I did not expect that. I figured since they brought back Blockbuster, most of Nightwing 1996 was now defunct.

What else is still canon???

Is everything still canon but Blockbuster somehow managed to escape? Or like, the events still played as normal except replace Blockbuster with some other generic villain who did all the same things?

Was Dick still a police officer in this canon? Did he work in that cop bar? Has he already met Amy? Did Tarantula happen?

Like I’m sure they’re just never gonna acknowledge it at this point, but now that I see we’re willing to bend some logic for the sake of preserving former canon, I now choose to presume all of NW 1996 as canon until explicitly stated otherwise. Bite me.

Dick’s past as a cop was acknowledged in # 80 and Tarantula was seen in a memory overview in # 68. I'm never going to understand how Blockbuster is supposed to have survived though 🤷🏼‍♀️

Dick Grayson fic exchange reveals!

I had such a blast with this challenge, and it's been such a really lovely way to get to know the fandom a little better. I'm at heart quite a shy person, and being able to chat on the discord and get to know some of the people in fandom has been such a lovely experience. A big thank you to @withthekeyisking-writer for running the challenge, and to all the wonderful authors and reviewers who made this exchange so much fun!

I was lucky enough to receive The Last Look of Hope from @tiredaroaceperson, who very sweetly picked up on my utter fascination and love for everything set during the time Dick was placed in a juvenile facility and turned it up to 11. The quiet angst! the hurt! The glimpses of the Dick Grayson we would come to know and love (although this Dick is so lovable as well). The Dick and Bruce scene! I will never be able to get enough of fics like this :)

This is the challenge that broke through my 10 years of writer's block, where everything I've written up to this time has felt incredibly difficult and with that wonderful edge of self-loathing that comes with falling into a loooong slump where you can barely even look at your own writing, let alone start the next sentence. Just for breaking through that, I'm eternally grateful :). As a result, I wrote a fair bit - I think I posted seven or so fics, and there are probably another seven or so half-completed ones on my computer. There are couple that are actually finished, but which I'm not even sure if they actually classify as decent fic (or even fic!) at this point, and so I'm sitting on them until I come to a decision. I've also committed to posting one that's a work in progress, even though it's bonkers and really plays havoc with characterisation, but that's sometimes just the way of the fanfic writing world!

I can never stop thinking about The Neighborhood (Nightwing (1996) #10). It lives rent-free in my mind. Like, here's a list of things that appear/happen in Dick's nightmare:

He's married to Donna

They have two kids

Donna is cheating on him with Roy

Dick works an office job

Dick's boss is the Joker

Bruce works at the same company as him but much higher up

Bruce & Selina are married

They also live next door to Dick & Donna

Poison Ivy and the Penguin are married and also live nearby

Jason is a skeleton and the paperboy and he goes by JT

Jean-Paul Valley takes Bruce's place above Dick when Bruce gets promoted

Tim also works there and gets mad at Dick for screwing up the budget

Bruce throws Dick's son out a window & the kid falls to his death

Like... Dick, buddy, there's a lot to unpack there. have you considered talking to someone about any of that. I think you probably should but I know you're not going to.

Good point! He still doesn’t address any of what happens in the nightmare, but you’ll notice that in Secret Files, halluciJason is mostly shrouded in shadow, particularly his face! I wonder if that perchance has something to do with the fact that Neighborhood halluciJason's face wasn't shown until the end, and when it was, it was just a skeleton. Just a skull with gleaming eyes. And Secret Files halluciJason is shrouded in shadow but maintains those gleaming eyes. Coincidence? I think not.

If I’m reading you right - you mean the shrouded in shadow Secret Files Jason could be symbolic of Dick being so horrified by the sight of the skeleton Jason (+ the confirmation of Jason’s irreversible death which it represents) that he plunges them both back into a dream-like state of ignorance? B/c I totally agree!

my discourse-generating opinion of the night: Dick Grayson was a fantastic Batman and principally hated wearing the cowl because he did not want to be Batman in a world where that meant his dad was dead, not because he was or is opposed to the concept of being Batman entirely. In a world where Bruce is still alive, he WOULD be fine with being Batman and canonically WAS fine with it

Justice League 'We Are Yesterday' theory.

Firstly, I have NO idea what is going on in this arc. There are so many loose ends, and I think there are 4-5 Dicks running around at the moment in some shape or form (because the 'current' Nightwing who ended up stuck with Beastboy at the end of the world isn't the one who got blown-up with Bruce and Clark in their time traveling bubble, right? That wouldn't make sense! I need that story thread to be resolved, damn you!).

However. My theory is not about any of that, but the two Robins who are currently stuck in the present/main universe (?), in particular the smaller Robin.

Because I LOVE all the younger versions of Dick, I must admit I was initially very excited by this - especially when there was such a cute little scene between tiny!Robin and Clark!

Except. I don't think the smaller version is Dick. I think it's Jason. His hair is shaded in every scene in a way that coincidentally mimics the white patch he has as an adult. He faces off exclusively with the Joker. Oh, and on the first occasion where they do face off?

There's a crowbar dramatically positioned on screen. Prior to this, Joker has only been using a gun.

Yeah. That's Robin!Jason.

Normally, I'd be really pleased to have more Robin!Jason, but now I'm just sad it's at the expense of more tiny!Dick.

(But, also, seriously, what the hell is going on with Dick in this arc? How in the world is any of this tying into Batman/Superman: World's Finest - where Dick is conspicuously absent this month and the crossover doesn't even seem to have even happened - let alone still be ongoing? And how is this all going to tie in potentially to the 'Robin problem' that the Hush team are threatening to solve?)

okay sooo story time...

I'm not sure if I should add trigger warnings to this, but it does include mentions of child captivity/neglect and violence.

Dick and his family were hunted by Mer-hunters: humans who target Merfolk. These hunters often slaughter the adults and use their scales, fins, and other parts for various purposes. They capture the young children, raise them in captivity, and train them into obedience before selling them off for performances and entertainment.

After killing Dick’s parents, they kept him bound aboard their ship until they could dock at the next island, where he would be sold. But before they reached land, a massive storm struck. The ship sank in the chaos, leaving Dick trapped in the wreckage.

Bruce, always vigilant for signs of human interference near his territory, especially after storms, was scouting the area when he came across the wreck. Among the shattered wood and debris, he found Dick.

Jason was an outcast, alone and barely surviving. With no pod or family, he scavenged near human settlements, stealing out of desperation in a sea that offered nothing to those without a home.

Bruce first met Jason when he tried to steal his fin bracelet. It was gold, and Jason thought he could sell it. But before Bruce could confront him, the boy vanished into the open sea.

Bruce spotted him again while scouting near a human island. He often patrolled the borders of their territory making sure humans didn’t come too close. That’s when he saw Jason again, hidden beneath a boat dock, eating scraps and leftovers thrown out by humans. Bruce tried to approach, but Jason thought he was there to steal his food and hid again.

So, Bruce started hunting more food. Alfred prepared it, and Dick was the one to leave it near Jason, figuring a kid might scare him less than an adult would. Eventually, Jason stopped hiding from them.
