Eroticism is, first of all, the most moving of realities; but it is nonetheless, at the same time, the most ignoble. Even after psychoanalysis, the contradictory aspects of eroticism appear in some way innumerable; their profundity is religious—it is horrible, it is tragic, it is still inadmissible. Probably all the more so since it is divine.
— Georges Bataille, The Tears of Eros
The original way that Mouchette chooses to die in the film—the repeated suicide attempt that does not work until the third try—that is for me perfect because of its profundity, the impossibility of interpretation and its singularity. That which is shown in the film cannot be recounted.
The first episode for me is an example of parts of his films that are symbolic and thus not very meaningful; the second is an example of those parts that are non-symbolic, political, and profound.

Life / synopsis, 1999 - by Gilbert Garcin
“Natural mysticism is mysticism in its earliest form as it was known by ancient societies including the Egyptians, Greeks, Hindus, and Celts. The essence of mystical or ecstatic experience is that of being one with the universe so that you are all and all is you. Apparent union with the natural world is most often experienced when one is alone in nature because the perception of earth, heaven, and ocean symbolically abound with a sense of the unity of all things.”
