Phoenix Rises: The Reborn
E, 37k
Summary: Phoenixes were supposed to be a myth. Except Harry keeps dying, only to wake up later remembering the pain. It’s becoming quite the problem.
New Chapter
Excerpt:
Someone was crying. Magic was surrounding him—foreign magic. It wasn’t his, but it was comforting in a way. The magic wasn’t as nice as Draco’s, but it—
“Draco!” Harry gasped, the first inhale hitting his lungs with a familiar rush that he liked too much. It had been far too long since his last death. He had forgotten how exhilarating that first breath could be.
He forced himself to sit up, brushing aside the burning ash that always surrounded him after every rebirth. He blinked a few times, trying to get his eyes to focus before he glanced around, eyes widening on Draco’s distraught face and Snape’s calculating one.
“You got Snape?” Harry whispered, brushing off more ash as he wobbly stood up. Sometimes his limbs took a minute to remember how to function after a death.
“What was I supposed to do?” Draco yelled, hitting Harry several times. It hurt. “You were dead, Harry. I watched you die! I tried to catch you, but I wasn’t fast enough. These damn school brooms are terrible! Your neck was broken! You were dead, and it was my fault!”
Harry pulled Draco into a hug as tears soaked through his robes.
“It’s not your fault. I wasn’t paying attention to where I was going.”
“You wanted to go in, and I—”
“It’s not your fault,” Harry promised, eyes stinging. He was used to dying, used to the pain, used to waking up like nothing happened. What he wasn’t used to was having someone care. “It’s not the first time.”
“It will be the last.”
Ao3
I'm commenting this here instead of on AO3 so I can add things as I read and not forget them.
I can just tell I'm going to love this fic, because so far it has so many things I love, especially in canon rewrite fics: Snape being on Harry's side from before year 1, Draco and Harry becoming friends when they first meet, Harry being a creature, Harry's unique understanding of magic, Harry ending up in Slytherin...
I love the easy and casual friendship with Draco, how Harry immediately appreciates him even for his rambling, how they get each other when it comes to their family situation.
I also love how easily Harry trusts Snape, and that Snape doesn't judge or resent Harry but values him instead and decides to take him under his wing. I adored the "I made a friend moment", especially with Snape intervening at the mention of fire, it cracked me up.
I love seeing how well Draco and Harry get along, how they match and complete each other. I've always been a fan of those what-if scenarios where Harry ends up in Slytherin and is friends with Draco all along. Love how you kept the fact that Harry joined the Quidditch team first year but this version is even more interesting. Also I felt it when he said he would rather read books than fly that Harry was soon going to eat hid words and make the Quidditch team!
Man that Quidditch accident was intense! My eyes were glued to the words the whole time, I loved Snape's part in it and all his reactions, and the first time I could relax was when he said "I will assist you Mister Malfoy" and I literally snorted.
I am so loving Snape being on Harry's side, and bringing other people like Lupin around. And the lessons about phoenixes sure are interesting. "They all had companions? They all had a best friend?" I melted. Harry, my sweet angel child.
I wasn't expecting to see Sirius so soon but I love it. I'm so happy that Harry has all these trusted adults in his corner and that he can feel the love and pride he deserves. I love the strange family dynamic with the five of them and I can't wait to see where that's going to go. I also adore how Draco and Harry behave and communicate together.
Anyway, that was a long review but I haven't felt so excited about a canon rewrite in so long and I thought you should know I don't care about the length of the chapters, especially not if they're filled with so much good stuff as the first chapter was. Looking forward to the rest of it!
when reading a book, do you read the prologue/epilogue?
yes
prologue only
epilogue only
no
nuance (comments/tags)
Looking at the tags, a lot of people are blessedly unaware of the Discourse, for posterity:
do they think... that prologues and epilogues... which take place within the story and are very much inside of the same book as the rest of the pages... don't count as part of the book....???.....
I learned the lesson the hard way when reading Agatha Christie's And then there were none. I didn't read the epilogue, gave the book back to the library, and my mom told me that the whole plot was revealed in the epilogue and I had to read it. Now I always read prologues and epilogues
The other day, I asked my partner, “What are you doing?”
Simple question, right?
Except… he suddenly got defensive. His tone changed. I could feel tension building, and I had no idea why. So I took a breath and asked, “Wait, what did you hear me say?”
He paused, thought about it, and said, “I thought you meant ‘Why aren’t you doing anything?’ Like you were mad I was being lazy.”
But that wasn’t what I meant at all. I’d genuinely just been curious.
And that moment reminded me how easily things can go sideways when we assume intent. Our brains, especially when we’ve had messy pasts, trauma, or relationship anxiety, tend to fill in the blanks with the worst possible meaning.
But that one question, “What did you hear me say?”, turned what could’ve been an argument into understanding.
It gave both of us a chance to clarify before our brains made up a story that wasn’t true. I was able to explain, and he was able to listen. Understanding what I meant changed his tension entirely.
Sometimes the fight isn’t about what was said. It’s about what was heard.
“What did you hear me say?” can defuse a storm before it starts.

would you rather have in-unit laundry (washer/dryer) or an in-unit dishwasher?
in-unit laundry; i consider myself generally messy
in-unit laundry; i consider myself generally neat
in-unit laundry; i am neutral on the messy-neat scale
in-unit dishwasher; i consider myself generally messy
in-unit dishwasher; i consider myself generally neat

no other nuance bald vanilla option. put it in the tags if you must. this is for science.
Fellow writers, I have a question:
What is your process for deciding on titles for your works??
That's the hardest thing for me, always the task I leave for last. I generally try to find a good phrase from the work, and if not a phrase that will summarise the work. When I can't find inspiration, I look at song titles

Can you play an instrument? (Any skill level)
Yes (which one? 👀)
No
Nuance (up to interpretation)
I’m just curious how many people at some point in their lives have played/learned to play an instrument of any kind.
I included a nuance button bc I know there might be some folks who might be like “well I played the recorder in grade school but idk if that counts” — count it if you want or hit nuance if you’re unsure! 😊
To be clear, if you studied an instrument to any level of proficiency, even if you’re out of practice now, please select yes!
Reblog with your instrument, if you wish 🙏🏼 Or just for more accurate results
Boosting again! I’ve been enjoying reading everyone’s responses so far, it brings me joy to see music has reached so many lives!! 😊🫶🏼
TRUMPET GANG BABYYYYY
Do I play an instrument? let me count the ways....
Flute: my primary, even nowadays when I don't practice much I play at a high level of proficiency
Clarinet: I'm halfway decent as long as you don't make me play a B natural or C above the break. Other break notes are fine, those two are just little bitches.
Trumpet: My endurance sucks ass and I can't reliably hit a D but that's still good enough for middle school level playing
Trombone: It's been a HOT MINUTE but this used to be the brass instrument I was best at
Piano: I can still play all the scales, basic chords, and some songs are stuck in my memory, but for the love of god don't make me sight read anything
Guitar: I have a handful of chords under my belt, but I've never stuck with it long enough to develop calluses or learn how to fucking strum properly
Ukulele: Same as above, but since I just have a kids learner uke it's much easier to just pick up and play a little ditty without too much issue. Strumming patterns are still of the devil though.
Pitched Percussion: Can I play with four mallets at once, no, but can I learn a song, absolutely
Unpitched Percussion: Look please just don't make me A) improvise or B) play a drumset, I am not coordinated enough for either of those things, but I can learn just about any part fine, as long as you don't make me roll the snare.
Violin/Viola/Cello: It has been ten years since I even picked one up but I probably could figure out how to do it again if you gave me a beginner method book and ten minutes.
Bassoon: Why does it have nine thumb keys. What instrument even needs that many thumb keys. Double reeds hurt my mouth so much. What is wrong with double reed players. What mad science have you undergone. Don't even get me started on oboe.
HOW COULD I FORGET THE HUMBLE SAXOPHONE listen the thing is I can't accurately judge my own ability on saxophone because it turns out that for years the one I was trying to use for demonstrations had a leaky pad on the thumb key so I have no idea how much of the problem was my breath control and how much was that. I'm a flautist tho, flute to sax is an easy pipeline, so if I had a WORKING ONE and a week I could probably play you quite the ditty.
I miss them 😭
