I’ve been in a bit of a funk related to this subject of human connection in fandom spaces lately (apologies to my sweet fandom friends who have listened and sympathized with some moody DMs from me in the past week or two).

Being an active community participant / builder and fic reader / commenter in a small fandom where everyone who’s here sort of knows each other — which to be clear, is overwhelmingly wonderful! — does, nonetheless, hit a little different when you’re ALSO 1. a small creator with fics that don’t show up in the main AO3 tag everyone’s here for, and 2. relatedly, a voracious fic reader obsessed with a character who rarely shows up as a main/PoV character in fic — so when it happens, it makes your entire year (but most of the time, it doesn’t happen, and you end up talking to yourself about your own stale fic and head-canons to get your character fix).

There is nothing that *needs* changing or correcting, because at the end of day, everyone has limited time and is here for the reasons they are here! I love reading and supporting others’ large and small fanworks, and I’m always going to strive to do that. Having said that, I am trying to be more intentional and open with people — when it comes up in conversation — about what forms of connection would make me feel a little more at home in the fandom, too. Because I’ve realized that a lot of people might not be aware. For me, it’s things like: if you mention to me that you love Aleida or resonate with my take on her, I’d love if you actually dropped by one of my fics sometime; and if you do find it interesting (totally fine if you don’t!), let me know so we can talk about it! And likewise, if you’re working on an Aleida-focused fic or just thinking interpretively about her as a character, I would find it so fun and fulfilling to chat back and forth about that too. Just thought I’d share in case this resonated with anyone ❤️

To which I will add- the costs of violence and destruction usually fall heaviest on the poor and marginalized, not the rich and powerful.

The rich can relocate when the bullets start flying. The rich can rebuild if their house gets bombed. The rich can get top-notch health care if they're injured in an attack. The rich can buy their way out of being conscripted to fight. The rich will be the first to get aid if food or power or water or medicine runs short.

The poor can't, and won't.

A revolution must eat a lot of poor people for every rich person it consumes.

This does not mean "just accept the status quo." But it does mean that you need to think real hard about whether the actions you support are actually helping to create a more equitable society, or are just about you venting your anger and frustration and feeling like you're Doing Something.

Also, peaceful and just societies don't tend to rise from horrific violence and brutality. "Burn it all down and Utopia will rise from the ashes" is just the wishful thinking of an apocalypse cult, and should have no place in serious discourse.

According to my notes, this is the 330th time we've played the word game! It started on discord + the bird site in 2020 & later moved to bluesky + here. Your dialogue is stiff because everyone is being too honest

Great dialogue can come from radical emotional honesty. But in most real conversations, people

dodge questions

answer indirectly

lie (badly)

change the subject

crack jokes to avoid serious answers

lie (convincingly)

say half of what they mean

tell the truth but get so anxious/angry/defensive others now think they're lying

If your dialogue feels unnatural, it might be because everyone is saying exactly what they think, or articulating their thoughts too well. Try letting characters hide things instead.

Subtext is where tension lives.
