harry potter in 2025? really fascinating how so many people are super into fanon hp stuff (basically entirely divorced from the source) but can't actually leave the fandom behind. instead of moving to literally anything else you are ultimate still tied to a series by an author actively helping destroy trans rights. genuinely incomprehensible. this isn't even a hate anon I'm just really confused.

I can definitely understand why being a queer/liberal person in the hp fandom can be hypocritical, and there are some people who do still support jkr behind closed doors. For me, the hp and marauders fandom have become an incredibly safe space rich with representation as a clear "fuck you" to jkr and her supporters. She HATES this fandom, and that alone makes me feel a little better about being part of it. From a fiscal perspective, I refuse to support her in any way - I don't buy merch, I don't watch the movies, anything that could make it's way back to her I staunchly avoid.

I know some people have problems with the fact that the series, and by association jkr, is staying relevant largely because of the fandom. I try my absolute hardest not to bring in new fans by staying quiet about the series and not wearing merch or posting about it to avoid spiking someone's curiousity. If I do talk about the series, its only with people who are already in the fandom space, and I lead with the disclaimer that I do not support jkr in any way. If I find out someone I know is wanting to get into the fandom, I give them a rundown of jkrs policies and how to navigate being in the fandom while not actually supporting her, including loaning my copies of the books (most of which I got secondhand or as gifts in elementary school, when I was too young to be politically aware).

If being part of the fandom makes you uncomfortable, then you don't have to participate, and if you see someone supporting jkr, please hold them accountable (kindly! some people really don't know better). I'll always have a small level of discomfort, and I have distanced myself from the fandom more in years past, but I feel as though so long as fans consume the media responsibly and put in effort to support marginalized communities, it's okay to enjoy something that makes you happy
