I don’t think love is that giddy feeling you get when you’re with a being you care about. No, after all, we are just all animals blessed with a consciousness and that’s just the animal side telling us to get it on. A crush is simply recognizing a being that you want to mate with. Even if it won’t lead to a child, whether from being the same sex or from complications or even the choice not to have kids. There’s nothing wrong with the call of wanting to mate. Like I’ve said, we are just simply animals after all. This is where our conscience comes in. We are able to make decisions beyond just propagating the species and surviving. I think for us cognizant creatures, love has more meaning. Of course, I’m not trying to be egotistical in the sense that, “we are the top of the food chain and so we are special”. I mean we are awake and aware of more things than just outrunning predators (not that that’s easy, certainly not). Now to my point; Love is trust, understanding, and compassion. I personally don’t think that to love means to sacrifice. I think that that is a view adopted after watching one too many romantic movies or series. I, of course, know that love of any kind may involve sacrifice, but I feel that there’s more to it. Love comes in many forms from family to friends and partners. Trust is believing them and the things they say, not being uneasy or wary around them and generally feeling safe around them. You’ll feel like they are reliable and are not hiding things from you. Understanding is generally just being on their wavelength and comprehending why, when, where and how they do things and just “getting” them and them “getting” you. Compassion; this is the one I understood last because only the other two came up when I was thinking. I did some research on what love was and I concluded on was that this too is a part of love. This part involves, “showing love”; hugging them, holding them, kissing them, being there for them and the such. All these together I feel make up true love. The definitions I see online seem to want to define the emotion. I want to define the logic behind love. I know this could be seen as the definition of propinquity or closeness, but these are all things that develop over time that lead to the basis of love. Love is simply propinquity. Love does not necessarily have to mean adoration. First, you get to know another, then you like them over time and then love after a long time.
Edit: Since the time of writing this, I have realized that respect should be involved in this definition. Even though it may be implied with compassion and understanding, the actual act of deciding to accept what you have understood and choosing to show compassion is respect. Hopefully, this posts stops at least one person from getting into a bad relationship.
