Malfoy Townhouse | Lucissa
Friday May 6, 2016 Lucius’ Townhouse 11.00pm @purebloodperfection
Lucius did not do a great deal of entertaining in his own home. It was his space, and he did not relish the idea of sharing it with anyone else. But he had spent almost 80 hours in his office during the previous week, and the idea of spending even more time there in preparation for the firm’s mock trial competition was not something that held much appeal. And so he had suggested to Narcissa that instead of very average Chinese takeout and unflattering fluorescent lights, that they might be more comfortable in his home.
Lucius was seated on the floor with a macbook on his lap. Tieless, shoeless, and wearing a rugby jumper for England, it was the most casual he ever looked, anywhere. Papers and various leather-bound law journals were scattered over the floor as he ran a hand through his hair, only adding to his dishevelled look.
“I never usually say this. But things look particularly bad for our client.”
Narcissa sat on the floor of Lucius’ townhouse, hair taken up carelessly in a clip and her shoes kicked out somewhere. On the one side was her laptop and on the other side were documents laying in piles with sticky notes sticking out of the pile at all edges. Until half an hour ago, Narcissa was actively partaking in their planning for the mock case but a note in her handbag managed to occupy her mind.
It was only when Lucius spoke that she realized she was still reading the same sentence of thirty minutes ago. She shook her, “I’m sorry, my mind isn’t here.” Putting down the file in her hand, she stretched out and took a sip of her water. It was something she had learned years ago and usually managed to help her reorganize her thoughts.
“Let’s try this again, his sister is testifying against him. Right?”
He watched her looking at the letter. He was almost certain that she was going to open it - part of him wanted to see her read it, and gauge her reaction to the generous salary. But she put it away, and so he resigned himself to having to wait and hear through the office gossip whether she was going to join them.
“Well, I was not really involved in the selection process, so I suppose you will have to ask the partners themselves. But I daresay it has more than a bit to do with your record in court so far. You have come a long way for someone so new to the profession, and they recognise potential, and reward ambition and drive. You seem an obvious choice to me.”
“Me?” Now it was Lucius’ turn to furrow his brow in confusion at her words. “Why should my opinion mean anything to you?”
“My cases are quite successful when you aren’t the one opposing me.” Who knows? If things went well then they might be partners instead of rivals, and very soon. Maybe it will do to start being nice to the man. “Thank you, Lucius.” While he made it clear that he wasn’t part of the selection, he was still there, and he made the announcement special. He could have slipped the letter under her office door and not have anything to do with her.
“I am your rival. You have no need to compliment me unless you really, truly mean it.” A playful glint entered her eyes, “Besides, it always means more when you are complimented by somebody whose attractiveness matches your own.”
“No-” he says, and doesn’t have the time to be surprised at himself for how quickly he speaks. Nor time to wonder at the faint desperation that has crawled into his voice, pathetic and low. It feels like so long since he’s seen Narcissa, so many years, so many things that are different. It feels like no time has passed at all. “No, I’ll come. I would like to come.”
It’s impossible, in that moment, how much he wants to reassure his cousin of that, and without thinking he’s reached his hands across the table, has taken her hands into his own, needing to give her something, a sign, anything- something to tell her what he’s trying to say without needing words for it. It’s not even about the invitation, now, it’s about something else, something more- even if he doesn’t know what.
He shakes his head minutely, “I’m sorry, I just…” he licks his lips, and he doesn’t know how to explain it, the hesitation, the stutter of apprehension that had overcome him. He smiles instead, a little pained, “Yeah… I’d. I’d be honoured to go.”
She wanted to ask if he was sure but doesn’t for the fear that he would change his mind. “Good,” instead she smiled and squeezed the hand holding hers, “I will add your name to the guest list then.” It occured to her to ask him then if he wanted to walk her down the aisle, but she decided to wait a bit. They have to get to know each other all over again.
There were so many things Narcissa wanted to say, wanted to ask. But where to start? “I was recruited by one of the top law companies in Britain. I start working there in a month.” Maybe that would interest him. After all, he had been the one who pushed her to go study in the first place.
He laughed and shook his head, because he hadn’t been expecting such a barbed remark. He wondered, briefly, whether Al liked him enough to dissuade Narcissa from putting a hit out on him, but he could not be sure. He might have been useful to the man, but something told him that might not be enough if Narcissa was truly mad. “No. It is not a joke. I have a letter right here.” He reached into the internal pocket of his suit jacket and produced an envelope which he held out to her. “They will want to meet with you of course, to discuss your terms. You should consider the salary there as only a starting point for your negotiations.”
“Almost cerulean, in fact. Perhaps he had not seen a great many rain forests.” He smiled at the anecdote, as much as he smiled at her blush. “But you already have the offer that I was asked to give you, and so I can assure you that I have no ulterior motives when I say you are one of the most beautiful women that I have had the good fortune of meeting.”
Narcissa took the letter from him and looked it over. For a moment her curiosity almost won out but in the end she placed the letter in her handbag. She didn’t want to look too eager in front of Malfoy. “Thank you. I will read through it tonight.” She fiddled with her engagement ring, as she usually did when she was nervous, “Not to sound too much like a distressed fairy tale character, but why me?” Her studies were barely finished and she was still trying to find her feet in the industry.
Narcissa’s eyebrows lifted, not used to men knowing colours that well and almost impressed. Though, on second thought, she should have expected it from him. She was left speechless, unsure of how to take the compliment and the sincerity in his tone. A small smile lingered at the side of her lips, “Thank you,” she said softly, “that means a lot coming from you.”
“Well there is not such a position - yet. You may not be aware Narcissa, but my firm do rather a lot of pro bono. We each have a quota of hours for the year that we must devote to it, in fact. The partners have realised just how rewarding the work can be, and how refreshing for their lawyers, and are seeking to expand in that area. But they cannot until they find someone suitably qualified - and more importantly, motivated - to manage the project. They have asked me to gauge your interest in the role.”
“Are you fishing for compliments, Miss Black?” He tilted his head to the side, smiling mischievously. “I would have thought a woman so intelligent, and beautiful, would not find herself in a dearth of compliments very often.”
Al she could do was blink. And blink again. Her? They wanted to recruit her? Never in a million years would she have thought a firm would want her specifically to fill a position. “I swear, Malfoy, if this is some sick joke I will personally ask our mutuals to dispose of you.” This was the opportunity she had been waiting for. Years of planning and studying and if Lucius Malfoy was playing around with her then he deserved every bit of torture Amycus and Al could think up for him.
This time she really did roll her eyes, though she was mortified to find herself blushing a bit at his compliments. “Considering that I hold the future of many people in my hands, I cannot really take the compliments to heart. Just the other day somebody compared my eyes to the rain forest... And I am pretty sure my eyes are blue, not green.”
“Well then, I suppose I shall see what I can do to make it a reality.”
“Not entirely impossible, I shouldn’t think. You could move to a firm with a decent pro bono division, and do work for those most in need, or charities and not-for-profits. Then you would be doing work to directly contribute to the betterment of society.” The firm at which he worked naturally did the largest amount of pro bono work of any legal firm in London. And that was partly his reason for bringing Narcissa to lunch - they wanted to recruit her.
He arched a brow at her, smirking slightly as the idea of being one of the most eligible bachelors. But he was surprised to hear that she thought he could not stand her. She might have frustrated him in a professional sense, but she was undeniably beautiful, and there was just something about her that intrigued him. “I never said I could not stand you. In fact, quite the opposite is true. You intrigue me.”
The smile Narcissa gave him was almost pitying, though she wasn’t sure whether she pitied him or the fact that his ideal would never work – for it was a very good way of seeing this. “That is very idealistic and, I will admit, that it was my main goal when I came to study law. Unfortunately you and I both know that pro bono work is not the most stable. If a firm is in trouble, that is the first department to go. Besides, I doubt there is even a firm out there that does enough work to appoint an attorney for solely pro bono cases.”
The urge to roll her eyes at his smirk was overwhelming. Of course the man would take pride in that status. But what he said next made her laugh with shock. “Me? Intriguing? What on earth could intrigue you about me? I am less interesting than this candle.” She hoped he would believe that. The last thing Narcissa needed was for her main opposition to go around scratching in her past.
Working at the bar was relatively mundane labor for Bellatrix, all things considered, but every once in a while she felt obliged to pitch in and lend a hand – if only to stop Gruffyd’s more inspired staff choices from burning the place down. Paperwork of any kind had never been their forte, and the thought alone of trusting the likes of insurance claims and property bills to a flighty gaggle of twenty somethings with more ink on their bodies than sense, made her skin crawl. Rain or shine, through drug busts and drug booms, risking their cover business remained the most monumental fuck up any of them could ever manage. At the end of the day, The Shade was all that stood between them and those uppity bastards over at the HMRC – and they didn’t tend to react well to shivs at their throats.
She was halfway through filing the employee’s emergency contact cards (possibly the only sensible formality they’ve ever decided to follow through with), scribbling down Gideon’s name on hers, when a deafening crash jolted her out of her routine.
Bellatrix quickly spotted the source of the problem – a woman who looked like she had no business being here – and with a loud scoff set the paperwork down, grabbing a washcloth and leaving her place behind the bar to come up behind their most recent hire, eyes narrowed.
“S – S– Sorry –”
“Shut the fuck up, Steve,” Bellatrix growled, shoving the rag into his hands and motioning at the spilled beer and shattered glass, “Clean this mess up, would you? And be glad this is going to Barbie’s bill over here and not coming out of your paycheck.” Steely eyes flickered back over to the blonde, deciding she could more than afford to get footed with the bill for this. “Well? Are you gonna get up off there anytime soon? I can’t promise you that floor’s been cleaned recently.”
Slowly Narcissa opened her eyes. A quick over look told her that she only had one minor cut on her hand but her dress was ruined – not that she really cared about that. Her hand carefully moved some of the glass pieces around her so she wouldn’t hurt herself when she got up. All this time her head was turned down. She would not look Bellatrix in the eye while she was on a floor. She still had her pride.
Once she stood, she looked at her sister and the shock was clear on her face. She hadn’t changed at all. Her face was more mature, more hardened, but she still looked like the 15 year old who ran away. Her voice was unrecognizable though, the way she spoke very much the same but it pained Narcissa to notice how much like their parents she sounded. The only thing that had given her hope was that her sister ran away to find a better life for herself.
But what hurt the most was the way she spoke to Narcissa. Barbie? Really? It wasn’t like she had a choice over the colour of her hair; so different from her family’s. The dullness in her eyes told Narcissa that she had no idea who she was. More than ten years since they saw each other and not a day went by where the youngest didn’t think – worry – about her sister. But perhaps that was a sentimentality only Narcissa was cursed with.
“You don’t know who I am?” It was a statement more than a question.
Her voice was meeker than she had planned but, then again, nothing was going according to plan tonight. She kept her back straight at least, refusing to be the weaker one.
“I reserve it for people who I seem to recall left their families and this life.” Evan replied coolly. He didn’t really bear any resentment towards Narcissa, knowing that she had done what she needed to do. But to someone who was so fiercely loyal, it still stung that she hadn’t just given up on the Black family, but on him by extension. “Who are you looking for?”
“I didn’t...” Narcissa trailed off with a sigh. She didn’t leave the family, she only refused to go into the business which, to her father, was good enough to practically disown her. But telling that to Evan was a waste of breath. Who knows what information her parents had fed him? His question made her hesitate a moment. If he disliked her then he sure as hell wouldn’t like what she had to say next, “I want to find Bellatrix.”
