"Can’t help it," James laughs, shrugging slightly. "Mum and Dad couldn’t make a gentleman out of me no matter how hard they try." It’s mostly true, anyway. And it’s not from any lack of trying on their part. It’s not about being a proper wizard, not like it seems to be in Sirius’s family; no, the Potters just concentrate on being the most proper upper class people imaginable. Maybe James should take some of the lessons to heart; after all, it might be the only way he’ll ever get Lily Evans to look twice at him.
Sirius is waiting for an answer though, so he grins widely and moves to take off his sweater. “I reckon I could make a bigger splash than you,” he taunts, glancing toward the water. “Ol’ Squidy might want a dancing partner. Maybe you’d like to oblige?” There’s a sudden image in his head of a large black dog, squid legs and arms (are there a difference?) wrapped around it, dipped low in a tango. He relaxes back into a prone position as fast as he sat up and shakes his head. “Lily Evans thinks I should take a long walk off a short pier.”
"D'you know, Prongs, we might have something in common, you and I," Sirius replies, his grin still intact. He knows James's parents are much more concerned with being respectable and the like, unlike his own dear family, so it's really not that much that they have in common. James might have a hope of becoming a halfways decent adult, but Sirius is fairly certain he'll be wallowing in teenage rebellion well into his middle life at least.
"Don't have the coordination for it, me," he says, doing his level best to sound mournful about it. He's hopeless at dancing, despite his parents' best attempts to pair him off with every decent pureblooded cousin he's got in past, and besides Sirius really doesn't fancy taking on the Squid -- or the merpeople, or any number of other things living in that lake. At least not 'til spring. "Well, you could impress her with your diving abilities, maybe? Who knows, maybe she's got a thing for Muggle athletics and you've been playing Quidditch all these years."
