Model Monday: Al Ahmadi Cultural Center
Envisioned as a destination for art, music, theater, and dance in Kuwait, the Al Ahmadi Cultural Center celebrates the country’s rich cultural heritage. Located south of Kuwait City in Mahboula, the Center will contain multiple performance spaces and galleries. SOM designed the sustainable building as a light box, tuned to the bright desert climate: the building enclosure filters natural light to levels appropriate for display of art and historic artifacts. This 3D-printed model allowed the design team to study the effects of light and shadow on the facade, and to refine the curved forms of the building’s roof and entry. Learn more

This 3D-printed and CNC-milled model focuses on one segment of the roof structure of Terminal 2 at Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport in Mumbai. Supported by thirty mega-columns, the vast ceiling structure is intricately detailed, with an articulated coffered treatment that allows daylight to filter into the terminal. The design is inspired by traditional Indian motifs, evoking the history, culture, and vitality of India’s most populous city. Completed in 2014, the terminal now serves as a bustling gateway to India, designed to accommodate 40 million passengers each year. #Architecture #Design #Mumbai #CSIA #Airport #3DPrinting #ArchModelMonday 📷: @skidmoreowingsmerrill
