My dad was an abusive, alcoholic, drug addict my whole life. God has a funny sense of humor because I was born with this affinity for him. I was thee definition of a daddy’s girl.

As a little girl I didn’t quite understand why my daddy would be taken out of our home in handcuffs or why he said mean things to my mommy, but I loved him with all of my heart. I knew that much. I didn’t understand why he left home for months at a time. I didn’t know why everyone was mad at him. I just loved my dad.

The events above became commonplace in my household. I spent 15 years dealing with what I didn’t even know was abuse until that one night… Let’s fast forward to the month of my 16th birthday. Now we’d had arguments and fights before but I was exhausted. I was tired of the paralyzingly fear of “what is he going to do next?” I was tired of him destroying our home and disrespecting my mother so I stood between them. At that moment, at 15, I was responsible for protecting my mother from the man I thought loved us. My assertion sent him through the roof and the last words he said before I left was “IMMA BEAT YO ASS”.

15. Homeless. And heartbroken by my dad.

That was 2009. I haven’t been the same since.
