That “new scientific breakthrough discovery” you just read about on that news site/blog/Facebook page? It’s almost certainly wrong. This article from Vox is a seriously important thing that, if you care about science, you really need to read, like right now.
My take: The tendency of the media to report on what is *NEW* in science is indicative of what I think is the largest perspective gap between scientists and nonscientists.
The general public (<- apologies, I hate how homogenous that word is, because there is no single “general public”, but I have to use it here) seems to crave novelty and has a tendency to view every scientific finding as forwardprogress and individually meaningful, but science is a an ongoing process of self-correction and repetition. It doesn’t have an “end” and any single study is almost certainly wrong, or at the very least doesn’t tell the full story.
This is why I have tried to steer clear of reporting on “breaking” science news in my own efforts here on OKTBS. Science communicators and journalists, we need to make a commitment to covering science as a process and not as a series of breakthroughs. When science IS reported that way, we run the risk of losing people’s trust when science later must later correct or contradict itself, which is something that will absolutely happen, because that’s what science does. We must also make people comfortable with the idea uncertainty and science-as-a-process is a good thing!
I’ll shut up now. Go read this.
I have a big problem with the original version of this picture, so I fixed it.
CALORIES ARE NOT BAD FOR YOU.
Promoting calories as “bad” is dangerous because it can influence people to practice disordered eating and thinking. And coming from personal experience…IT SUCKS.
Calories are not bad for you. Food is not bad for you. Having junk/high-calorie foods is OKAY (everything in moderation). It took me a long time to realize that.
Please know that food is okay. That eating is okay. Have that cookie after eating dinner if you want, I promise you that it’s okay.
Bringing Body Love Into Dance Class: A New Way of Teaching
by Amanda Trusty
We giggle a lot when we talk about our muscles and our imagery, but while we are at the barre and we are dancing, everyone is extremely focused on using their new muscle memory to their advantage. It’s amazing to me to see these girls self-correct themselves without me ever saying “suck it in” or “tuck under.”
All I have to say is, “where’s your tailfeather headed?” and the plié changes drastically. Say, “I can’t see what color your necklace is” to a student, and watch their posture change immediately.
My goal is to teach the girls all the amazing things their bodies can do, and I never bring attention to their weight or their body type. In fact, just this past week, we started a new exercise at the barre where I ask each girl what her favorite part of her body is. Most said legs, some said arms, and next week I’ll ask them for a different one. If we start encouraging these young ladies to love their bodies now, the Photoshopped magazines and the Hollywood red carpet will take a longer time to affect them.

I was a head taller than everyone else my age at 6, and had strong wide shoulders, although I had a rangy, athletic build. The ballet teacher told my mother that I was ‘just too big’, and that I could never have any success in dance. That’s the first time that I remember Being Too Big. I never was allowed to take another dance class, no matter how I begged. My mother’s attempt to protect me backfired, teaching me that A) I really was Too Big, and B) that people’s opinions were able to control me.
Seeing this brings happy tears to my eyes, and hope for the future.
This method is beautiful.
I loved ballet until our was 6 and my instructor said my legs were just too big.
That shit fucked me up for 20 years,

After a man was body shamed and ridiculed on 4chan for dancing at a concert, a group of women are organizing a dance party for him.
There’s that saying, “Dance like nobody is looking” but in this world everyone is. So dance like they’re looking, and give them something to be jealous about! Joy, Happiness, Self Love.

Single Leg Bridge Lift
3 sets of 15 reps
Anna Carrieri
Come to lying on the back. Grab 2 foam rollers, placing them in an upside down T-shape. Place the soles of the feet on the top of the T, and lie long ways over the other roller. On an inhale, begin to press into the feet, lifting the hips up and off the roller. Keep the arms down by the sides, with the palms facing down for balance and support. Keep lifting the hips until the torso and hips form a 45 degree angle to the floor. Press weight into the right foot and extend the left leg straight out in front of the body. Keeping the hip points lifting, sweep the leg up bringing it perpendicular to the floor. Lower the leg back to hover. That was one rep. Continue this move, going for 15 to 20 reps, then switch legs.
Good for strength, toning, and hip flexor stretch

There’s nothing like yet another snow-ice-free-for-all to remind you that even though it’s March it’s still very much winter up here in the Northeast but at least I have warming, hearty meals like this Curried Cauliflower Garden Bowl to keep me going!
Get this Garden Bowl recipe and my go-to classic hummus here!
Its so sad when people hate their laugh or their smile, because that means they hate how they look when they’re happy, and the fact that people are self-conscious about their own happiness is heartbreaking to me.
#bloomingopen Day 2 ! Upward Facing Plank
With my ladies fatgirlgetsfitatlast fromsmallvilletosuperman yogipeach How to: Start off sitting with your legs bent and feet flat on the floor. Press your hands on the ground (fingers forward) behind your hips. Lift your hips up and bring your torso parallel to the ground. (You’re now in ‘reverse table’) One by one extend your legs in front of you (feet flat). Pull your hips up and lift your chest higher. Relax your head back.

**A recommended modification is using a chair. Grab the back of the seat and straighten your legs in front of you and lift your hips off the seat. Go slow if your a beginner and remember to hold the position while breathing! :))
💜happy practicing!💜
