wow i can't wait to do things today!
>spends the whole day fighting with security cameras because my neighbour's brother/neighbour put spoiled butter in her mailbox
*through gritted teeth* no one has ever loathed themself into getting better, you have to love yourself a little to change

I like the idea of the Eridians figuring out telomeres and stopping Grace from aging, but I like the idea of them figuring it out by mistake even more. Like Adrian is supervising the stem cell grace-burger farms or whatever and someone is like "yeah after a while the DNA degrades we don't know what we're doing wrong" so they keep doing shit to prevent the very normal degredation and eventually they figure it out, and when they notice the same DNA degradation is in Grace's regular cells they just assume it's a complication from radiation exposure in space (since they know radiation damages DNA and that humans have mild resistance to low level radiation) so they just do the same thing they did with grace's stem cells to grace himself.
eventually they all figure out what happened and grace just groans and goes "okay, pack up the ship, we gotta go back to earth"
