daily orca 146: T020 âKwatsiâ
(Valerie Shore)
kwatsi was a ~51 year old biggâs orca. he was born around 1963 to pandora, and was older brother to eucott and T021A. it wasnât until 1984 that kwatsi and his family were first identified, and he was given his name after kwatsi bay.
on february 13th, 1993, kwatsi, pandora, and eucott were seen in an altercation involving a group of southern resident orcas off the coast of nanaimo. J pod orcas were witnessed chasing the trio of transients and treating them aggressively. all the orcas seemed to be agitated; the transients were backed up against a cliff face, while the residents were angling in and almost appearing to push them against the rocks. the interaction went on for about half an hour until the transients escaped, and itâs one of the only recorded interactions between residents and transients.
kwatsi passed away in 2014.

a message for workaholics + people who call sunfish âuselessâ animals
font to celebrate coming back
Did you mean something else? Because I donât have any idea of what font I should do and in what manner
I genuinely do not like the fame orcas have been getting recently, especially for the now famous video where they ram a sunfish. Look it up unless you are for the faint of heart.
And the attention we have been getting is tiring. Sometimes it feels like theyâre going to farm a Jaws franchise out of us because the dolphin hate is insane.
We are badass, we are sadistic and we are psychopathic to them, because apparently, every non-human animal needs to have full knowledge of human morals and choices and whether or not to go against them.
Surely these whales know how bad it is and still do it anyway because theyâre the spawn of Satan! Itâs almost like this isnât nature where you have to fight to survive!
Will you ever remake steve-officai? [no force to do so, I'm just curious if you will]
I might, though the peace of having only one blog is something I like. But people seem to miss it so Iâll probably remake it and come back to the Officialverse.
In response to your other asks: You can make an orca Steve skin or just an orca skin. As for the SMP I wonât be able to join it since my Minecraft disc broke and we donât have the time to get another..
Seeing random orcas does not give me any euphoria. It is the same feeling as seeing a random human, that it is simply âone of my kinâ and thatâs it.
I do wonder why it is a popular way to affirm yourself. How well does it work anyways? Is that truly âyouâ or just an individual of your species that you have never met and most likely never will?
do any of you even enjoy reading or watching fiction at all? if i wanted the plot with virtually nothing else i would read the wikipedia page
There is a problem nowadays in the writing world where people expect you to write stories that change your brain for better for worse, ones that give you entirely new views on life.
Expecting ground-breaking stories that changes your brain chemistry and gives you a whole new perspective on life does not mean you canât have small scenes that develop the mains further.
Would it hurt to have a story with some flaws? Would it hurt if the story has filler scenes? Would it hurt if the characters had a break for once? Does it deepen your wound?
Your characters going to the local bookstore should not have hundreds of thousands of words behind it just to justify such a simple filler scene.
Should they be going to this bookstore to find a way to kill the big bad guy? Or just to find a book about their favourite interests and topics to read and pass the time?
Does everything need to be important to the story or can we simply use extras for character development and see how they behave in different environments?
Or does everybody need to be in peril, questioning their identity, trying to save their friend, fighting the evils of their life, or whatever is going on?
Sometimes we have to let them relax. Let them have tea, or relax with nature, or draw. Let them do anything else! Show the reader what theyâre like in private!
Sometimes the hero just needs to take off their cape. And thatâs okay! Let them do it!
You can make a movie with where the only white character is a man named Ray Cism whose one line of his 16 seconds of screen time is âI seriously hate women and minorities.â and youâll find fifty bajillion reader x Ray Cism fanfics and renaissance style drawings of him with a halo of golden light
This is certainly a bit petty; however, I have noticed a trend, especially recently, that many of the people making sweeping statements decrying physical experience and demanding we conform to a hard materialism, that we express experience only behind reality check and doublebookkeeping, that we "see a doctor" â as though many of us are not already within the psychiatric system to very mixed reviews â and that we be disallowed to exist within community (either the wider nonhuman community or even just our own spaces) have themselves identities which would be viewed as equally or more incredible by wider society. Certainly it is not wrong to have an identity which might not make sense to others or that the general public might view as outlandish or madness, however some people really need become aware they are in a glass house, and best not cast stones.
Hey can we not actually do this?
Orcas are not âhumans of the oceanâ. This implies that they are capable of understanding human concepts of morality, which we have no data to even remotely support.
What may seem horrific to us may be an adaptive survival strategy to them. For example, injuring prey and then allowing calves to practise hunting it is clearly a very successful way to pass on hunting skills.
This is unfortunately the danger of pushing this idea of the hyper intelligent animal thatâs âjust like us.â No. Theyâre not. Theyâre separated from us by millions of years of evolution and perceive and experience the world differently from us. Intelligence isnât on a scale with humans at the top - intelligence is a range of cognitive abilities, spanning across a vast spectrum and dependent on the needs of that species survival.
There is nothing in the literature to suggest that orcas are capable of human levels of reasoning and therefore it is ridiculous to call them âhumans of the oceanâ when they engage in behaviours that are not exactly uncommon in other social species.
Tampering and destroying human property also isnât new. Think about the kea in New Zealand that break off windshield wipers of cars seemingly for the fun of it.
Or, a personal anecdote, I recently had to take down my bird feeder camera because a sulphur crested cockatoo had deliberately bitten through the wire attaching the camera to the solar panel. There were seeds spread out for them to eat but they destroyed the wire instead - so no clear reinforcement value other than⊠fun?
Social learners like orcas are easily influenced and may do things just because itâs fun - which is likely what is happening in the Gilbrater Strait.
But that still doesnât mean we should be calling them âhumans of the oceanâ and perpetuating the idea that they are capable of human level reasoning. Or framing their behaviours as malicious as if theyâre aware of their actions and governed by morals. Thats a slippery slope into demonising animals and not helpful in any way.

Tips for cetaceans
Eat seafood! Whether itâs krill, fish or a mix.
IMPORTANT: Be sure to check for any unusual smells and sights. Any strong scent or unusual spot that looks off for what youâre eating should be checked.
For example, if your oysters smell strong or fishy, throw them away. Be sure to check with the people youâre buying from so you know that theyâre not poisoned.
If you are allergic, you can eat foods resembling your theriotypeâs diet
For example, eat fish crackers if your theriotype eats fish. Not only is this safer, but you also get affirmed as your kintype! That, and it has good taste.
Swim
If you have never swam before, I do recommend taking your first steps. You can also watch those mermaid technique videos.
You can get a monofin, swimming flippers or a mermaid tail if you want to customise one. Though they are more suited for fish, you can also make it work.
Vocalise!
There are two ways to do that as is possible by the human body, whistling and clicking your tongue.
I recommend the first one since they are extremely similar to actual whistling done by cetaceans. Clicking your tongue, especially against the roof or back of your mouth can stimulate echolocation, but it tires you real fast.
Interact with and make media of your theriotype
Play games where you can play as your theriotype (eg. Oceanic Testing 2 on Roblox). Preferably ones where you donât have to grind and/or waste your life away trying to get it.
Watch informative videos on your theriotype.. though this one is way harder considering how demonised dolphins are. If youâre a species of dolphin that isnât an orca or common bottlenose, you have to get used to the scraps unfortunately.
And if you are (like me), just expect to see a whole lot of misinformation from people who use ChatGPT and TikTok comments as a source.
Connect with nature
Unless it sends you in debt or the environment is extremely dangerous for you, I recommend going to places that are or resemble your kintypeâs habitat.
For example, I could go to a cold country close to the shore, or generally just a place close to the sea and walk along the beach or go for a swim,
This also works with any habitat you feel affirmed by or simply like visiting.
However, one thing you must not do is interact with wild animals.
They can and WILL harm you if they feel afraid! Do not risk it in order to be closer to your kintype, it is NOT worth it! Do you know how much I could talk about this?
Keep a safe distance and observe them, maybe take a picture or two and save them with you. But do not under any circumstance touch them, even if they ask for it.
That is a wild animal. It is not your pet nor your friend.
Get plushies of your kintype
If you are particularly social and/or want to create a pod of your own, buy plushies of your kintype. Theyâre cuddly and soft, but theyâre also with you, now and forever.
Swim with them, sleep with them, eat with them. You can even play with them! Whatever floats your boat is whatever you want and need! So enjoy it!
I've seen this a lot in therian, alterhuman and nonhuman social canine spaces and I think its something worth talking about.
A pack is just a family, its not this magical group so many younger folks make it out to be. My pack is full of humans because I am the only nonhuman, you don't have to be with other nonhumans to be in a pack.
It's also something you shouldn't form with strangers, pack bonding is intimate and familial. I don't think you should be making packs with strangers.
You also don't need a pack, its quite normal for younger wolves (and other social canines) to be loners for a bit until they form a pack of their own.
Packs aren't this big thing with hierarchy and structure and rules. Packs are literally just families, if you have a family you have a pack, its as simple as that
You guys are so close to getting it
Any diet you eat as [an animal] is [animal] food
Don't worry about your diet not fully mimicing the theriform animal's diet. You're an animal, and it's your food.
You can eat fruit salads as a tiger - it's tiger food. You can eat vanilla cupcakes as a wolf - it's wolf food. I can eat fried chicken as a hare - it's hare food.
It's simple.
