When a person is suffering, the dulling effects of drugs seem desirable. When a person is clear and content, the mind-numbing effects of drugs are quite unpleasant and undesirable.

In true love there is no selfishness. Man selfishly seeks woman because he feels incomplete; he dwells in the pingala (left brain) and needs the energy of the woman to balance him and make him feel whole. Woman selfishly seeks man because she feels incomplete; she dwells in the ida (right brain) and needs the energy of the man to balance her and make her feel whole. Through yoga we activate the ida and pingala and transcend the limitations of gender. We are not men or women seeking human partners, but genderless souls dwelling in human body. The feeling of aloneness arises because we are separate from the knowledge of our true self. In reality we are seeking the vision of our true nature. We may see this reality by serving others selflessly, because this act rids us of ego and ego is the block to clear perception. Yet we live selfishly instead and this binds us to suffering, delusion, and mortality. To know true Love (which is the highest capacity of the soul) we must have faith and courage to give and serve and to love even those who wish to harm us. When we act in Love we make ourselves like the Lord, whose nature is unconditional Love.
